My father has driven truck for 40 years. He recently got into an automatic Volvo. He loves that truck. Always going on about how traffic jams are now a breeze lol
I love kentworths
that's only upside on autoshift is it's great in city less stress on shins from clutch
I was just thinking about that. Less stress in traffic
I drove ten speed and thirteen speed trucks and when I got assigned a automatic truck I thought I wouldn't like it but did pretty good on hills and way better in city driving it's like driving a big pickup
I've driven a 13 speed for 10 years. I now drive an automatic 10 speed (wish it was 13 auto). I'm in love with it. Automatic transmissions for trucks has come a long way.
I love the old school box front end. It makes the truck look like a freight train coming.
They're called "classic" look.
I saw a guy with a dummy shifter and other drivers were freaking out wen they notice he wasn’t shifting he said on the radio he was ghost shifting 😂😂😂
I can watch this video over and over and over again!!!
On this days with so much traffic ( northeast) an automatic truck it’s a plus!
I like how sophisticted these automated transmissions are getting latley. Their really putting some though into making something well bilt rather then just slapping some quikly putting together gearbox in the name of sales numbers.
For the AT haters out there: The future is always coming. Either you hop on board and embrace it, or go sit in your easy chair and watch everybody else move on with out you.
The Eaton Ultra-Shifts (Automated Shift) have come a long way. They are light years better than they used to be. The Allison's (true automatic) have also become MUCH better. I have customers that haul 180,000 - 200,000lbs. on a 9% grade, nothing holds up except the Allison 4500RDS with an extra cooler. The company only buys the Allison for that application because it is the only one that holds up. Really says something about the durability of the Allison automatic.
I can agree
i've driven in both types and i'll tell you automatic is waaaay easier/practical and safer especially for new drivers because the attention is paid more to the operation of the vehicle in terms of maneuvering instead of dividing the attention span to shifting and maneuvering the trailer around. Sometimes the focus would be given to shifting instead of watching the trailer which could be dangerous and very costly.
Idris z
Not true. 80% of on road accidents in 2017 happened in automatic trucks with about half the drivers having less than a year experience.
They are also not practical unless u are a city/local driver or u cant shift. U can get almost the same gas mileage in a newer model manual trans & automatics HORRIBLE in terms of power output.
Citation?
Idris If u mean how msny citations,, im not sure of the number or percentage. Im pretty sure more citations were given to manual trans trucks though lol,, especially when they did the check points/cash grabs in the north east last year.
@@traawit2as68 I agree 100% and if you know how to drive a manual truck you won't have any problems driving in city, I mean how many years have people been driving in densely populated cities with manual tracker trailers.
Why is it a big deal about a semi being automatic it's about technology now guys as time passes things change im getting cdls and I would love a automated 389 petebilt I prefer the old box style 389 daycab automated im not a fan of the new rounded edge ones but manual or not there is money still to be made
The big deal is control on less than ideal roads. Autos dont know whats under the tire, snow, mudd, gravel, etc. An automatic will get stuck a LOT more often than a manual. Plus towing them becomes a big issue, making it that much more difficult. YOu cant freewheel it on a winch, it must be in drive or reverse, plus other aspects (Im not a tow operator, but those guys can say). Then theres the maintenance aspects. Manuals last much longer for the most part, and are easier to fix by one person. An auto is huge. You cant drop it and service it by yourself.
Transmissions in automated trucks have a manual mode that lets the driver control the shifts.
Bad ass tractor!! I'm sure whoever has it now is enjoying it.
Powerful engine + amazing trans + auto - govern = laid back cruising 😎
“Uhh, I’m not taking that”
“What?! It’s brand spankin’ new!”
“I don’t need that kind of attention”
Lines from the movie Black Dog
Nice looking rig. I would keep his deposit.
The amount of people that feal threatened by an automatic transmission makes me wonder how insecure are truck drivers
Franco Castro they sucked for many years and I would never want one in extremely hilly terrain or running out west in winter. I drive a 2018 I-shift right now. At it’s best in town.
@@JeepCherokeeful im running a 579w/12 spd auto ran thru Colorado/Utah during winter loved it! Having the all the jake and gear shifts on the column made it easy as hell
Aidan Bynum as long as you can easily have full control over the shifts;) my Volvo was buttons on the dash, near the radio!
