  • Part 2 has been uploaded: • The Philosophy of The ...
This is one out of a series of videos that analyses the Matrix's themes, philosophies, story, film making and design choices.
It does so with reference to a view and argument posited by the New York Times ambivalent reception of this movie who called for Action films to be simple / dumbed down.
One of the criticisms levied at the Matrix was that the film was too dense and philosophical.
This video tries to unveil some of its beauty and in-depth substance with a view to showing and making the case that action movies should still remain ambitious and not fear reaching meaningful depths in its movie.
It covers the ground breaking and industry changing things that the trilogy has done.

My personal favourite dialogue in the movie… from when Morpheus was taking Neo to the Oracle.
Neo: “so the Oracle is never wrong?”
Morpheus: “ try not to think about it in terms or right and wrong. She is a guide… that can help you find the path.”
    Woah … that’s deep.
    Masterpiece of a film!

The fact that people say the Matrix is inaccessible because of its themes, and amount of exposition are the exact reason why science fiction movies haven't been worth a shit in decades. Things should have gone up from here, the reason they haven't is because of the failure of the sequels.

I think films in general have become shit of late. Look at the blockbusters from the 70s through to the early 2000s. So many great films . Some are well made with great acting but with simple stories. Others have complex philosophies and ideas that are well portrayed. Whether it's alien. Aliens, terminator,Shaw shank redemption , jaws, matrix, batman dark knight , Lord of the rings.
I haven't seen a movie that left me thinking "that was awsome!!! Or thought provoking in years . Could quite honestly say for over a decade (aside from Noels batman trilogy) nothing has been at the level and standard previous films have. Standards at Hollywood have slipped horribly. The last decent thing I've seen is game of thrones and that's a damm tv series!!!

What made the Matrix so great is very similar to what made The Dark Knight so great (of course, Heath Ledger's performance also contributed) and also what makes tv shows like Black Mirror and especially Westworld so great. They work well on their own as a movie/show (great stories, well made, well acted etc.), but they also dare to dig into fairly profound subjects that make the viewers think and ask questions, and by working well as a movie/tv show it appeals to a wider audience than books or comics that deal with similar topics. I hope (and actually think) that we're moving towards more of these types of movies/tv shows in the future.

The complex story and themes explored in THE MATRIX added to the film, it never detracted.
When the film was released, I was an internet engineer/UNIX sys admin and network operations center manager.
I was surrounded by computer geeks and was one myself.
Having an action film presented with complicated themes was a revolutionary concept, and it took me three viewings to comprehend all of the aspects of the story.
Everyone I knew Loved the film. We loved being able to discuss it in detail and dissect the various plot elements.
To say it again, the film was revolutionary!
This is an incredible breakdown of the film's themes, with concise explanations of the theories that form the basis the Wachowskis used for the script.
    Excellent job!
Many thanks for your extensive extrapolation presented.

  • @datboi_gee

A couple things I'd like to note:
I believe it isn't The Matrix that misunderstood Baudrillard's work but rather Baudrillard that misunderstood The Matrix. If his foundation for such a belief is that the matrix is distinguishable from reality, his belief is mistaken as the matrix is only distinguishable to those in the know. Those living within the simulation are entirely ignorant to the nature of their reality. From their perspective, the matrix IS reality. Therefor there is no distinction. His work falls apart if we're to define simulacra as indistinguishable even with the knowledge of the "deeper reality" extending beyond it. Think Inception and their totems. They use totems to tell if they're still dreaming. Without the totem, they might get lost within the dream or simulation. And yet their knowledge of the circumstances of the simulation itself enables them to determine the state of their reality. Knowledge breaks the illusion. The same is present in The Matrix.
Additionally the idea that Neo isn't "The One" and that Morpheus was dogmatic and misinformed is kind of inaccurate. This belief is predicated upon the idea that what The Architect and The Oracle say is absolute truth. Simply put, just because Neo is ALSO an anomaly and has had what would be considered predecessors does not mean Neo isn't also unique to himself and functionally indistinguishable from "The One." He's shown time and time again to be divergent from his previous iterations as well as the expectations of those who believe they control him. What The Architect says will happen ultimately falls short and Neo ultimately does exactly as he was foretold to do. On a similar note, the idea that Morpheus lost faith in The Oracle and her prophecies is shown in the second film yet it is predicated on the belief that The Oracle was being 100% literal when explaining the future. That The One would reach The Source and the war would end. Because Neo is successful and the war doesn't end immediately, it's shown that The Oracle must have lied and that Morpheus must have been mistaken in his belief. And yet Neo DOES IN FACT return to The Source in physical form later on, defeats Smith, and ends the war. The prophecy DOES come true. Just not in the way and at the exact time Morpheus expected it to. The Oracle didn't say Neo would reach The Source and the war would be over 'immediately'. The problem wasn't The Oracle's words but Morpheus' expectation and interpretation of them. In the same way that The Merovingian refuses to give up The Keymaker and on their way out Persephone intercepts them. The Oracle never once told a lie to the humans. She was always right. Therefor Morpheus was always right for believing in her.

