  • Ostriches are the largest living birds. They also reach the fastest speed of land dwelling birds - in fact, they rival kangaroos as the fastest two legged animals on land! Ostriches also lay the world's largest eggs (at least currently). These birds are natively found in Africa but they've been introduced worldwide through farms as they're raised for their feathers, skin, eggs, and meat. Male ostriches appear different than females in that they're slightly larger and also have darker feathers.
    Scientific Name: Genus - Struthio
    Range: Africa (but farmed worldwide)
Size: up to 9 feet (2.7m) tall and 330 pounds (150kg) - males are larger than females
Diet: seeds and other plant material as well as animals like lizards and frogs (they eat stones to help with digestion)
    Lifespan: 50 years

Here's a good fact; While their feet may be something you should be afraid of, those are only the really obvious things. You SHOULD also be afraid of their head. I saw a farmer get knocked out cold from a headbutt. They'll just casually donk you on the head for whatever reason they feel is good enough, and with how long that neck is they got a ton of windup before it hits. Definitely nothing to mess around with.

Another way to tell ostriches apart is their beak. Males have red beaks, females have black beaks.

an interesting fact about ratites( the mostly flightless group of birds that includes these guys emus and cassowary) is that their genetics indicates that they all lost their flight independently, or at least close too it. the ostriches closest recent relative is the south american rhea, while the geographically much closer elephant bird is actually much closer to the Kiwi, which itself is not closely related to the moa it used to share new Zealand with.

Yes it's amazing to look into the lineage of all the flightless birds!

Ostriches really fascinate me, they are such huge creatures and really reminds me of a dinosaur. Isn't the ostrich related to dinosaurs i'm not sure. Have a nice day, really like the videos!

For perspective, former president William Taft, who was notorious for being a very big man, was about the same weight as the biggest ostrich ever!