@@LordHasek I trained in a 13 speed brand new kenworth. You could shift it into manual mode and shift when it was angry getting up the hills. It stayed right with the other manual trucks. I go through Los Angeles traffic with my coffee in one hand and the other driving. No more clutch for me
It used to be all semi trucks were manual and now they even come automatic, 2019 for you
Theres even certain people who have an auto only cdl because they cant drive a manual
@@DeerPlot most company trucks are all auto its hard to find a manual
@@junioralvarado2384 Unless you're looking into pulling heavy equipment. Only turned up 18 speed Eaton fuller's are pulling around haul trucks etc
Just wanted to say thank you for the videos. I've been off the road for a while now and I will probably never buy my own truck but I really appreciate being able to see these trucks. Have a great day sir.
Thank you for viewing!
I can only dream of having that truck
Great video! Nice and quick but at the same time, gave all the info someone would need!
Pick-up trucks have finally caught up with cars in terms of technology and comfort in the last few years. Time for semi trucks to do the same.
Would be slick to see this in all red like you said
Peterbilt dealerships are like a candy store to me.
That truck is way to nice to be an agg hauler
Perfect car hauler.
With those stacks? it wouldn't work.
That’s a beautiful truck I just wish the sleeper was way bigger
I'm so getting one of those when I can afford to, waiting for my authority to be activated and will be working towards getting a truck like that, only thing that sucks is the space in the sleeper it's a tiny
nice truck if I win a lottery id get something like that
Thanks for another presentation. Nice looking rig.
Thank you for your time watching!
@@RockyMountainPeterbilts always.
Great looking Pete.
Well all this hate on automated shifted trans. Is valid to a point.. But my company has full standard, AutoShift, MDrive(Mack) and Allison. The Allison drive like a high HP diesel pickup with a automatic! You plant the pedal when bobtailed and it will throw you back in the seat and start grabbing gears fast! But once you apply a load to the truck it does have like mushy ALL RPM CVT slipping trans feel. But like someone posted on here, if the trucks are used in heavy in town stop and go traffic is great! But open road its kinda of a waist. Some day I wanna try a EatonFuller Top2 trans, it supposed to shift the 2 top gears when needed but it's full standard shift besides that.
Thank you for your input!
I have a honest question. These are some beautiful trucks this Pete the 389 and the W900 and I’m sure I’m not alone but the DEF tank really takes away from the look of the truck. Now I had a 99 that was custom and I pulled I dump so to save the crappy look of a hydraulic tank I had my fuel tank split. Now my question is can you have a fuel tank split for the DEF fuel so it doesn’t take away from the look of the truck
I could not agree more!
Rocky Mountain Peterbilt's is it possible to do that? If so I wonder why nobody has
The tank would have to be lined or coated with plastic or epoxy. Something impervious to the DEF fluid. Stainless steel would work as well but that would cost too much. I am sure it could be done....someone just needs to make the investment!
I would love It if peterbilt did this from the factory! The tank on my 389 looks so out of place and hate the fact that it is bigger than what was on my 337 and yet it holds 20 gallons less. I'll never understand it. The split fuel tank would be awesome and if it was a factory option I bet 95% of sales would include that option.
Tripn88 I cannot believe they haven’t either or at least come up with a hidden tank that sits in between the frame rails like some battery boxes
I’m a manual truck driver an I like auto also both are great
That's one slick truck.
Wow that's one nice nice rig
I drive a tanker. We are supposed to get automatics when our current leases are up. We will see how they handle liquid surge.
Beautiful RIG
those 18 speed autos are are a pain in the ass. my company has a 2017 567 and Ive been having issues with mine since day one. been in the shop 3 times and already had a clutch replaced at 80K miles. When it works, its fine but most of the time its always shifting when you dont want it too and then it hangs in that gear, maxing out the revs for what seems like for ever. Other times you will come to a stop, then start to roll out and go, mean while the truck doesn't know what to do. You can have your foot to the floor and the sucker just sits there and does nothing for sometimes more than 5 seconds. Ill stick to my 13 speed.
Needs paddle shifters is what it sounds like
So, does that autoshift truck come with a tampon dispenser?
Eventually the only Manuals left on the road are going to be owner operators which wont be many. Once the demand dips enough they will stop manufacturing them I bet. They don't care about the little guy they want to cater to the companies buying 50 trucks at once.