Baudrillard understood the matrix, the matrix doesn't understand him, it at least doesn't agree with him. Baudrillard expressed the real world has being gone already and beyond distinction from simulation in many regards. Whereas Neo and the inhabitants of Zion know the difference between reality and the illusion and the very fact there exists those outside the simulation with such a clear visible view of its borders and the separation from the real doesnt exist in our universe. They may exist in Neo's because his simulation is a literal digital prison whereas Baudrillards work regards one place of physical existence encompassing us all so there is no "unplugging." Baudrillard felt the very concept of unplugging created a false sense of safety especially because the clarity of its lines are distinguishable while the simulations in our reality are not. Not at least anymore. Baudrillards belief was that there is truth gone from this world that can never come back. To those in the movie the truth is "the real world," which makes no sense because even if humans escaped the matrix what would they create? Their very knowledge about the society they should create comes from the machines. They have no idea what existed before. Imagine the humans escape to the "real world" and make the cereal "tasty wheat" how would they know what to make it taste like? They would be forced to sculpt that taste based on what the machines taught us tasty wheat tasted like so the truth of that is gone no matter whether in the matrix or the real world. There would only exist the simulation of what it tasted like that the machines had left us because it's TRUE taste was gone from.this world. The matrix misunderstands Baudrillard in thinking that our worst fears of a electronic cage from which there exist an external freedom. There isn't. At this point the real world and the machine dreamscape are the both now the matrix and a part of the simulation. It seems the matrix ressurection may in fact remedy this mistake by turning the events of Zion and the real world into another system of control. Another illusion. Because like Baudrillard says truth is gone and we can only learn to deal with the simulation not escape it. There's no longer anything to escape to.

4:19 This seems like a good video but having studied Descartes with one of the best philosophy professors one could hope to find (Janet Broughton) I would say that you are misunderstanding what the quote "I think therefore I am" means.
Descartes started with that quote and used it to go all the way to confirming that there must be a benevolent God and that our senses must be accurate. Not because we can think about reality, as you say here, but because he deduced from "I think therefore I am," through a long chain of reasoning, that there must be a benevolent God would not allow us to be deceived.

*Hindu's Sanskrit Shlokas used in The Matrix Revolution movie*
‘ *Navras*’ is a song from The Matrix Revolutions soundtrack by goa trance band Juno Reactor, composed by Don Davis and featuring vocal elements by Lakshmi Shankar and Azam Ali. The song contains an adaption of the Asato ma mantra found in the *Hindu* sacred text the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, section I.iii.28, used in the soundtrack of the movie trilogy The Matrix. The name Navras might refer to the notion of nine rasas (nava rasa) in Sanskrit aesthetics.

it depends on the level of intelligence of a person is whether a person will understand the matrix or not. It's not until I went through some of my computer classes that some of it made sense. For example, how an anti-virus works or virus replicate or what is an OS. The philosophy part of the matrix still eludes me.

