What is seldom taught in Texas history courses (I went to high school in San Antonio) Is that there were a number of Irish who fought for Texas in the Texas Revolution. My ancestors were recruited by Mexico and given Mexican land grants in South Texas. The Irish were recruited because Mexico assumed that they, as Catholics, would be a buffer between the Anglos and Mexicans. WRONG! Most of them supported the Texas Revolution. My ancestor William Quinn, born in Ireland died at the Battle of Coleto Creek and my 4th great grandfather, Felix Hart also of Ireland, was murdered due to his support of Texas.
The San Patricio batallion were Irish deserters from the United States Army who fought for Mexico against the gringo invaders . Texians were/are invaders of Tejas Mexico. Pirates!
@@marthagomez7335 I am aware of the San Patricio Battalion. However, the Irish who settled in San Patricio and neighboring Texas counties were not those men. My ancestor. William Quinn was born in Ireland and settled in what was then Mexican owned Texas. He and his comrades fought "AGAINST" Mexico in the cause of Texas independence. Another of my ancestors, Timothy Hart signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Goliad. And, another ancestor, also named Timothy Hart fought against Mexico in the Texas Mounted Rifles during the Mexican American War.