Walker Forsyth 🤣🤣🤣💯
Those auto shifts SUCK
one of the few times i like the ultrash*ts err ultrashifts@D James Morgan
Wahahahauahahahaha
How would this truck do in off-road conditions? Hauling crude oil and things get very muddy and slippery at times; not sure about an auto shift trans for that type of environment.
One of my dream semi truck
I'd like to hear how these transmissions are holding up after a few years or a few hundred thousand miles on them.
They are doing as well as any manual.
Perfection
My westernstar 54in sleeper looks a lot bigger. My cabinet are 20in wide with a refrigerator freeze microwave and flat top at that. As for the set up not bad. My star 560 and a allison transmission and 373.
THAT...is definitely RED.
Nice looking rig
Has Eaton made and upgrades or improvements to the Ultrashift since the past few years or so? Remember seeing people complain about them.
There has been HUGE improvements. Much better than before!
@@RockyMountainPeterbilts I haven't seen any recent reviews on the Ultra shift.
Nice truck, wish I had money
Only problem I can think of with this truck (bessides the emissions regs) is the lack of an optional Cat motor. I personally like the older style of semis better, but different strokes for different folks.
2010 was the last year you could get a CAT in an on road truck.
Make a great rock bucket hauler
that split tank is sweet but probably costly
A fridge in a 58 inch?? 😍
It's a 12V floor mounted that's available. It will cool or heat. Removable for easy cleaning. Very nice option.
Nice truck I’d love to lease a stand up sleeper one for other with rear window
Is it still available and what is the tag weight on it? And price?
Joe: Sorry I missed your comment but yes, it is still available. Email me at couchk@rushenterprises.com for more information.
Can those sleeper shock brackets be put on a 388? I have a car hauler and want to remove the shock brackets to give me a few extra inches
I have no idea.
@@RockyMountainPeterbilts I’ll look into thanks. Does make it look clean
Dammn... that's a dope a$$ peterbilt
Very nice truck 🚛
Very nice 🚚
Hello quick question, what’s the difference between the 567 and 579? They’re very similar and haven’t found a video explaining the difference. Thank you
The title is a bit misleading as Allison Transmission does not make an 18-speed. No other company in North America builds an automatic transmission for commercial trucks except Allison. All others are automated manual transmissions.
Agreed. I try to always make the distinction in the videos between "automated shift" and "Automatic".
Nice i love 👍👍👍
You seem like the guy to ask this question: I have seen some full sized semi tractor trailers with single tires all the way around. Both drive axles on the truck, and both axles on the trailer. Not a dually anywhere. The tires are very wide though, like the steer tires on a cement truck. It seems like the trucks I see with them are tankers, mostly fuel tankers. I have heard them called "super singles" Any reason for this? Benefits?
SixStringLove Guy the main reason is that they increase fuel economy.
The main reason is a single wheel and tire weigh less than a set of duals. That's why you see them predominately on fuel haulers. The down side is if you do blow a tire you need to stop and have it replaced/fixed.
Weight is a plus with singles but also a big advantage is having only two sidewalls instead of four which decreases rolling resistance.
don't forget to mention the disadvantages of a super, they suck in the rain and can be deadly in the ice
I know what a semi trailer is but not sure about a "full sized semi tractor trailer".
My arm wouldn't know what to do in an auto, having driven 13's and 18's M/Ts all these years. But, it's time to catch up with the times I suppose! We're still lacking in real basic safety features too that needs to be addressed. That said, I'd sure hate to see the repair bill on one of these big autos if they go kaput, yikes!
It's simply a manual 18 speed with an X/Y shifter attached. Yes, more complicated but not what you would think.
Good lookin truck well make the money manual or not as long as the wheels are turning
Nice truck
the moth faught a good fight
I’m really really digging this truck it’s got me doing some thinking 🤔
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 if I had the money I would get it a new home
What I want to know, is how much fuel milage do you gain by eliminated the external air filters.
Probably not much. Driver input has the most to do with mpg.
Nice looking truck. would like one in 240" wheelbase and air horns on the roof and Why put the CB antenna on the back of the sleeper ??
Antenna on the back is a personal preference thing. Wheelbase is as well. Customer cancelled so we got what we got.
The reason the antenna is on the back of the sleeper, is because there is no where to mount in on the mirrors. But you could always mount duals to the grab handles on the mufflers, you have to be careful how you route the cable.
So question, does the 389 have automatic option too? Or are they all manual
We can do auto's on a 389.