But I do find Neo to be the one. I don’t doubt Morpheus’ dogma as you stated which was mentioned to be false in part 2. How could he not be the one when he’s able to do extraordinary capabilities unlike anyone else?
In terms of choice and the illusion of that as presented by the Architect, I saw him not only as the villain but a manipulator as well. He pressures Neo to try to make the wrong choice. This here also shows the one going beyond the rules and authority, and making his path. Ultimately, mankind is saved.
    Correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @ModernGamerTV

Thank you so much for the comment :D
His unique abilities is not because he is the one but because he is an inherent anomaly that is tied into the programming of the matrix which keeps coming up every time the machines reload it (the architect would have otherwise made a matrix that is of perfect mathematical harmony) - I cover this in part 2 of the analysis in much more detail which you can find on the channel.
As for the manipulator bit about your comment it is very good you picked this up because the architect is purely mathematical and has gone about making a matrix that excludes many dimensions to human existence hence why the Oracle was made to assist with subsequent reloads. You are right that he was being manipulative, he did give Neo a pretty deep ultimatum, save trinity and risk extinction of the human race or reload the matrix as per the Architects conditions.
This also ties into the 3rd bit about your comment, Neo decides to wing it, save trinity even if it meant risking the entire human race. He does decide to walk his own path, rejecting the masonic and prophetic role that was ascribed to him by the other zionites. He decides to figure out how to salvage the human race after saving his love :)

@@ModernGamerTV dude, mathematical anomaly= the one, if I'm not mistaken, taking it a step further, in mathematical language binarily his whole being, anomaly, and all that, whatever, broke down actually = it to +1, or 1. I forget somebody had broke it down on another video how binarily his story and everything and added up to 1.but anyway just taking yourself outside of the box look at it about him being an anomaly that really made him the one cuz nobody else is able to do the things that the anomaly was able to do or achieve the things that he was going to be able to it to you by being able to do those things, so yea he was the one

@@ModernGamerTV I’m going to have to disagree. I think by choosing to save trinity, he is still acting in the prophetic role. Choosing the other door like the others did would mean certain destruction of Zion and it’s inhabitants and then a reboot. By choosing to save trinity maybe neo felt that he could also save Zion as well and was willing to take that risk in an attempt to save everyone. Maybe choosing trinity was the only way to possibly save everyone else. I like to believe that neo is still the one because he still has the power of choice and the choice he made saved everyone even though it cost him his life.

On the one hand, I totally agree that the Matrix has no idea what Boudriliard said, and crashed together incompatible philosophies. However, one must always be careful when referencing these sources, that one doesn't let the language trick you into unquestioningly internalizing the self-rationalization of the unhappy burguoise philosopher who wrote it.

Pincho Paxton what did you understand

    • @pinchopaxtonsgreatestminds9591
      @pinchopaxtonsgreatestminds9591 6 років тому +4

I understand that we can be living in a computer simulation similar to any other computer simulation, and that there is a real world outside of the simulation. The second level is ruled by Ai robots, and that world could be a simulation as well, it is more likely that the third level would be the real world, but we never see the third level. Neo can control the simulation from within the simulation by taking control of the programming, and by doing that he can free humans from the simulation prison.
In reality we really are living in a simulation, and The Matrix is just a clue within a movie. The simulation that we really live in is to rehabilitate us to live in the second level, and we still never get to see the third level. Aliens on other planets cannot be found because evolution always leads to life living in simulations, and so never send messages out in the real world to other planets.
The biggest clue that we really live in a simulation is the time-frame which has been set in the computer age, introducing us to simulations right from the beginning. That is the part of the rehabilitation that we wake up understanding simulations so that we accept what just happened to us. Computer games like The Sims are all clues, and that time-frame only ever happened once in millions of years of humanity... the Sims was introduced to us with odds of millions to one. The introduction of the home PC is deliberate in this time-frame, and that means that this has to be a simulation for real.

this is a great intro to the matrix, and i enjoyed watching it. i do have a difference of opinion on one topic: the interpretation of the film with regards to jean b (never can spell his name). he did not like the way the film interpreted his work, and i think that is because the film (and ultimately all 3 films certainly do this) reject his conclusions. i don’t see it as a hollowed out copy of his book. i see it as commentary that his book is mostly empty. i think the films are a hopeful rejection of nihilism, and they make more than enough references to his work to ensure that there is no confusing their rejection of his philosophical conclusions. anyhow, that’s my attempt to explain it, and hope it makes sense. best wishes to you.

