Last week I covered the basics of using the OP-1 but what happens if you want to use some external midi gear alongside this powerful all in one synth? Well, you need a USB Midi Host and in this video I break down how to use the Midiplus USB Midi Host with the Teenage Engineering OP-1 so you can control external 5-pin midi gear. My examples are with the Arturia Keystep and the Modal Skulpt but as long as you're working with standard midi connections, the same theory appplies.

What kind of gear do you like to use with the OP-1?
A Toraiz sp-16, can you help?
@@NahumLemayer I'd actually never heard of that until this comment but it looks like a pretty cool piece of gear! It looks like it has 5-pin midi in and out though so you should be able to get it talking to the OP-1 with a USB Midi host.
A Mpc live if possible
@@joefarrin Gotta get my hands on some Akai/MPC gear. I'm sure it's possible with a USB midi host.
Recently just snagged up my OP-1...but I haven’t purchased a midi host yet. I’m looking forward to jamming along with JU-06a, SE-02, TR-6, ZOOM ARQ96, and Hologram Microcosm!!
Worth mentioning that If you are using the USB cable for midi with the OP-1 you can eliminate some noise by disabling the charge function.
Shift + COM, "OPT" and toggle with blue.
you just changed my life ... thank you!
this is news to me! thanks!
5:05 BIG BRAIN!! seriously have gotten every bit of op1 knowledge from your channel. it sucks knowing the op1 is capable of so much but not really knowing how to get it to work. thank u man!
That’s awesome to hear! Knowing how to get it to work is only half the fun. The other half is just turning onions and seeing what happens! Glad to have helped you wrangle this little beast a little!
Really good explanation and the ambient jam at the end! Thanks for this video, Brad
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Great tips & tricks there Brad. Thanks very much. Super little jam there too. Cheers. Lee
Glad you liked it Lee! Thanks!
Thanks Brad for solving the OP-1 MIDI connection mystery for many of us :)
Thanks for these videos, I’m about to get an OP-1, which will be the first synth I’ve bought since a Minimoog six years ago, and these videos are really helping me get jumpstarted with getting accustomed to the workflow.
Awesome man! That’s exactly what I was hoping for making these videos! Thanks for checking them out!
Brad Tennant I also love your tutorial intro, it makes me smile every time.
Haha thanks! I still giggle every time too!
This is useful and of high quality, thank you.
Glad you found it useful! Thanks for checking it out!
Ground loop isolator!!! Wow I’ve been struggling with the op1 buzz almost given up on ever using it midi synced because of the hum. Wow. Game changer
It was such a simple fix when I discovered it haha
Loved the video- thanks Brad! I have the OP-1 & Scarlett audio interface plugged into a powered USB hub plugged into an MPC One & I cannot get rid of the OP-1 USB noise. I’ve disabled USB charging & tried multiple cables & hubs. Where would I put the isolator
Good to see you! Hope all is well
Doing well! Hope you are too!
the best intro of all time 😆
OP-1 content always 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!!
You can also use a sampler patch and turn the sample volume all the way down
Ahhh that’s a good idea!
That was helpful. Thanks :)
Glad to have helped! Thanks for watching!
Thanks!! 🤓
No problem!
thank *YOU*
No problem!
Nice hack (using the attack)!
Great video. I'm curious if there is a way to use an external midi device to control the in and out button so you could set the looping points directly with a foot controller or similar?
I appreciate it! I wonder if those are using a particular CC number/control. That's a little outside of my wheel house, but definitely a cool idea.
the intro is so good lmfao
haha thanks!
lol that ''thats me'' soo south park!
In terms of noise, did you try turning off USB charging before trying out a ground loop eliminator? Turning off USB Charging on the OP-1 com page should solve the hum without the need of a ground loop eliminator.
Yep! That was the first thing I tried but it didn’t change much.
Nice video! Can you tell me if using the MIDI host configuration in this video can send clock from another device back into the OP-1?
Yeah, I've used it to sync my SP404 and OP-1 before.
Pretty sure that you can’t control the op1 using the KeyStep with this MIDI hub (only works usb>MIDI and not MIDI >usb as he says
I’ve heard there are issues since the audio over USB update but I haven’t had a chance to go in and experiment - I’ve been slaving my OP-1 to Logic over usb with the 3.5mm jack out for my audio for my workflow lately.
So bizarre.. i'm literally in the process of returning my MIDIPLUS. Mine kept hanging after 30 seconds every single time! I've been connecting it to a Korg NTS-1. I have the right cables, etc. It works, and then it immediately stops working. And yet it seems to work perfectly for you! :) I'm totally bummed. It's such a good value.
