Verdi's Requiem is one of my all-time favourite works. I've sung it several times and it never fails to lift me up so far off the ground that it takes me days to come down again. I'll be singing it again in a few weeks time in Winchester Cathedral and even in rehearsal it gives me the shivers. Wonderful!
I always compare Verdi's Sanctus to that of Berlioz. They are 180° from each other. The quiet sanctity of Berlioz soars into Heaven, and Verdi takes me to Radio City Music Hall. Loud, exciting, wonderful.
Given the theme and the forces used (double chorus) this fugue sounds like an exercise in counterpoint. It does not sound glorious in its melody but rather tries so hard to keep the counterpoints "correct" in a very academic way. Still love Verdi's colorful ideas for the Requiem.
Oddily enough this reminds me of Beethoven's fugue studies, he too did not think on counterpoint terms, and had to do a lot of intense studies on the matter before implementing fugal texture in his works. For my ears Beethoven was more successful, particularly with his Missa Solemnis and the Hammerklavier 4th Movement.