According to youtube, people are very interested in the 18:09 to 18.26 section of this clip... hm, " awakening ", " enlightenment " (..?). Nah, it's a tried and tested field already. Buddhism was banned in Joseon Dynasty Korea, for example, as " a sham ". See the work: " Various treatises concering Buddhism " or " Various arguments against Buddhism " as a piece of literature at that time, as one of the main works behind the government's complete banning of Buddhism, including no monks allowed near the Capitol (capital).
Considering that 18:09 is so popular, ok, then people are thinking " how can I become enlightened " or " how can I achieve an awakening ", similar to Neo in The Matrix. Ok that makes sense, people seek the truth, so then they check Buddhism, check hundreds of movies, check interviews Etc. Etc. Theoretically, to achieve a real enlightenment, then we have to stay within hard facts, and Buddhism isn't known to be a factual religion. It has some concepts of Karma, reincarnation, although the " enlightenment " is more like spacing out in a trancey way, they don't acquire any new level of truth, they just " space out ".
The simulation theory in The Matrix is similar to entering a game, like if we created a super-real VR game 200 years later, which has been addressed in other discussions & videos, such as: " 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation? "
However their central idea [in the 2016 MIT Harvard Etc. debate] is that the entire universe is simulated more or less from the point of the start of the universe, which was 13.1 billion years ago according to our measurements. So it's like the simulation started back then with the laws of physics and finite x amount of energy and matter (our universe... with '60 Petaflops' of energy, a finite amount, not infinite). That's not ' a game ' it's just like " hitting start " 13 billion years ago, then that's all. And if that's true, it's like, " so what "... what's the difference? There's two worlds, the other world is separate and 'above us' or 'alongside us' for 13 billion years!. ?.
In The Matrix they can exit and enter the world like every day, so it's very different. There will probably be some unhealthy kids 200 years later inside a VR simulation which forget that they are in there, then someone needs to turn off the computer, and they are suddenly outside of their VR after 1 week or 2 weeks in the VR。
A good video on the topic of the game-like simulation, is " What If the Earth Does Not Exist? " by Riddle. Available in youtube. However, the more serious concept, that a simulation started 13.1 billion years ago by our measurements, which simply runs & that's all, could possibly reach evidence sooner or later which is discussed in the 2016 panel debate, i.e. some sort of sensitive instruments which measure " cosmic energy particles " which tear the fabric of spacetime, so those instruments reach evidence that there is a spacetime, which can in fact... be torn.

I don't think the Matrix misunderstood Baudrillard at all (who BTW was carrying on a long line of thoughts from other philosophers - see The Mind's I for example). The hyperreality of the entire Matrix cycle (not just the Matrix simulation itself) is the simulacra that has replaced what was there before (machine/human co-existence) which replaced what was there before (pre-AI) and so on. It's all new systems of control replacing old systems of control, an allegory to our real world.

Just to say.. I know the movie is based off Neo being an Anomaly. But the prophecy was true. Showing that in either real world or simulated controlled environments that the creator of All still has dominion over what is created even indirectly. Hence there is A Power or God that is/ existing intelligent designer... and it's nothing we can do or any choice we can make to change it. Neo was the one and Morpheus was right it was only semantics under an anomaly definition that was used to create the self doubt in the believers but the actions carried out by neo saved the humans..... What is ones definition of salvation? If you are created for a purpose and given choices then your interpretation of what your purpose is can be very diffrent to the actual programming purpose of the higher force for you. Hence you are a Savior Vs no you are an anomaly.. Same function same action that will be defined by others who see it from the outside. Just different interpretations about the action one takes.. The one being translated into Anomaly given its own definition but still supplies the same role and function of a Savior.. Nuance that is all

Note Trinity said he couldn't die because he was the one to her because she fell in love with him that was triggered by the prophecy then he came back to life. The prophecy was another form of control in the matrix passed down from the real Creator of the real world but they interpretated it from being from the matrix hence it's designed by a programmer that's not real . Even to the point Neo could use power outside the matrix. The movie is based off ones own individualality to use his or her purpose wether high roles or lesser roles to help save humanity which is God/YHWH purpose from the first fall... Notice they made a matrix to perfect for humans but our ways caused them to have to change it to an environment that suited our sin or self desired nature. So the problem was us fighting against the real programmer God and we created programs who were inferior to us that became our God in there programming created for us. The dream in the dream in the dream.