That’s a total bummer! Mine has never given me any issues. Hopefully you get it sorted
Hey Brad! I am trying to sync OP-1 to EHX 1440 looper through a Hobbytronics Midi->Din converter which was included in an accessory pack on reverb that included Op-1 strap, crank, bender, ground loop isolator, etc etc. Last night I couldn’t get the 1440 to receive the midi signal. This morning my 1440 somehow magically started receiving the clock (lights flashing appropriately). Then i turned it off and reconnected, and now it doesnt work again. Do you have any idea why this could be? Could i need a new midi host?
That sounds peculiar. I've heard of people having trouble with their usb midi hosts ever since TE included audio over midi in the latest update. Not sure if that's what you're experiencing or not though.
I'm really bad at understanding MIDI. It's a whole weird world for me. I'd like to do a configuration like this: Arturia Keystep as controller (or host? I don't understand even the terminology) then two or three "controlled" midi devices: Op-1, volca fm, waldorf streitchfett, all controlled by the DAW (or maybe standalone to simplify a bit?). I have a Retrokit RK-006 but I'm really overwhelmed by all the ports and connections. Do you have any suggestions on how to set up all this mess? Thanks ;)
Oh boy. That’s a setup haha. I’m not the best at midi either but here’s my attempt to answer your question. Also, I’m a logic user so my situation might work differently than yours.
Plug the keystep in via USB. You should be able to then use it thru your DAW as a controller. You can also plug the OP-1 in via USB and thru your DAW settings turn of midi input from the OP-1 (otherwise it’ll also be a controller). If the Waldorf is USB compatible you should be able to do the same thing here as well.
You can sync the Volca thru the sync ports (I have a tutorial on how to sync OP-1 and Volca).
You’ll probably need to set your midi channels on all your gear to separate channels but once you have it all connected your DAW should then be set (automatically hopefully but you might need to dig thru some settings) as the master clock. If your OP-1 is set to SYNC mode (thru the tempo page - green knob) it should the. Sync to the DAW. Then the Volca will sync to the OP-1.
Issues that you might run into: every time you hit play in your DAW the op-1 tape will start playing as well as any sequencers you might have (Volca fm, etc). There’s probably some way to address that but, as I said, I’m also not the greatest with midi.
I hope that sheds at least a little light. It’s a pretty confusing thing to try and explain haha
Thanks for the video. It gives me hope I could get this setup to work at some point: I've got an miditech USB midihost and trying to hook OP-1 with Mopho, but no luck. I've checked the midihost works, since the midi came through hitting notes with my usb controller so it's not that. Are there some menus or settings in OP-1 I'd need to get right in order to get OP-1 send midi to the host. The only thing I've toggled is the midi channel setting in "com"-menu. Is there something else? Thanks.
I’ve heard of people having trouble with USB midi hosts ever since the updated the OP-1 to have audio over usb. But if you haven’t already, make sure the OP-1 is in EXT SYNC mode which can be set via shift + metronome.
@@BradTennant Thanks, will look into that.👍
How tight is the midi sync with your converter? I have been using the Oplab to sync other gear but the midi clock going out or coming in is not stable with with track record... they always start drifting after a couple of bars.
If I look at my tempo on the OP-1 when it’s being a slave it’s always jumping around a little bit. When I’m using the OP-1’s tempo to control everything it seems fine. I haven’t messed with the Oplab so I can’t say if it’s any better for sure.
Is there a way to get some self-powered MIDI host thingy? Would love to connect my ancient Yamaha QY-70 to OP-1... Both can function without external power.
I’m not sure a self powered host would work since it has to convert the USB midi info into standard 5-pin stuff. It would be cool if you do find one though!
Thankyou so much! I've been wondering if and HOW I could play the op1 with an external keyboard and I just aren't savvy enough to work it out myself. Your videos are a god send 🙌 thankyou 👍 😊
The ambient jam was definitely cool by the way 😁
Glad you found it helpful! I appreciate the warm feedback
I made a midi host out of an Rpi3. Only 35 bucks. 4 usb ports too.
I considered trying to make one like that but I have absolutely zero experience with stuff like that. The Raspberry Pi and Arduino DIY music stuff looks like a ton of fun!
Did you ever tried any Widi Host (Wireless Bluetooth with the Op-1 ? That would do an interesting video too ;)
Never tried widi yet. I’ve heard it works well with most devices tho!
Do you have to use a USB midi host? Can you just use a USB otg and a USB to midi interface cable? You just need the midi host if you need your gear powered through the USB right?
You'll need some way to translate the USB midi info from the OP-1 to standard midi info - that's where the host comes in. If you're using a DAW, you can plug the OP-1 directly in to a USB port on the computer, then send midi out of a midi interface (my audio interface has midi ports) to external gear. That's my current workflow with the OP-1 using Logic Pro X.
Geese!
I've got all kinds of geese and ducks living in the pond behind my place haha there's always honking and quakcking
@@BradTennant I'm surprised you only have 2000 subscribers your videos are really great and we'll produced, I hope youtube goes well for you
@@ababababaababbba How nice! Thanks man! I hope so too!
