  • When we think about axis' jets, the first nation that comes to our mind is Germany with its Me-262 and then, Japan who had mostly imported the technologies of the Third Reich. However, this second place should be occupied by the nation that is not thought of at all. Italy, indeed, being the second nation to have flown a jet plane (before the United Kingdom). It developed its own jet engine technology development program without having to copy or even draw inspiration from its European ally. A program that could not succeed because the war had ended earlier for the kingdom and this by very little because an aircraft with this mode of propulsion was almost complete at the time of the capitulation. Designed by the originator of jet engines in Italy, Secondo Campini, it is the Caproni Ca.183bis.

    I never knew about this aircraft. Well done. I was aware of the Campini-Caproni quasi-jet. I even have a model kit of one. Not built yet. [I was thinking of a fictional North African theater camouflage with the white fuselage stripe, and adding MGs and rockets... Just for fun.] If you won't mind constructive criticism, HP stands for Horse Power and, when speaking, sounds better in long form. Same with MK, which stands for Mark. Abbreviations are needed when taking notes, but are best spoken out loud in a presentation.

    A very interesting aircraft. A quick Google check shows no model kits of the Ca.183 at this time. (Though at least one modeler built one by extensively converting a Unicraft MiG-7.)
    As for the Caproni Campini N1, Valom offers one in 1/72 scale since 2013. In addition, the old Delta 2 kit from Italy made in1974 may still be found online for a reasonable price. Though not as detailed as the newer Valom kit, the Delta 2 kit has appeal to those of us "of a certain age."
    Sadly, this aircraft (and the N1) don't get the attention they are due. This aircraft was made long before modern CAD in the time when an engineer had an idea, an actual working prototype had to be made to see if the idea lived up to its potential. Though ultimately the thermojet was a dead-end, Italian aeronautical engineers deserve recognition for exploring this method of propulsion.
    6th like.

      Indeed, Italian plane engineers were better than most people imagine. Plus, if the war lasted longer, Italy could also have its jet fighters like the Me-262 because they had a project named C.C.10 which was a a kind of Italian Gloster Meteor but of course not at all a copy because its propulsion was very different from other jet fighters of the was. So it is sad that Italian plane engineering got so few interest.
      PS: Thanks for the like :)

      @@F-14DTomcat I have the Valom N1 kit in my stash, waiting to be built. This one comes with hypothetical markings and is carrying a torpedo, so I got it for a better price than the Delta 2 kit from my Junior High School days. (That said, I plan to build it in its actual markings.) Though better detailed (especially the cockpit) it might have been fun to find and build the Delta 2 kit, detailing it with scratch built details. (But using online sources for reference.) I suspect most of these old-school N 1 kits are sought after by Italian modelers "of a certain age." They are hard to find in America.

      Well, you are very lucky to have all these models because here in France, it is nearly impossible to find planes, even toys, But at last, I can find amazing things on Amazon or eBay.

      @@F-14DTomcat When I was in Junior High school through college, the local hobby shops had a large selection of model kits from Heller that were made in France. Lately, I've seen some Heller kits on the shelves, but not too many. Is Heller still in business, or have they scaled back?

    • @F-14DTomcat
      @F-14DTomcat  Рік тому

      Heller is still in the Business but the only places where I found their models was in a toy shop maximum 10 years old kids (which is kind of strange) and there was a very limited variety of models which were the most common like the Concorde or B747 and some cars. So, I would say that they are kind of slowing down or maybe making sales only online.
