Yamaha Niken GT - Are 3 wheels better than 2?

  • The Yamaha Niken is a radically new way to travel. This review covers how that front end really feels, how easy the GT is to maneuver, whether the engine has enough grunt at GT weight and some pretty shots of the beach ;)

    I really like this bike. It gets a lot of hate for not being a true 2 wheeler, but I don't care about semantics. It's just so different its cool. Hopefully, I can grab one before they become collector's items like the Honda Rune.

      Totally agree! It rides (mostly) like a 2 wheeler and you’re extremely likely to not lose the front! Good luck the investment 😎

    At 78 yrs of age i ride the Yamaha Tricity 155 . Its a great all rounder and can easily achieve 100 kph on the on the motorway(national speed limit is (100) i weigh 90kgs) its quite nippy !
    Why not test one and see what you think. I could definately light tour on it. Enjoyed your test. Thanks

    I actually love the look of the Niken. I do feel it is maybe a bit to niche/unique to become a big seller.
    Will have to try and get a demo from Fowlers some day. See if i can be converted. Great video BTW.

      Glad you agree - definitely give it a go because it attracted so much attention. It is a niche but I really enjoyed that about it. Something different and you’d be hard pushed to fall off it. Perfect for damp winter riding! 🤩

    I eventually got a niken gt and its a revelation imho .I personally prefer the LCD to the tfts as not so distracting .Yes it took a few times to remember the rear wheel is in the middle lol .The front end is stonking and during the bad weather we've had it certainly gives some extra security .It's comfy ,it has a great load capacity if needed .It's roomy especially with a pillion . Who needs massive lean angles ? It's got 45 ,I just hang off for the other 22 when necessary lol.your reviews are great and on point while being honest ,I look forward to many more in the future .

    The side bags come standard on the GT, but they are horrible things with a zip. I think the Niken is a stunner, especially from the front end. It's narrower than a Super Tenere.
    I have come to a point in my life that I am sick of looking at the road surface for diesel, wet leaves and, especially in Thailand, manhole covers [they're everywhere] and sand [also everywhere]. I ride a KTM 390 Duke and a Yamaha Aerox 155 over here, but if I could find one of these, I'd buy one. I believe only ten were imported. It's a shame they weren't built with the same type of techology that the Piaggio MP3 scooter has, enabling it to stand up on its own. If Yamaha had done this, I believe the bike would have been more popular. As things have turned out, Yamaha are discontinuing it.
    I have just got back from three months in southwest Portugal, where I have a Can-Am F3-S, a three-wheeler that doesn't lean, although the rider has to, and I got used to not having to look at the road surface.
    This is my second time viewing this video. It's a good one. Can I ask you what the riding pants are you are wearing, please?

    Enjoyed your video, you being an experienced biker, with two wheels is there a slight hesitation for the machine to want to turn in as opposed to one pivot point, Yamaha gts 1000 had this yet you learn how to ride around it, if you’ve not ridden one, do so.

  • @exothermal.sprocket
    @exothermal.sprocket 4 роки тому +1

    I'm attracted to it because it's strange, not because I like it. hahaha
    The Piaggio MP3 scooter system locks the front at lower speed so it in effect handles like a rigid 3 point trike, until moving and it frees up to handle like a leaning motorcycle again. If Yamaha built in some kind of speed sensitive electric lockup for the linkage, it would be more versatile for people looking for that low speed stability. Otherwise I cannot help but think it would be more of a handful when it start tipping over, than a standard 2 wheel bike.

    • @Laramoto
      @Laramoto  4 роки тому

      Good observations, the Piaggio system could work but would be an expensive mod. Its a lump of a bike that does need some pushing around, I think it needs a confident owner even if it did have slow speed assistance. Probably quite top heavy too compared to the Piaggio....

    • @exothermal.sprocket

      @@Laramoto Logo que surgiu a Piaggio MP3 eu achei interessante. Depois veio a Peugeot Metropolis, muito bonita e as scooters da Quadro. Depois veio a Yamaha Tricity e aí só faltava uma motocicleta de 3 rodas. A Yamaha Niken é sensacional, o som de seu motor é magnífico. Agora só está faltando uma motocicleta estradeira com 3 rodas (como uma Gold Wing).
      Acho que essa é a evolução da motocicleta, privilegiar a segurança sem tirar o prazer de pilotar.
      Sou motociclista e na maioria das vezes que eu caí, a roda da frente escorregou ...Imagine uma STAR VENTURE com 3 rodas, seria sensacional. Melhor, na minha modesta opinião, somente uma motocicleta com quatro rodas (qooder, da Quadro).
      As soon as Piaggio MP3 came up I found it interesting. Then came the beautiful Peugeot Metropolis and the Quadro scooters. Then came the Yamaha Tricity and there was only one 3-wheel motorcycle missing. The Yamaha Niken is sensational, the sound of its engine is magnificent. Now all that is missing is a three-wheeled motorcycle (like a Gold Wing).
      I think this is the evolution of the motorcycle, privileging safety without taking the pleasure of riding.
      I'm a biker and most of the time I fell, the front wheel slipped ... Imagine a 3 wheel STAR VENTURE would be awesome. Better, in my humble opinion, only a four-wheeled motorcycle (qooder, from Quadro).

      Depends. Are you trying to capture images of the roadway, or of the motorcycle like she is doing here. The chest cam captures the complete dash up to the grips. Much more informative for a bike review than looking at what the scenery is.
