Not to our knowledge @Jinjin , just link your card, deposit your money and you are in. We have linked cards in our office here and checked our foreign statements... no problems

You'll be able to buy stuff in China from your own country, but not the other way around.
Hi mate! Thank for your video, It helped me to have the big picture of how money transactions work in China, however, I am a still little confused. I will travel to China next month and I don't know if I must be online when I'll make the payment in Chinese local commerce (supermarkets, shops, etc.), that mean that I have to buy a Chinese SIM card? Hi @Patrixia - thanks for the comment and glad you liked the video. You do not need a Chinese SIM Card to use AliPay, connect your card before you come and you can pay with AliPay offline generally, the payment will then come through for you when you get back onto an Internet connection.
That said, I would advise getting a SIM card from the airport when you land. It makes your life much easier when getting around and you can get them pretty cheap.

Hi Alice, yes you can indeed use Alipay outside of China and still buy things. However you must be buying from Chinese apps/websites like Taobao/Jingdong etc
What to do if the cards we input are not listed in the countries list?
Unfortunately this is at AliPay's discretion. There are many types of cards that can be used, if yours does not qualify, it might be best to contact them with your situation, see if they can provide any service.
Im going to vacation there next week. What does Alipay purchases with USA linked VISA credit card show up as on your monthly credit card statement ? Does it show as cash advance? does it categorize spending? I get 5x points on my American Express platinum and Chase VISA sapphire Reserve. cash advances hit me with all sorts of fees and interest from the time of withdrawal. is why I ask!! thanks . or do you just transfer enough for the whole trip? or can I do a transfer for each transaction?
Hi Joe, the purchases will not come up in your bank statement. Rather it will say something like Alipay TourPass Top-up. We're unsure if your bank will classify this as a 'cash advance' as it technically isn't cash however AliPay does need Money, not credit to be pre-uploaded to it for you to start spending. For a short vacation to China taking cash to China is still a great option as you won't be able to take the money you upload to Alipay back with you. You will have to find someone to send the money to and they give you physical cash in return. We hope that's helpful. Have you seen our how to use Alipay video?

Alipay allows you to connect a foreign debit, or credit card, for usage in China yes. 2,000RMB top-up per go
In my trip to China August 2023, I was not able to exchange my foreign currency (US$ & Euro) to RMB at the Bank of China I had to cut my trip short. I should have apply Alipay before, but wondering if my mobile phone may not work in China.

How can you withdrawal money from your Alipay account balance back to your foreign bank account/card? I tried adding my foreign card and it says it's not supported.
You cannot withdraw to a foreign bank account, only deposit to spend inside of China.
Must I be in China before I can use it? Or can I use it from anywhere around the world?
Hi Becca. There are merchants accepting Alipay in Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Iceland, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom. You can also purchase goods online from China and have it shipped to you with the help of Alipay.

Probably best to keep your Chinese SIM card just in case. When you change your phone number, it's very hard to deal with banks in these situations.
is it normal ? There is no tour pass for me . I only have in FUND TRANSFER : Transfer, Red Packet and family center . I use my Chinese number and I'am in China
Hi Imed, that's odd, is it perhaps in your favourites? There are four options in everyone we've use so far, so that we would advise perhaps checking with friends, searching in the app or contacting support.
I face an error or bug like (ALIN42288) when I pay for the visa fee or other payment from Americans websites.
So what does it mean and how I resolve it?
Hi Tasawar, the best thing to do here is contact Alipay and send them the error code. I imagine they will be able to give you the diagnostics you need :)
Can foreigners send a red packet to a local friend with tour pass? Also do locals use the 3 month tour pass too or is it just for foreigners? Thank you.
Locals will not use the Tourpass no. They will just use the standard version as the Tourpass expires after 3 months. It's targeted at people on shorter visits.
Tourpass is also only used for transactions and not red packets.

Hi Ali, I do think this is possible, but you should do the following...
Activate the RMB wallet by receiving a RMB red packet from friends and link a bank card in Mainland.
Using just your HK bank card will not be possible to our knowledge.
Ali tayyab,if you are using WeChat pay in Hong Kong it's so simple you can top up in Hong Kong in 7eleven,ok shop and McDonald or link your bank account for DDA but you can only use in Hong Kong,you cannot use HKD WeChat pay in China unless you have bank account in China and link with your WeChat.its only possible if you have Chinese bank account in mainland China so you can receive the Red pocket in RMB with your Hong Kong account.
I am using WeChat in Hong Kong and I have already linked my Hong Kong bank account and Chinese mainland bank account to use with both currencies.
I cannot top-up my RMB WeChat in Hong Kong but I can directly top up from my linked bank account in China.

It should work Andrea. We cannot give any guarantees since we are a language school with no affiliation towards Alipay. But if you link your card, you should be able to top up and use it.

