Amazing footage of Zephyr and the stick incident. I've had dogs communicate with me about specific things like that before more than once, but I've never seen one work out a complex geometry/spacial relationship problem like this one. Which she clearly did since she knew she couldn't get the stick through the gate herself as you said. The video doesn't show if she tried herself first but even if she did it's clear she worked out in principle there was no way. Besides the average human would try first anyway just to see in similar circumstances. Clever girl, Zephyr, there were a lot of moving parts to that problem.

Many, many times before, she has tried to get big sticks through small spaces and it always ends up with me doing it for her, so I think this time, she just decided not to bother even trying. So many different birds on that lovely walk and what a beautiful rainbow when you reached the top. I had to admire the way Zephyr made it clear that she wanted you to get the stick through the gate for her. Dogs are rarely good at judging the stick length and the path they wish to take . Have you ever thought of "guerrilla gardening?" Planting little garden plots wherever you moor, keeping track of them on a map (and maybe, adding them to your book), so whenever your in the area you can get some "foraging" in off of your little garden spot. You can let friends and fellow boaters know if you choose to share.
That is funny that you mention that as I used to sprinkle native wild flowers along the towpath beds that were bare, knowing that wild flowers look after themselves, but I haven't done that recently, so you have reminded me to get back into that again. Planting fruit and veg is a super idea too! Thank you for watching. Take care🌻🦋

I watch you because you take us with you. You talk while we watch. As soon as I have to watch some person raving on, telling me where their dog food is stored and were their toilet is and the knife and forks go, they loose me. Hello Simon, Earl sounds like such a sensible dog and perhaps far too intelligent to engage in activities like stick and ball! Lovely Stuff. My Wife and I have just finished at Pare Maxi Security Prison and are returning after 16 yrs from NZ in 3 weeks to live in a caravan and find alternative ways to live. Ive passed your videos on to a couple of my colleagues to help them de-stress after a long shift.

Tis now end of Feb '23 and just had to have another peek at this one, you have me in giggles Vanessa, that little girl opened the gates quicker than you did. Oops watch that ham ag stap, nearly broke your neck there... and a 'siege of herons' they didnt look like they could mount a siege...so gentle, so still like little soldiers!!! Vanessa that was a seriously great vlog..your nature photography was exceptional!! Even clicked a couple of shots myself (I know I've asked before and you said you didnt mind...hope thats still the case) to try to paint thanks for the inspiration. How you see the tiny fungi in a hole in the tree or a robin/wren popping in and out of a nest in the undergrowth beats me..I love that you live in the moment it is how I like to live too..thanks so much for the enjoyment and I think its great you included the gate loch boys in your poem, and wasnt little Freya a cutie, I will be checking out her channel as well.

Zephyr is way ahead of me, you are right there.😆 Freya's channel is so good and I can't believe she was only 3 when she was doing those experiments like that. I think that I find the little things when I'm walking because I walk at a snail's pace🐌 In fact snails overtake me!🤭 My journal has some errors and crossings which if you zoomed in, you might see and probably a pile of spelling mistakes too. One of your most interesting videos - The Foxton Locks. You brought the history of this fascinating place to life. Superb camera work with a wonderful commentary explaining everything we were looking at.
A great meeting place for people and dogs. No wonder you enjoyed the flight so much - loads of people to talk to!
The autumal colours were magnificent. The wild life, unbelievable - especially the Kestrel, Wren and 5 Herons, who were in a field all together in one place. Zephyr was incredible. Showing you how to take her stick through a gate, knowing it didn't fit.
Last but no least, was your beautiful poem and the chance to look through your journal, bringing back so many wonderful memories of cruises and videos gone by.

Thanks Vanessa, for taking us along on this lovely cruise. I did see a Buzzard once hovering whilst tearing away at a pigeon, but it was losing height quickly due to the size of its prey. I thought at first that it was a Kestrel but realized it was a huge bird when it came lower and close to a rookery of crows and then near to some large Herring gulls which are big birds, (it was a lot bigger) and they quickly moved away, so it was a particularly big Buzzard. I really loved as always, your beautiful Diary, but also lovely Zephyr the very clever dog. Take care and all the best. Stevie

Familiar scenes, Iv been on the River nene for a few years now. I think it’s such a beautiful area which you captured effortlessly. My dog used to love jumping out at the locks to make friends!

Australian kestrels seem exactly the same as the English, but magpies are huge and have the most beautiful song of any bird I’ve ever heard. I suppose they’re all related and some are migratory like people! Thanks again for another beautiful piece.

Stunning as always. I love the mushroom pictures as they have always caught my attention when walking in our local woods and further afield. There is something magical about them. Did you ever find out what the 'large' bird was? I hope you finally spot the elusive fieldfare and redwing.

I am so glad your volgs are back my Fridays are so much better again :) I get lessons in History Food and Nature. Those gates and swing bridges look hard to work you had help from Super girl I see. I loved the little story with you and Zeph and the stick and you get to chat with so many nice people. It's funny the names for a gathering of birds like a siege of Herons I have herd that a gathering of crows is call a Murder? is that correct?
