Thank you. On this night when the world feels on the brink of war, to happen upon this video did my soul good. A sure sign that the Holy Spirit is alive and well. Glorious improvisation. Thank you again for sharing your gift with us.
A very fine improvisation with clear mastery of harmonic and contrapuntal technique and a well balanced and logical structure. The plainsong melody is very skilfully segmented into different motives which are woven very effectively into the whole texture. This is on a totally different level to many 'French' style improvisations, which may impress on a superficial level but amount to little more than dramatic gesture and washes of sound. In contrast, the manual toccata figurations here are clearly patterned and executed, and neatly fitted to the beat and harmonic rhythm. The overall control of material and its technical execution is of a very high level and there is relatively little to suggest that this is an improvisation rather than a well constructed composition. Improvisers working in this style will have much to admire and learn from this performance.
What perfect analysis of the genius displayed by James Kennerley. as you so rightly say, there is substance here, and considerable substance, not just 'gesture and washes of sound'. This deserves to impress - AND IT DOES!
I've heard some great french improvisations that are both explosively attractive and masterfully structured. See Olivier Latry improvising on Lucien Deiss' "Dieu Regne."
James, you deserve a medal for playing anything, let alone this magnificent improvisation while people are squeezing past behind you! (I am sure that could not be helped.) At any rate, it's a great piece of work. Thanks for sharing it here.
The inter weaving of major and minor key systems was absolutely amazing. I hear Dupre and Messiaen and Kennerley, too. Wonderful, exciting and worthy. Blessings dear James. Thank you for sharing your heart.
I first heard this today, and have posted this thought to FB friends and family. ... This improvisation on "Veni Creator Spiritus!" ("Come, Creator Spirit!") is the most fantastic accomplishment I have EVER heard! Exclamation points cannot do justice to the wonderful gift of music this organist has been given. Every breath of the great organ indeed proclaims God's creative Spirit, even through such as WE are. If you have the courage to hear such as this music, may it bring you the joy you need in the days of Pentecost present and to come. (And, thank you, Mr. Kennerley!)
This is a very interesting improvisation, and sounds so different. I learned the plain chant Veni Creator when I was very young, which we sang at Confirmation ceremonies. It was very much part of the liturgical repertoire. He is having a lot of fun playing this.
Something about clearing away the clutter of hymnals and music sheets... I mean, this is the postlude to an actual service. Played as people are leaving the Solemn Mass... I'm impressed there's this level of video recording considering this; can't fault him for having such things around as they are part of what he does for the church. An astonishing improvisation and a very well-put-together video, considering the aforementioned.
James, This is the very heart of New Age Music. The sonic, harmonic transpositions are emotionally, mentally, and spiritually transportive and ascending. Congratulation. Master.
Excellent improvisation on Veni Creator. I am a fan of your playing. I only improvised in public once. Duruflé greatly influenced my compositional skills. It can be found on You Tube just browse "Mark D. Falcone Improvisation on Veni Creator Spiritus." I sent a version of it to Marie Duruflé dedicated it to her in memory of Maurice.
Amazing and Beautiful Inspiring Music! But my question is... how are you not afraid of falling off the organ balcony!? I work at a church with a similarly fearful height problem so I made them install an elegant fence so no one comes close to falling. Lord have Mercy.
phillyorganist2010 he isn't reading the music. There is a hymnal on the music rack, but it is probably only opened to the final hymn which may or may not use the same tune as this improvisation.
Of course! Airfare. Overnight (possibly 2) accommodations. Meals. Artistry Fee. Likely in the neighborhood of $2,500. And, no, I do NOT stay overnight with anyone.
Not so. The tune "Veni Creator Spiritus" is now in MANY denominational hymnals with appropriate ENGLISH texts relating to the coming down of The Holy Spirit. Do your homework, Ole Roman Collar.
Wonderful playing. To improve the visual I would suggest to clear away all the music sheets and hymnals, etc. Let the eye focus on your hands and not be distracted.
Stunningly gorgeous
The fire of the Holy Ghost was very present at this improvisation. It is totally amazing what happened here. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
FANTASTIC MUSIC!!!!!!!
Those of you just starting out on the organ, this is a great warm-up exercise!
Grandios, bei dieser Performance wird der kreative Geist kommen!! Einmalig... veni creator spiritus!!!

I've never heard anything like this..I felt as if I was before the gates of heaven!..this guy is incredible and so is his music..
Your right. Keep an eye on him... or ear, if you will. He's got fire and the technique. Yeah James!
This is beautiful work James. I genuinely am enjoying listening to you as you weave through different tonal centres and modalities.
Fine work here indeed, James. Very fine.
Wonderful improvisation on "Veni Creator", very Durufle in color and Dupre in fire!
I hear Kennedy - not the other two greats you named. Kennedy!
Loved the final indefinite chord.
Wonderful improv! Many thanks!

Stunning!
Love it and the surprise major chord at the end. : )
If that don't get the holy ghost down from the heavens, nothing will!
On the way to becoming one of the best? He IS one of the best and is on his way to be the absolute boss!

Amazing!
Fabulous!

Who in the hell are you dear James? Wonderful and totally inspiring !! Wow !!!
Bravo! Looking forward to collaborating with you very soon.
So Coolz. May I ask where can I find the scores to this wonderful playing ?? Thanks all
Amazing and Beautiful Inspiring Music! But my question is... how are you not afraid of falling off the organ balcony!? I work at a church with a similarly fearful height problem so I made them install an elegant fence so no one comes close to falling. Lord have Mercy.
This is wonderful. I see that Mr. Kennerley is reading the music. Is this published?
phillyorganist2010 he isn't reading the music. There is a hymnal on the music rack, but it is probably only opened to the final hymn which may or may not use the same tune as this improvisation.
and where is the music...??? in the speed and power of the organ?
What you're hearing IS the music.
Can I have you to be an organist in my parish? 😍😍😍
Of course! Airfare. Overnight (possibly 2) accommodations. Meals. Artistry Fee. Likely in the neighborhood of $2,500. And, no, I do NOT stay overnight with anyone.
Very good, very Fitting for only the Latin Mass