Yes you should be able to make a bank transfer from a Chinese account to a foreign bank account. Best thing to do here is visit your local bank in China and ask how it's done because it will vary depending on the bank.
Can i buy a train ticket or subway ticket using alipay as a foreigner when I arrive to China?
Usually yes but there have been instances where some people with foreign debit/credit cards had an issue.
I can't even log in to my alipay they need my bank account but they won't accept it cause it's not chinese bank. What shud I do? (is the app really working?)

Difficult one to solve outside of China I'm afraid. I think you'll need to go back to the bank when borders open with your passport and you should be able to get your funds.
The only other solution perhaps is to create a PayPal account and link it to your Chinese bank, then withdraw it and send it to your desired bank.

@@RiantoEffendi With the bank you'll be fine. The number I'd keep your SIM card and try to re-activate when going back to China at the local shop

Can someone confirm how does the refund work for unspent balance? Do they refund that back to your credit card? What do they by "back to your bank account"?
That I am not sure, we've tried to spend all our money rather than leave anything in there. 2000RMB isn't a huge amount so you shouldn't have too much left either way but perhaps plan your deposits around what you think you'll spend.
If you do have leftover, we'd also be interested to hear how it goes. Maybe we can run an experiment here also
We just discovered the funds are returned back to you after 90 days of inactivity, so nothing to worry about :)
Can I use it even if I'm living in another country?

After sending money to my friends and merchants, Alipay has "suspended" my account, I don't know why, it's asking me to call the customer service at 95188 to restore account functions. But the phone number doesn't work. Any suggestions?
Hey Big A - hmm this looks like something we've not come across before. As an educated guess perhaps you went over a limit of money to send out, and they blocked it temporarily. In Alipay there is a section in ME called CUSTOMER CENTRE, they have a "Live Chat" service called CUSTOMER SERVICE at the bottom right of the screen. I'd say this is your best bet.
Hello and thanks for the information. I've uploaded the Alipay app successfully but there is no tour pass mini app available. I guess I just want to add funds from my card to my Alipay account.
Is there an alternative way to transfer funds if the tour pass mini app is not available?

Hi! Surprisingly this is the first time I have heard of this. Have you tried updating the app?
Secondly, you can use your credit/debit card to transfer funds to Alipay.

The only thing that comes close is an app called "tour card".
I live in Cambodia if that means anything.
Anyway, I reckon I have it sorted by long pressing the Alipay app and selecting " pay/collect" and paying with my foreign card by scanning.
I guess I'll find out if it works when I get to China. Your tutorials are very helpful thank you.

I notice that some of Alipay (支付寶）feature and service is heavy restricted and is not open to foreigner Alipay Account . To able to use some of Alipay feature Services . You have to bind China national ID to your Alipay account.

Hi Frank, that shouldn't be the case. To use it's functions (the majority for sure) you just need to have a card linked. Alipay is the same, there isn't a Chinese Alipay and a foreigner Alipay... you can change the language, but the functions should be the same

Hi Saurabh, this really depends where your money is and where you want it to go. China to India is a little vague. If you have a Chinese bank account you would need to contact them and ask for a way of withdrawing all your money if that's what you wish to do.
Sorry what kind of currency is kuai? I know about ReMiBi and yoan.

Probably because it's been inactive for a while. When you make a transaction again it should unfreeze it. Hope that helps.

Hi El do - if your bank card is linked you should be able to withdraw but don't worry, after 90 days of inactivity the money will be returned to your bank card automatically anyway :)

@@LTLChinese Starting 01/03/2020, Bank of Shanghai collects 5% service fee. My USA-issued Visa has no foreign transaction fee. Can anyone confirm this fee is recently collected when adding money to this TourPass prepaid card?
In fact, it is illegal to refuse RMB in China. But this boundary is difficult to define. For example, if some unmanned supermarkets or vending machines do not accept RMB payments, this "may" be held legally responsible.
But it is certain that if a taxi driver refuses to accept RMB, his behavior is absolutely illegal.

The minimum amount Tour Pass users would have to top up is 100 yuan, with the balance amount limited to 2,000 yuan. Any remaining funds left at the end of the 90 days will be refunded. So if I understand it correctly it will refund the money after 90 days if you have any left in the tour pass.

As expats in China, we never use cash machines. This news is more relevant to tourists coming to China. Our students being a prime example. We released this video for their benefit, not ours :)

They do KL. These are two of the most widely used cards in the world, both have no problems connecting. In the video, this was a Visa card

I'm not sure if this will work, I think it's designed for tourists coming to China to use internally here. You can still transfer your friend money, and receive it, if you both have Alipay or WeChat though

Jon C. It will be in your Alipay balance and you can spend it but you can’t transfer to your bank if you live in the US. The only way you can transfer it is if you have Swapsy. A guy from UA-cam help me out. I can send you the link so you can see how. You need credit on Swapsy to send money to your bank. Depends how much you are trying to send. It’s usually like $3-9 fee .. but if you have enough credits is free. It’s better than paying $18 to transfer money ... I’ve done it many times before.
