- My friend Jean-Paul asked me ( Denis Chang ) to record a bunch of his guitars so it was a lot of fun for me to try out all sorts of guitars... He is preparing a website to display his collection. You can email him for more information or purchasing info (not all of them are for sale)

The very first guitar is my own AJL X-O that I absolutely love!!!
This is done informally so the quality is not perfect (still better than most videos made using amateur equipment). Furthermore, like an idiot, I forgot to bring a guitar pick and had to use one of those ultra thin singer songwriter style floppy picks hence the strange pick noise in the rhythm playing...
I used an Audio Technica pro 70 to capture sound, which is great for live situations but in this case, it doesn't capture the true characteristics of the instruments. The videos will be done with better microphones in a proper acoustic setting eventually.. But for now you get an idea of how these guitars sound.
Regarding the recording, we used the same recording settings for every instrument. No volume/gain adjustments. No EQ , just a little bit of clean-up of ambient noise (such as the AC in the background) and a tiny hint of room reverb.
Most of the instruments were fantastically restored / repaired by Montreal luthier Martin Tremblay www.tremblayluthier.com
The idea was to play the same thing on various guitars. The solo section is the patrus53 theme by my buddy Rino Van Hooijdonk. The rhythm section is Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt / Stephane Grappelli
For those who don't know anything about these guitars, these are the type of instruments used by legendary manouche guitarist Django Reinhardt. Most of these instruments are also from his era. (1930s/40s). These are steel string instruments NOT nylon.

YOU SEE! IT'S ALL IN THE KNEES!
That first one is exactly what I want a guitar to sound like. Beautiful collection!
The busato at 4:15 is very sweet as well.
Thanks for posting this! Good to see/hear so many great guitars.
The Siro Burgassi at 2.26 sounds so sweet and pure.
Thank you for demonstrating. It is great to hear and compare the same thing played on different guitars. Those are some really nice guitars too.
I really like the sound of the AJL (first guitar shown) it has that perfect dry dry sound
really impressive collection. Well done!
To me basically all of those guitars sound about the same. They all produce that barking percussive and ugly noise that makes these instruments so wonderful and so easy to be discerned . Just love it.
I've read the description! =)
Thanks for uploading this, enjoyed it greatly.
Cheers from Brazil!
Awesome vid! Quite a range of tones...
Great collection
I really like the first 40s Busato Moyen. the Sonoran has a great deep sound for a room but the Di Mauro Django sounds like it comes from a Wood Allen movie--- great for recordings. Thanks D.
Excellent.. Une très bonne vidéo... Très interessant.. Très utile... Un grand merci
great idea! thx for your work !!!!
I love this video! Thankyou.
The dark Busato Moyen Modele was that most extraordinary. Beautiful sounds
becasue its on a pickup mainly, i cant hear the tones of the guitars as they should be which is a little frustrating
Totally
I'm going to have to learn this little jingle and play it every single time Patrus wanders by at the next Djangofest.
Favino sounds really good to me ! Great comparison video Thx !
Very nice dude. very nice
Lol, that Busato Moyen model 1940 has traveled a lot! I bought it from Mano (Guitare Mano, garantie sans defauts! 🤣) at the 2006 Samois Festival. We restored it, basically a brand new fretboard (copying the original design)and various appointments, new set up. I sold it to Caravan Guitars in Chicago back in 2007 or 8
The Busato Sonora sounds great...and finally tracked one down! They sound fantastic!!
Selmer 1940 sounds incredibly good
And they all sound different Wow
We should hear this guitars without pickups. We should compare the real accoustic sound
Its really annoying i agree and considering the guitars, one would think a microphone would have been used in a beautiful studio
he is using a lapel mic and not a pick up, isn't he?
yep it's a mic.. and this is not a studio but the home of the collector!
and you can not hear the real sound until you listen infront of the player. you hear the microphone, the recording hardware and whatnot. at tge end you may hear the shitsound of the tablet, the smartphone or some bad apple headphones or what ever. so why bother anyway and just listen the difference
Bloody awful review
Interessant. La selmer sonne bien, elle a une singularité marquée. La Favino aussi dispose d'une signature s sonore bien à elle.
hey thanks for your contribution! i dont know why it got marked as spam, i'll put your info in the description!
They're all good.
When I was fourteen, my parents bought me for my birthday a Di Mauro guitar which looked the same as this 1950 Boogie Woogie at 6.35 (quarter inch ?). Well, strings were very hard to play, and they destroyed my fingers in a very short time. But I kept this guitar that I loved despite the fact I didn't really succeed to play it. Some thirty years later, the neck of my guitar was bent and twisted. I went to mister Di Mauro shop in Paris and shown him my guitar. He told me that it would be out of cost to restore it, and advised me to throw it away, and buy a japanese. What I did. What I regret to day..............................................
La Busato moyen mode 40's à 5.25 a un son vraiment ultra organique, j'adore.
Lol you are playing the intro to Patru53 videos , very nice !
Busato Moyen Modele 40s:
solo 4:15
rhythm 4:26
The Selmer of course too!
Hey thanks 🙏
what a pity you didn't recorded them in pure acoustic!! :-(
super intéressant !
grosse préférence pour la Selmer et la AJL.
la chance que tu as Martin de bosser sur des guitares comme ça !
For some reason the first four guitars sound best to me.
All those of you who expressed a preference - try this, if you would: replay the video without looking at the screen.
Is your chosen guitar still the same? Or not?
Did you even recognise it?
These are NOT trick questions... I would be sincerely interested to read your comments.
As for me? I had a preference for the Di Mauro 'Boogie-Woogie', probably because I played one many times in the past...
Or so I thought... until I failed to recognise it in the 'blind test'!!
End result?
A little ear training...
A large dose of humility training! :- (
Boogie woogie 😍

