  • A quick video for those of you who may be considering making glazes for your pottery, but don't know where to start. A good book can do a topic like this justice far better than someone like myself. I am not an expert. That said, here are a few of my everyday glaze recipes from John Britt's book on Mid-Range Glazes.
One of the takeaways should be that you need to work off of a local supplier's material list when starting out. If you plan on making glazes in any volume for any length of time, you will quickly be buying large sacks of material. It is not economic to ship these quantities, and so you will eventually have to get a local supplier for larger volume materials. It would be a shame to make lots of tests based on small quantities of mail ordered materials only to find you will have to substitute something when you go to buy the materials locally, requiring new testing.
The pieces shown were fired in an electric kiln (oxidation) to cone 5.
I checked with John Britt before making this video to ensure it was OK to share them out. I have no affiliation with the book, but I can't recommend it highly enough if you are just starting out.
