  • When you teach in an impoverished school district you have to be a savvy shopper to get all the school supplies you are going to need for your class.
    All supplies in this video were purchased from Staples the last week of July.

    I found out last year that Office Depot will allow teachers to take twice as many as the regular limit. You may want to start asking stores if teachers can have more than the limit advertised. The worst they can say is no. But I think most stores will allow you to take more than the limit since you are a teacher.

    Great that you did all that work of getting school supplies for students. Your generous for doing it. Not sure if I would be able to justify it if not reimbursed as it shouldn't be the teachers responsibility.

    Tina, I want to thank you for teaching me to learn to shop economically for the beginning of school! Just like you, I find that to be an organized and effective teacher, it is usually up to me to buy nearly all my classroom supplies as most of my parents seem to be unable to afford supplies, snacks, water, etc. I always try to get enough for all my students and have them ready for the for the first day of school. I give a big thanks to Dollar Tree, Wal-Mart, Teacher Heaven, etc. for helping me with new supplies for a well prepared Pre-K/Kindergarten classroom. School ends week after next, and thanks to you and all you help and encouragement I am already gearing up for August. Have a great summer. Thanks again, Mrs. Toni

    Staples has a teacher rewards program that allows you to buy I think up to 25 of an item at one time during the back to school season. (I used to work there when I was finishing my undergraduate degree). Make sure you tell your cashier you are a teacher so you can get your rewards card when they have the back to school sales so you can take advantage of the deals!

    In Australia we the parents supply all the kids supplies plus text book this is for grade 3 well all grades then we supply stuff for the teacher and the class plus pay school fees. I like the fact you don't buy cheap stuff you seem like a great teacher that cares about her students.

    Have you considered having community supplies? Rather than buying for each child to use individually, have buckets around the room with supplies, a bucket of markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, etc. The sharing of supplies can help students to take better care of the supplies and put them back where they belong (less loss of supplies) because they all suffer if supplies are ruined or lost. Also, do you fill up your notebooks and composition books each year? If not, hardware stores will often cut these in half for you (horizontally half-way down the notebook) so that each notebook you buy can be used for two students!
    I am a soon-to-be certified teacher and have observed in a lot of classrooms and these are some things I noticed and plan to revisit these ideas when I have my own classroom. I love watching your videos for ideas, etc!

      That's what my school teachers always did. The used to have a box between say 8 of us instead of a box each. Especially as kids lose things sometimes if take them home!

    Walmart has 2 pocket folders right now for 15 cent or you can get the plastic ones for 50 cents. Kmart has the pocket folders on sale for 10 cent right now. I price match at Walmart and have been able to stock up and even donate lots of school supply this year. I have seen a lot of teachers that don't let their kids have pencil sharpeners at their desks, but I think that's a good idea to let them have one. I have a small stash of supplies for my future classroom. I have got looks for buying things. but its better now then wait last minute.

    Target has a set of 5 poly folders on sale for $2.12 also if you have the target cartwheel app you get an extra 5% off of them so they would be $2.01 for 5 poly folders which are much more durable than the paper folders!

    My mom is a teacher and I have been going school supply shopping with her as long as I can remember. But I don't believe she ever had a problem with the limits? She just shows her school ID and they're usually fine with whatever she wanted to buy. Showing her ID also at times got her an additional discount too!

    I work in tittle 1 school. We send a supply list. Not everyone brings. My summer has been running to all the stores each week. Sometimes if it's not too busy I say I'm a teacher & I can sometimes get away with unlimited. I just ordered lakeshore & really good stuff things. Good luck.

    I am a middle school special education teacher and my school/district is also impoverished and I can relate to kiddos showing up with little to no school supplies. I have a little different approach to getting supplies for my room. Sam's Club or Costco are wonderful places to go to get bulk supplies at a really good price. Also, I don't think you can beat their prices on facial tissues,. The website Dollardays.com is great to find bulk folders, notebooks, and lose leaf paper. I also hit up Office Max and Staples in the end of September and October to buy the supplies on clearance.

    I didn't listen exactly about the pencils. I bought Walmart's Casemate fashion pencils because they also were on sale for 68 cents and they do not sharpen evenly. I can already tell they will not last long. Since I bought 7 packs of 12, there area a lot of pencils to suffer through. LOL

  • @lostindiancamp
    @lostindiancamp 8 років тому +9

    I'm sorry, but if the school does not give you the money to buy those supplies, that's just crap. If the parents cannot afford to buy the supplies, then the school should take up the financial burden, not the teachers.

    My situation is a little more unique. I'm going to buy school supplies for a teacher in Philippines and send off. So far if shipping costs are controlled , I can buy huge lots of things in bulk through Amazon. Just curious if this is better to buy in bulk than many smaller items? For example, buying gallons of Elmers glue then refill the smaller bottles as needed. Also buying crayons in bulk for 70 kids vs. 70 smaller boxes?

    I am surprised you bought all this from your own money. In my country the parents have to pay for all school supplies. You normally won't get a single thing from the school or the teacher.

    • @Kirschmuffin1215
      @Kirschmuffin1215 8 років тому

      I was at a school with a lot of children who came from (very) low income families, but they still had to buy there own supplies. It really isn't common that teachers pay for them at all. Families with children from 6 to 15 get some money specificly for school things in september (when school starts) on top of the money every family with children get from the government every month. That wasn't the case when I was young, but parents made it work somehow. After all school supplies aren't that expensive, except from 1st grade and everytime you change school.

    I'm in the same situation... we used to have a budget for every teacher. Unfortunately, it has dwindled down to almost nothing in the 20 years I've been teaching!! Does your school have any kind of budget for teachers?

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  9 років тому +1

      Christy Slyter No. Our school makes a blanket purchase for the entire building. I have on more than one occasion told administration to cut the teachers a check and let us be in charge of buying out own materials because we can get them for cheaper than the school does buying them from a preselected group of vendors but that idea fell on deaf ears.

  • @btina05

    Oh my gosh. I can't believe that you have to go and buy all the schools supplies! Do you have to pay for them out of your own pocket or do you get a payback of any kind? I'm rather interested, because I'm a teacher in Germany and never heard of such a thing. Either the parents get a list and shop for the supplies during the summer or the teacher buys them (if he/she wants something specific) and collects the money from the parents. In some school districts the city funds a part of the supplies so the parents can save some money but that's all...

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  9 років тому +4

      +btina05 I don't have to buy all the school supplies, but it is pretty hard to teach when you have children in your classroom who don't have any. No one makes me do it, but I love my job and my students so i do what I can to help and make the day run smoother.

    • @tonicraiker4321
      @tonicraiker4321 8 років тому +1

      Yes, I pay for all the supplies I purchase out of my own pocket. I teach in Texas, and I have never taught in a school that had a budget for anything extra. Most of my parents are lower income, so if I can help out in this way, I am honored to do so. I love my kids and it just makes things a lot easier and a whole lot happier! And to answer a question, "No, I do not get reimbursed," but I am still a very happy teacher!