Most trucks going automatic now?
j t hell yeah I’m so glad the Semis have Automatic Transmission nowadays
No fridge, who wouldn't not want that?
We can add the fridge. Not a big deal. Very easy.
I’ll stick with shifting what I learned on and well I just prefer manual shift. New driver yeah automatic seems to fit the way the world is headed. Still nice truck not my color but someone will pick this up and yes I’d have gone with the fridge.
I like having a manual for my fun car but for dailying a massive fucking semi for work there’s no reason to dick with it. I’d just like a normal column shift like my chevy if I drove one.
🔥
What’s the service life / overhaul cost of the auto compared to a real (manual) trans?
Good question. I am not totally sure, however, the main transmission is a manual. It just has an X/Y axis shifter that runs the clutch for you.
I wanna build my own peterbilt 579, where do i start?
There is no website or place to start. Probably the easiest way to proceed is to email me as specific as you can as to what you want. Wheelbase, model, motor, tranny, gear ratio. day cab or sleeper, sleeper size, interior level, nav or no nav, tire size and color. Once I have that I can do an initial build and email it to you. Then you can adjust what I send you and send it back until we get it exactly like you want. My email is: couchk@rushenterprises.com
@@RockyMountainPeterbilts The engine part is easy these days, cause you only have the option of a Cummins.
Please do a video on the purple Peterbilt in the background
I want I want just one
the guy you ordered this for and cancelled out, does he lose any deposits on it?
Yes. But, we do business on a handshake here. When he cancelled I had nothing except the knowledge of not doing business with him again.
@@RockyMountainPeterbilts gotcha. Cause thats a big chunk of change you have to sit on til it sells. Gorgeous truck tho
First time driving a rig. Goes to use windshield wipers...downshifts into reverse🤣
Funny AND True!
😂😂
😂😂😂 that's funny 😂I just hope you did not catch anyone under the truck 😂🙈🙊
Approximately how much is that rig ?
What is the wheel base
? How fast can that truck go ?
Que bellesa
Very nice truck, but the transmission is not an Eaton it’s a paccar paccar transmissions are the only ones to have the column shifter Eaton still uses the dash or floor mounted one. They are two completely different transmissions
No true. It's an Eaton. I don't have the build sheet in front of me right now but it's an Eaton. I'll try to post the part # later.
Let me know because I’ve never seen an Eaton that uses the paccar shifter, if they did start using it wouldn’t surprise me it’s a lot better design
It's an EATON FO22E318B-MXP ULTRASHIFT PLUS.
if a truck has an Eaton does it mean it's an auto or stick?? If it doesn't have it, is it an auto or stick??
It could be either. Eaton makes all kinds of manual transmissions. Both manual and auto. All the autos do not have a stick, all the manuals do.
awesome. than u
man im looking for an 18 speed auto transmision
do they have them in heavy haulers double framed 46k-52k rear?
We can get them. Probably have to order.
@@RockyMountainPeterbilts any idea how much it will cost ? ballpark ?
i run an older cat engine and want to upgrade to automated
my knee is done with clutch lol

Looks like a JFW truck out of Denver
Take my money

Can tractors still be spec'ed with a 15 speed transmission? I don't see these around any more.
They can but they are limited to 1650 torque. Most engines today are 1850 torque so they have kind of fallen off of the radar for most trucks. Today a 9, 10, 13, & 18 are the most popular.
Thank you for your reply, I guess I just can't break free from being ol' school. Over the years, I've driven the 9, 10, 13, and 18 speeds, but the 15 speed continues to be my transmission of choice. Skipping gears, common with the 13 and 18 speeds, only tells me that I never needed those gears to begin with. If I'm forced to choose, I'll drive a workhorse over a showpiece anytime, just my own personal preference. Great videos, thanks again.

email me at couchk@rushenterprises.com for that information.
You have to drive your ass off to pay for all that fancy smancy stuff.
do semis have a backup camera n sensors??
No. not from the factory. But they can be added.
My last company had back up cameras in their trucks. It was on back of the trailer and had a feed in the cab when we backed.
@@ericscheerer4138 was it easier that way??
michael rodriguez I rarely paid attention to it. I never felt the need been driving for 3 years now, but it came in handy in certain spots like trying to blindside around the back of a building or under an awning or if I had to put my lift gate on the short loading dock, things like that.

is this Peterbilt answer to the W990
No. Same cab and similar hood to the T880. So the T880 is the main competitor.
