HIgh School Football Player Dies On Field After Scoring Touch Down

- An NBC station reported a high-school football player collapsed and died moments after scoring a touchdown. Citing figures from the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the affiliate reported Luke Schemm's on-field death was the 11th fatality related to high-school football since July. His father told reporters the 17-year-old high-school senior was playing for Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs, Kansas, when he scored a touchdown in the middle of the third quarter on Tuesday. David Schemm said, "We do not know exactly" what happened.

He was a young man I knew very well. I had the privilege of living in Sharon Springs until a few months before his death, and then came back to assist with his funeral. I also had the privilege of announcing their next game on the regional videostream system that covered them. Luke was an outstanding young man in more than athletics. He collapsed on the sideline during a timeout, was taken to an area hospital and then flown to a hospital in Denver, where he died a couple of days later. As best as could be determined, his death was not caused by a football injury - in other words, watching video replay of the game, there didn't seem to be any abnormal hits during the game that would have caused an internal injury like what he had.
The game did continue because at that time, he was still alive, but neither team was really into it, and since the outcome of the game had pretty much been determined at the time of his collapse, the rest of the game could have been stopped.

I had a friend who passed away at a cross country event, she had epilepsy and fell into a seizure while on her run and I believe ended up in a coma and did not make it through the next few days. You will forever be missed Samantha 💙

My cousin played for Colville highschool here in Washington. Last year 2 April's ago his close buddy Dale Martin died. Same thing happened actually. He went to the ref and said "I don't feel good" and collapsed. He never woke up. It's been so hard for my cousin man. The whole Colville community

i know very well what these fella are going thru. both teams. my fullback running behind me a pulling guard on an end sweep, collapsed and died in a game in late september 1967. southern Illinois btw, the entire opponents team and coaches attended the funeral of the 16 yr old . brain arterial aneurism, was dead within seconds of hitting the ground when tackled.

that doesn't happen to teenagers...the most likely cause is something called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Its genetic and it sucks a bag of dicks...number 1 cause of sudden death in young athletes

He was living his life doing what he loved. That's how we should all pass on. So many people die in other ways.
I’m sorry for your the loss of this young man and all others that do succumb to heavy hits. I have had one son play High School ball and another starting this year. We trained today. Well he did. My health is not where I am nor will I ever be capable to be any more active than simply walking due to a spine disease and botched surgery. I pray for my kids and all kids and adults out there who will play under the lights. I did. I loved it. But I know it’s a risk and I am willing to pull my kid in a second. I also respect their wishes and they respect mine. God bless this young man’s family and friends. Hug your children. Let them know you love them. Say it and mean it. Back your love up with emotion and hugs. Trust me it matters.

I know football can be a fun challenging game, but please, please be safe. My mother and I passed by a new football field they made in my local town, and she said that she knows it can be incredibly fun, but she wishes they would outlaw it, because of the vast number of concussions in players. If you must play football, please do not play too hard and be safe, take breaks.
If there's any one way I'd like to go out. Scoring a touchdown is the way I'd choose. Rest in peace Luke.
