Do You Have The Wrong Understanding About Hatching?

What is the right way to hatch? What direction should we hatch in? These are common questions in drawing, but they underestimate the value and uses of hatching and cross hatching. In essence, they are the wrong questions to ask. A better question would be: What effect am I wanting to create in my drawing? And then: How can hatching help me create this effect. The answer to these will give us the answer to any other question we may have about cross hatching.
