They nearly closed this line as unprofitable but a local boy made a campaign to save it. He gathered a lot of support across the country and it was saved. For now at least.
This railway line is a lifeline for dozens of villiages and every time they consider closing it most of the mountains start to protest, so they can't close it without angering these villages. What they can do is reconstruct it to allow for faster travel in the valeys (where a straight section is possible). Also, in recent years thanks to videos like yours the line has proven its tourist potential, so - you making this video helped saving the line.
That is so interesting and makes a lot of sense considering all the stops and the little villages we saw along the journey. We are so stoked that our video could potentially help to keep this lie going 😄 Thank you for watching!
Great video guys. Yep definitely a trip I would do if visiting Bulgaria, but in the summer. Wow so cheap, they need to promote it more and maybe attract more tourists to keep the line going.
This train definitely used but when the weather is better. This is the only remaining narrow gauge train in Bulgaria. There used to be more lines but they were dismantled. It is not a steam train. It climbs pretty high in the mountains, up to 1300 m, so this is why it cannot be very fast. This type of gauge is called Bosnian gauge and was first introduced by the Austrians for the mountainous terrain of Bosnia
Yes, traveling by train has its own charme. It is the ultimate way to discover the most beautiful places and it is also a very sustainable way of traveling.
We couldn't agree more! Traveling by train is one of our favorite ways to get around 😁🚃 while traveling through the Balkans we have missed using trains because there are not many trains running at all. Buses are the main public transport 🚍
Hi guys! To your note with two signs above the windows in the train. They are not allowing to stand looking out of the window and throw bottles out od the window obviously 😁 It's same here in Czech republic and I guess in post-communist countries in general. When sth is in a red circle on a white background it means it's forbidden to do that. So its not allowed :))) Thanks for another great video btw!
To be honest guys living in BG for 20+ years, we are kind of more used to these charming trains. I'm pretty sure most of us don't like them due to some bad reputation and the long time it takes to travel short distances. Something recent we've had is the Air Connection from Sofia to Varna which costs like 30EUR and is usually a 8-10 hour long train road. That becomes around 30-90 minutes with a flight. I feel like this is one of the coolest things we have as Sofia and Varna are distant, however we all in our country absolutely love our beaches. Hint: If you plan to go on a summer trip look around for some of those more secretive ones. They're pretty awesome if you have a group of friends with you. Hope you both enjoy it
Wow, that Air Connection sounds fantastic! We can totally understand why you would rather use faster transport. For us this train was a unique experience that we really enjoyed but I doubt we would want to use it as a regular form of transport. We visited Varna and really loved it! 😄
I think it is a lovely route. There is something nice about going slowly. I bet this would be amazing in the spring or summer as well. I would totally take the slow train. Great video!
I have to agree! It was such a relaxing trip just slowly chugging along through the snowy mountains and valleys 😍🇧🇬🚞 Thanks so much Marcia! Would you like to visit Bulgaria? 😊
.i'm from vietnam, i'm very happy to make friends, thank you for the experience of your country, very beautiful and wonderful, thank you, wish you success
It was a beautiful train ride and certainly an interesting experience! 😍🇧🇬🏞️ Our only complaint was the dirty windows which made seeing the views a little challenging 😅
@@SarahandMarek Winter time is pretty much the winter resorts and get expensive. I think you'll love it in the summer - the Belogradchik fortress and pillars, the Tsarevets fortsess in Veliko Tarnovo, cave monasteries, the 7 Rila lakes hike, God's eyes cave Prohodna, Plovdiv in the summer with all the festivals, just name the experience and it's there. Hope you come back one day and love it ^.^

Its better to rent a horse than using of BDZ (or trains) in Bulgaria…Its faster…And the horse doesnt stink so much as well…and it never catches fire…And why again masks?Because of the toillets 😂?
the train to Varna was fast enough, we travelled there from Sofia in 5 hours or so. A horse cannot do that, unless it is on cocaine or meth- like yourself :D p.s. the toilets reflect the culture of the travellers, if people keep them clean they will remain clean. On the train which we took the toilet was ok. There was an open hole below and so there was air curculating and it was totally acceptable. Dont spread BS on here, Macedonian troll.
What did you think of Marek's train tour? 🤣

So true! Summer time or maybe even autumn would be stunning with all the colours 😍 I think it could be really successful if they promoted it more 😄🚃

Are train journeys appealing to you? 😊
@@SarahandMarek yes they are 😊😊

Hi Nick 😄 That's so interesting! We would love to do this trip again at a different time of year, then perhaps we would be able to see more as well🙌🏼
