It's the fact that the visual "upgrades" feel more like downgrades to me. Everything has this off look to it. The Epic Store exclusivity on PC doesn't help.

I'm not the kind of guy that asks this, but do you think you could try some of these levels with 3D turned on in Dolphin? Especially this level? It's a favorite of mine and I feel it would be such a spectacle to see (even though I'll be viewing from a lower res 3DS screen). My computer couldn't handle 3D 1080p 60 fps. The recording setup I tried failed to produce a clear picture when recording at 480p (which seemed to work fine with 3D).

+Jim Hall You can record videos in this quality with (almost) any specs. You just gotta use the Dump Frames feature. You will need a video editing program after that though.

This stage alone is the reason why anyone saying that this game is "(one of) the best 3D Sonic game" are full of shit. The art design can be summed up as the gay version of the Egg Fleet. Eyesore inducing colors and boring disposition of the ships. The music is unstomachable ear rape with no rhythm. And the level design is pathetic AF : 80% overly linear, self-playing Quick Step to Win, 20% claustrophobic, tedious, and way too long, vertical 2D gimmick-driven crappy platforming.
Yeah, the Area theme even served me as a ringtone for some time). One of the best tracks in the game! As for Shadow the Hedgehog, I must say, I like dark and what some people might call edgy things in my Sonic games. Although, I don't like all Shadow the hedgehog levels, as most of them are quite dull looking. And I'd take another Shadow the hedgehog over SLoW any day. :D
Nano COM A space fleet is always a cool theme. But not a fruity one. "Not everyone is addicted to dungeons and dragons or depressing (albeit well crafted) gory European-styles. If you want doom and gloom play COD Black Ops or Shadow The Hedgehog (Japans appeal to dull Western tastes)." Awwwwww look at that cute assumption without evidence. In the same case, not everybody are addicted to claustrophobic blocks you have to undo with some lousy gimmick, or waste over 3 minutes seeing the game playing by itself while nothing but rainbow vomit inducing scenery is rubbed on your face. You know, there's that one thing called balance. Just like ShTH was too dull (although Circus Park has something to say about that), Colors is way too fruity. And that's where the middleground comes in the form of the SA games or Unleashed......Too bad is nowhere to be seen in the recent games.
