People always blame poor sadness but its not her fault. Joy was stopping her from doing her job and basically repressing Riley's sadness. When you do that, its going to burst out of you uncontrollably. The movie did a great job portraying that.
you know what’s funny, I didn’t even think about it in that way and now I’m gonna go sob in the corner😭 I did pick up on Joy wanting to be in control but that part went over my head!!
The parent's emotions are sat around the console in a more controlled manner. Riley is a kid and her emotions are still running around figuring her out, that always gets me. I also cried when I realised that the mum's leading emotion was sadness and the dad's is anger. Fear says "we can't make Riley feel anything" which could also mean sadness wasn't making Riley sad but rather, Riley was calling to her because she is sad. We need our emotions to show up so those around us can show up in the ways we need them to 😭
9:49- I like how sadness gets on everybody's nerves, but she can't explain why she has the urge to touch the memories 😂 That's the definition of a suppressed emotion. She knows Riley's supposed to be sad, but Joy's lil controlling ass wants happiness at all times. As a woman who had to "learn to cry" I get sadness so much! 😂😂😂 I literally watched "The Originals Season 4 and Season 5 Finales" to get my allocated tears in for the month. Just to have a lil cry for crying sake
I didn’t think about it that way!! You’re so right! Wow! Joy should’ve chilled and let Sadness thrive because I swear she was plucking my LAST nerve 😂😂 and Aw I totally get it, I myself will listen to music aid my cries if I haven’t in a while. Crying is so healthy I feel!
It's weird that I am rarely able to cry when i'm actually sad, but I can cry when watching sad movies/shows or reading sad books. That's how I get my necessary tears in.
@@ashhole03 Yip! I spent my teens not even crying at funerals, but I've since learned. That's my method lately though. Lol! I have my "cry episodes" of certain shows. I don't watch TV much, but the reactions to The Originals season finales always gets me. Joseph Morgan in his feelings always gets me in mine 🤣
honestly i feel like sadness doesnt want to make riley feel sad but she “instinctively” does it because riley is supposed to be sad at that moment that sadness is touching her thoughts
This is totally one of my fave Pixar movies! As a person who's had to be strong for other people as a kid I totally felt this movie's message and feel they wrote it so well. 💝 Also the sound and animation department went CRAZY in this one
@@wwhn Aaw thanks for replying and saying all that, I didn't expect it. You're really sweet. ❤ Almost got me teary eyed ngl. But yeah, I'm in a good place now, things have got a lot easier ✌🏼
if you look closely joy have sadness (blue hair), fear have anger (red tie), disgust have purple (neck thing), while anger have disgust and joy on his tie if you look really closely, while sadness is all blue
I like how everyone gets mad at sadness, poor sadness she was just doing her job 😂😂😂😂. Of course as a kid you will be sad at the beginning if you have to move and leave your friends behind, and the house you knew all your life, even if later you adjust and make new friends. Happy memories you had in a place you left, will be stay happy but now with a little sadness in them. Is not that the happy memory changes, but you remember it sadly because is part of a past that it changed. Her parents wanted for her to be their happy girl forcing her to suppress sadness. Even Joy with her toxic positivity was forcing sadness to suppress herself when she knew instinctively what she needed to do. Sadness sometimes help us to process emotions, to process losses and that’s what Riley needed from the beginning 😊
It's good that you saw the mom was encouraging Riley to suppress her emotions for the good of the dad. A lot of people don't pick up on this. A child should not be responsible for the emotional well-being of a parent.
Poor Sadness lol, she's just trying to do her job like every other emotion. I get that one would rather be happy all the time and let joy take the wheel, because she makes us feel good. But people also forget how integral sadness is to our ability to properly appreciate the good things in life and how important sad memories are to building our character. Sad things happen and it's okay to feel sad about them. As we grow older, we (ideally) learn how to properly regulate our emotional responses to different situations we encounter in our everyday life and how to express and deal with them in a manner that is healthy rather than simply ignoring and suppressing them. I think this movie does a great job showing the importance of sadness and how there's no such a thing as a 'bad' emotion, but definitely less than ideal actions that might be triggered by them, depending on how well we are able to cope and regulate.
@@wwhnThe second one is so good! It is emotional, though I opted to turn my emotions off so I wouldn't cry during that one because it hit too close to home.
I was a military brat and had to change schools like every 3 years. I was the oldest and it was expected that I would be positive about the moves and not complain or be upset so I could be the example for my brother and sister. And unfortunately I’m one of those people who remember a lot from childhood. So in that end scene where Riley breaks down and cries, telling her parents she wants to go home and she’s sad, it BREAKS me every time. I wish my parents had given me the space to do that.
The emotions don't actually have autonomy. They feel compelled to do things based on how Riley is feeling. That's why sadness couldn't understand why she kept touching things. Also, you notice some of the machinery "glitches" or doesn't always work despite what the emotions want, that's cuz she controlls/affects her emotions not the other way around. They also say it in the movie, they can't MAKE Riley feel anything.
Went to see this in the cinema with my sons and hubby, then 9, 19 and in our late 30s. The only one who didn’t cry was the 9 year old. 😂😂 my ptsd was on full alert and my inner child was crying so hard
"was not expecting to feel as much as I did". I was, haha. Love your authenticity Montreal, I mean, this is the very movie that teaches you that emotions are a real and healthy thing. So be a damn crybaby when you feel like it, haha. All the best friend.

Exactly from m the get go I was team sadness. Joy only wants happy all the time and that's just not how life is

“Not sadness being the new supreme.” Took me tf out 🤣☠️ I was a softie this movie too!
Stealing is one of the most dishonest things she could’ve done 😭 remember, honesty is more than just lying or not!

RIGHT!! And I’m lowkey nervous about the 2nd one because I heard it’s also emotional. 😭😂
