  • See the next short for the subaltern studies. Some kinds of nationalism only arose to fight imperialism. As empires decolonized, historians sought to illustrate how previous history had supported colonial subjugation. Franz Fanon theorized that imperial powers imposed a cultural hegemony on indigenous people that alienates them, much like how WEB du Bois proposed the idea of double consciousness, where a marginalized person thinks in a way that subjugates them by devaluing their self-worth. Edward Said built from that, showing that Westerners described Easterners (or the orient) as exotic and irrational, thereby needing subjugation to impose supposedly superior Western virtues.

I know the shorts are bêtes noires for many creators, but it's been interesting to see what my favorites have done with them. This a quick introduction to some great names and such a relevant topic!
(Reminds me that I have some thesis level coursework in post-colonial, feminist francophone literature, still pending! 😸 It, too, is more relevant now then when I started...).

I've heard it pronounced the French and English way, but mostly English. That's what I'm speaking, so that's what I went with

Well embarrassingly I have (had) no idea who Franz Fanon was. Given both where he was born and where he had citizenship it's probably pronounced the French way.
That said how many of us say Napoleon correctly? Sounds like an interesting interview with another professor that focuses on language and history.
If you're speaking English is it disrespectful to anglicize someone's name? Is there a difference between doing it to their face vs a long dead historical figure?

I don't think pronunciation is as much an issue in this case, where the person isn't present. Also, he's using one of the acceptable pronunciations. Tone counts, as well. If someone's deliberately mispronouncing or not bothering to try to get the pronunciation right, then that's different. I'm getting GW Bush cobwebs stirring in my brain....

@@erinmac4750 Acceptable according to what standard?
It's acceptable to call a certain Persian country I-ran... But every Iranian English speaker I've ever spoken to said that pronunciation is grating on their ears.
I'm not debating you; just starting (pushing) a conversation.

@john2g1 I ran thing is somewhat unique as it's a product of English not having a combined ei sound that Persian and arabic has
I've mostly heard it pronounced ee-ran but im arab not Iranian

The problem with post colonialism is that it is used as an excuse for human rights abused, and regional idealism

Dunno how you could possible construe the first one, but regional idealism is kinda the point. That's up to you on whether you value it, but that's definitely not some "evil"