what kind of pickup is that? sorry, totally new with the manouche style playing.
Selmer and castellucia tone wow....
I don't get it where are you? new York. Paris. how u get urban hands on all those guitars
The Selmer wins it to my ear....
oui j'ai le bon lien dans la video mais pas dans la description, merci
Hi, nice video !
I've got a Busato and would like to have your friend's opinion on it, where can I write (email) and send some pix to him ?
Hi guys/uploader, I'm a huge django fan looking to buy a gypsy guitar but I can't decide between a catiana swing and a favino. Any recommendations or tips? Or is it just all personal preference when it comes to these guitars?
catania*
Favino is great representation of Gypsy guitar, the Catania is great but doesnt react like a gypsy guitar like a standard design, Catania more like archtop meets Selmer,...Favino is a big sounding Selmer
Goo Rarvey Ok, so a Favino it is. ^^
Nice pieces, by my opinion winner is Selmer 1940. (Do know it's not competition.)
Hey, the others don't sound bad at all.
This microphone dampens the sound, it's a pity with all those great guitars. We do hear some differences but the high frequencies are missing...
all sound good but Selmer 1940 outstanding..because Django i guess..my ear used to his sound & tone......
What is the pick up you are using?
Anastasio 1960 or Carbonell 1960 ? They look like two drops of water, i have a Carbonell ! ? Marc
I have the Busato appearing at 6.01 ~ for sale, location: Sydney Australia
Nice t-shirt! :p
and the tasty kneecaps...
I'm wondering why he 'Godin' that shirt for this video :-))
I have Joseph di Mauro guitar, which o hole, without cutaway
what kind of pickup do you use?
I think it's touching piezo pickup and he show all tone color of each guitar are different . But , if this guy get use a condenser mic in pair with this pickup, sound can be better. That's my opinion .
Wow that bucolo is loud
I think it's an Am6 :)
What tune goes with that tricky intro?
+Harry Kuheim Copy this into the search bar:
Learn "Swing patrus 53" intro with composer Rino van Hooijdonk
It's also "Moten Swing" by Django Reinhardt. One of the versions at least.
That refinish on the Selmer is most unfortunate...
Selmer is Selmer
The only thing I could hear a difference in was the big mouth/small mouth guitars. Please re-do this with two microphones!
Est-ce que tu ne voulais pas plutôt parler de ce Martin Tremblay ?
TremblayLuthier point com
ANASTASIO not sure is it ! For me BUCOLO is the best !
Gypsy guitars have nylon strings???
Renan Ribeiro gut strings
Steel strings
Renan Ribeiro ARgentin Gypsy Strings.
check this for tons of info on vintage gypsy guitars.
gypsyguitarfans
No sé como le hiciste para conseguirlas... O trabajas en una tienda de antigüedades o eres narcotraficante...
You're not playing the patrus theme right, there's no A at the end, it goes to Bb
"These are steel string instruments NOT nylon." Yet, it looks and sounds like you're playing with nylon strings?
Awful sound from pickup, awful positioning. You should make comparison with condenser microphone in front of the guitar.
Nope, steel.
are you accenting on the upstroke? WTF, sounds like a sweed defecting to germany defecting to somalia
Bloody awful review
Wrong Gitar
The worst sounding guitars in the world, they sound like a cross between a banjo and a fish box with strings attached.
What people find in them is beyond me.
They need more work to sound right and certainly better versions of tunes and chords played.
They all sound the same