I’m very late to this video, but would i be able to trigger the op-1 with a trigger out on the tr-9?
I'm not positive but I think I remember reading somewhere someone trying it but the sync voltages didn't match up. I'm not 100% though.
So if I want to use the OP-1 master clock with Eurorack modular gear what is the easiest way to do this?
I haven’t jumped down the rabbit hole of modular yet so I’m not positive if there’s a special way to do it beyond a usb midi host. OP-1 has a click sync out if you change its sync mode to PO Sync (metronome/tempo and green knob) so that might work if you have a sync in on your eurorack setup.
Do you still need a midi host with the FW #243 on the original OP-1?
If you’re trying to go DAWless then yeah. I’ve been using mine strictly with USB audio in Logic myself and letting my computer handle all the midi sending/receiving. Way less of a headache for me.
im trying to figure out how to control the OP-1 with FL studio but the sync is terrible and i have no idea what im doing... is this possible?
more specifically i wanna make piano rolls on FL studio and send them to play the op1 synths
also.. i dont have a usb midi host
I’m not too familiar with FL Studio but I’m sure it’s possible. The OP-1 typically doesn’t like to be told what tempo to keep but it does a pretty good job of telling other gear to stay in time. Try to dig thru some FL tutorials on midi to see if you can slave FL to the OP-1. Sorry I don’t have any specific suggestions
I realize this is an older video, but thought I'll ask this anyway. When I upgraded FW from 2.4.2 to 2.4.3, my OP-1 would no longer communicate with the MidiPlus. Does it still work for you?
Interesting. I haven’t tried it yet. But I’ll have to look into it
Hi. Anyone know if a midi controller can control ‘record’ button on OP1, instead of using the OP1’s record [to tape] button? Thanks!
Interesting question. Not sure about this one myself.
I SEE GEESE. Thanks for the info, Brad!
Haha the ducks and geese make my apartment much more tolerable! Glad to have helped!
I connected skulpt and op-1 through the USB MIDI HOST, but It seems doesn’t work. Am I miss something? I put the heasphones on Op-1 I can only hear the sound of Op-1 no skulpt.
No audio travels over midi. Plugging the headphones into OP-1 will only give you OP-1 audio unless the mic/line-in is activated, then you’ll hear whatever you have plugged into the OP-1 as well.
Try connecting a 1/8th(aux) cable from the line out of the Skulpt to the line-in on the OP-1 and hit the mic button on the op-1.
I’d like to use a drum pad or a beat step to control the OP1. Is this doable? (To hang out drums like an MPC rather than using the small keys)..?
I’ve used the Keystep to control the OP-1 so I’d assume you could use the beat step no problem. You’ll probably need a USB midi host to make them communicate.
Brad Tennant thank you for your advice!
@@josephnakagawa8247 No problem! Good luck!
Now that interface costs arount $90. :( I found another one called Doremidi, but didn't find any review yet.
Does this work if I just want to clock sync?? I’ve got some AIRA/Boutiques and midi clocked effects pedals that I can’t use the PO sync feature like with my Volcas, Monologue, or RD-8
I've been able to clock sync other gear using this and the OP-1. USB on one side then standard 5-Pin in and out on the other, so just plug the OP-1 into the USB and then midi out from the midi host into the ins on your other gear.
Brad Tennant thank you so much, goodsir!! I’ve enjoyed your OP-1 jams for a long time, and now that I finally took the plunge and purchased my own..your tutorials are quite useful!!
@@MrGeoffashley I appreciate that man! Glad you're able to get some info out of them!
Hi, my usb midi host “midi plus” stopped working with op1 after the last firmware (usb audio). Has somebody noticed it?
Someone else commented this the other day. Haven’t had the chance to try it out myself yet
Hello. As I knew, I have to buy midi host and without it just not work? Thanks
You can avoid a USB Midi Host if you're using a DAW and have a way to connect your other midi gear to the computer. In this situation, you just need to plug the OP-1 in via USB to the computer and set up the proper midi channels in the DAW. But if you're going DAWless, you're best bet is some sort of USB Midi Host.
@@BradTennant Thank you so much. Dawless is my way 🤗🙏
SPACE MADNESS madness madness madness madness
🖖👽🖖
What’s all the gear there please Brad (apart from the op1)
Looks like we have the Arturia Keystep, the Modal Skulpt, the Roland SP404 SX, a MidiPlus USB Midi Host, and the Korg Mini KP2s effects box.
@@BradTennant You're a legend Brad
Does this work to sync the OP-1 and Novation Circuit??
Can't say for sure. I know that the signal coming out of the OP-1 isn't powerful enough to sync certain gear though. So I'd try to reach out in a Novation forum/group to see if anyone else has achieved it.
Way too much
Ok
