    I've never seen anyone give such detailed info on probably the most important thing -finances. Thank you!

    I bought 13 acres on a remote mountain in 2011 by using savings and borrowing money from friends, and then after having about half the property logged, paid them back. For the first 6 months, I lived out of a tent. Then I got an inexpensive old RV, then eventually built a small off grid house; all without debt. So it is possible to start a farm without debt. Most people can do it this way if they can find a place where its legal to start out this way. In NJ for instance, its illegal to camp on your own land.

    • @MarkChaney
      @MarkChaney 6 днів тому +6

      But you did have debt. You borrowed from friends. Either way, nice work and congrats.

    • @braeburn2333
      @braeburn2333 5 днів тому

      Yes, technically i did have interest free, short term, unsecured debt. If I had good credit, I might have been able to get the land by using zero interest short term promotional credit card debt.
      I think the most important thing is to get unsecured, zero interest loans, because paying interest is the same as indentured servitude imo. Thanks for the reply.

    Growing up in upstate NY a lot of my friends worked on family farms, which sadly are mostly gone. I hope to see more family farms coming back, you can’t tell me that there is no correlation between how we get our food today and the high rates of autism, cancer and other diseases that are so common now. We need to get back to the basics and grow/eat locally. So glad I came across your channel !

    Since you’re not living in the barn building nor on the property, I find the comparison of a residential space with your “commercial” challenging. I’m sure a commercial space would also be significantly more in town but the context changes a lot. Hopefully you will get into more about your housing plans on the property in the new year. That would really indicate the creativity to “homestead” incrementally on land.

    Hey, something might help, I used to keep honeybees on this lady’s organic farm, where it was idle property “she rented”, where one spot was 60 acres. Just in case you see the cause to have more land to farm but can’t foresee long term commitment. Sometimes paying taxes is all that’s asked! I think she’s retired now, but renting extra land is always an option!

    • @joebeach7759
      @joebeach7759 21 день тому +2

      I agree. Beekeeping would be great, especially with all the wild flowers. You would just need to have plants that bloom in rotation from April-September. Honey/wax is a great market. You certainly have the space to process it.

    • @Noone-rt6pw
      @Noone-rt6pw 21 день тому

      @ For me that’s days gone by, not even possible. Where I simply mentioned what I did have going many years ago as a reference point! But if you’re interested, it’s much more complicated today, where there’s the pest of yesterday and new pests that constantly add to the expenses as well as drama of beekeeping. Like beetles and ccd. But if you desire to give it a go, good luck!

      @@joebeach7759 No big deal. Beekeeping I had a lot of money in and it was therapeutic. Which anyone is interested it’d be good to take up beekeeping. In the 70’s before the varroa mites were brought in, there used to be clover all over the place and likewise honeybees. Only ones got stung were those that went messing with them. A bees interest is gathering nectar, not attacking as it stings that’s the end of its life! Yet it’s physically demanding and good for a person!

      I am seriously not trying to detour anyone getting into farming. The world has a food shortage and it's a great way of life. However, many, many ppl don't have a clue and jump into it. I am just saying many farms/homesteads close quickly due to poor research. The best research is going to a farm where you want to farm and explain your goals and ask if you can do some work as a temp to get an idea of what you're getting into. The farmer will probably give you better advice for your area and how to run it than youtube. Also be clear about the scale you're trying to do and methods you're into.

      to spread out your investments. By putting

    I am so impressed with your build and business ideas. You'll recover costs eventually and you will probably make far more than you spend. 🙏♥️

      its not detailed.... she left out the minor detail of what the building she's standing inside of filming cost... kinda matters. $1600/mo or $19200/yr is actually for most people a terrible investment

    Great job for doing this and informing people who are interested in buying land. Where do you live? Do you live in the barn or do you have a separate structure built for living? Can you build a tiny house on your land in Saratoga?

    Starlink is 100% of the reason places like this are suddenly appealing.
    Lack of internet in the modern day is unrealistic. Can't even apply for a job without internet, let alone perform one. Astonishing it's not considered a utility.

  • @Gary65437

    You need the Amish to show you how to get rid of the starlink ripoff and ask where the dump is to include that trip once in a while to save big bucks. You also need 3 or blue spruce for a wind break on the building which is very nice.

    You left out property tax & insurance. Once you start hosting events or workshops there, your insurance will become much more significant. If you are bundling insurance, I recommend looking into an Umbrella policy, which for me is very little, but adds a million dollars of piece of mind on top of every other policy I have should they run out. The county is going to start hitting you with unexpected assessments soon.
    But it seems like you are doing very well so far. Enjoying the videos!

      I already have insurance - and it's not that much money! I will make more videos when the farm is open to the public... but this video is strictly for barns/barndos, homesteads, and people wanting to run cottage style businesses.

      and she quickly glossed over paying for the building all in cash. So there is another $150-300K she does not take into account. Put that on a 10 year loan and you are looking at another $1,500-$3,000 month bill

      @@AlexandraFasuloBiz most cheap agrotourism policies are worthless.
      A decemt policy to actually protect yourself is $5,000- $7,000 a year.
      That is what actual farmers I know pay for a policy, who do agrotourism.

      @@vespermk I agree, that was my only critique. "Your gonna be surprise how less I pay, its only $1600 a month to run this farm" lol When she said 9 somethin a month for the land I surely thought the next cost was gonna be the building/s

      @@hobbyist5075 Thank god there is at least one other sane person commenting on this channel. She is putting out some information. I'm not gonna say its mostly good, cause its not. She is making too many assumptions that lettuce and rabbit poo will pay all the bills. Her online freelancing gigs and youtube revenue is paying the bills. Which is fine. But she shouldn't be presenting that a little road stand bringing $25/day gross income is paying for the land and all the amenities. when it is not.

    Consider “Ultra Low Cost Gardening (described by a book of the same title), or “Swamp Water “ fertilizer for your garden. The results are amazing and highly productive at almost no cost.
    We pass up such options out of ignorance and only buy into how corporate tells us to farm.

    Your water pumps are electric for the boiler, but radiant floor is the best. Also barndos are easily much more efficient than stick build as well. Less thermal bridging and more insulation.
