  • This week on the Motorhome Matt Podcast, Keith and Matt dive into the ins and outs of motorhome remapping. They explore whether boosting your motorhome's power, torque, and fuel efficiency through remapping is worth it, comparing the cost-effectiveness of this approach to purchasing a more powerful vehicle directly from the manufacturer.
    Joined by Josh from Avon Auto Clinic, we unpack the remapping process in detail, explaining how an auto electrician can reprogram your motorhome's ECU to enhance performance and fuel economy. The conversation covers the benefits, potential impacts on warranties and insurance, and essential considerations before deciding to remap.
    In the Q&A, Keith and Matt tackle listener questions. Andy from Harrogate is frustrated with recurring knock sensor issues in his Fiat Ducato, causing delays and trip cancellations Phil from Bristol asks for advice on valuing his Citroen Relay campervan. Finally, Matt from Nailsea inquires about local weighbridges.

    Haha. It’s me, your new co-presenter! That was a long question …. Sorry. Just an update to say that our dealer and Autotrail got involved and expedited the part and made sure it was fixed properly. So far all seems well.

    Had a remap done 18 months ago and it’s been brilliant, better acceleration especially in 3rd to 5th and the MPG has improved as I don’t have to push the pedal on hills 👍🏻

    re-mapping cost my father in law another 800 quid a year on insurance when he bought it. so he had it de-mapped back to factory standard. the difference of 1400 quid a year to 600 quid a year.

      I’m not surprised he went back to the original map! I would have considered changing insurance provider too!

    As a seller of fiat Ducato parts there is a big difference in spares on larger HP engines ie larger turbochargers,intercoolers ,clutches and thickness of driveshafts etc.

    I've got a 95 Hymer B584 with a fiat ducato 2.5td engine. Standard it's 116bhp which is a bit low when carrying my life around. To rectify the sluggishness, I adjusted my turbo actuator for 1bar boost & tweaked my diesel pump. I'd guess it's around 150-160bhp now it drives great. It pulls like a train, even up hills

    Would have appreciated if you had discussed the down sides of mapping - where potential mechanical issues following a remap are concerned. The discussion seems to imply that there were none - by not mentioning any, insurance aside.

      Re-mapping will entail a lot of extra wear and tear on your turbo Matt, as it's the only thing that produces the extra power. Suggest you change the oil and filter more often to lessen the load 🤞

      @@tradecarsdirectltd2344 And let's not forget the increased clutch wear. I know from personal experience to the tune of £1500 for new clutch and DMF. There are a number of potential downsides that are rarely mentioned or discussed.

      My 2023 Adria has the 9-Speed Auto which has a map on gear selector which holds the gear's longer. So you got 1/ Eco - Ok for flat motorway. 2/ Norm - Ok normal driving - 3/ Power Good for overtaking or very steep gradient's. Only map out of warranty i.e. 2 year's plus, but unless you really feel you are under powered, leave it as it is 🤷‍♂️

    The down side of remapping many Fiat/Relay/Boxer based vans, is that the increased torque will be above the safe design torque limit of the gearbox
    clutch.

    • @MotorhomeMatt
      @MotorhomeMatt  23 дні тому

      Is that still the case if post remap the vehicle is driven sensibly? If so I may have to hold back in ours!

    • @stephenwright5181
      @stephenwright5181 12 днів тому

      Yes it is still the case on many vans, I speak from experience from our customers many that have been put back to standard. The other thing to remember is that the more powerful vans as standard have updated clutches from new. So always buyer beware

    Does remapping have any implications for the Euro rating of the engine ?

    • @MotorhomeMatt
      @MotorhomeMatt  20 днів тому +1

      Good question. I would have thought the Euro rating was set at the point of build. I’ve not come across anyone being able to change it retrospectively. Not to say it’s not possible! I don’t know.

    The real elephant in the room that no one is discussing is the growing number of dealerships entering administration, within this genre of the leisure industry. Dealerships can’t move stock from 2023, let alone 2024. The 2025 range is only around the corner, that Dealerships are obligated to buy. Dealerships, even with reductions in price are not shifting their 2023/2024 stock, which leads to cash flow issues. This leads to Dealerships entering administration. Administration means stock legally has to go back to Manufacture of origin. Manufacturers are already too far down the material ordering process line to properly adjust production numbers for 2025. Now unsold stock from administration is being returned. A perfect storm where supply and demand is evidencing a real feeling of market reduction in this leisure genre. Some will point blame towards the Pandemic, others to rising costs of raw materials. Others will claim an overpriced leisure industry, that set prices for short term gain. Prices have arguably now become so unaffordable, from Camp Sites, to Vans and the accessories, that something had to give. A perfect storm of a number of factors. Add the newbies who joined this leisure industry during restricted travel years who are now abandoning an overpriced UK leisure genre for a cheaper overseas traditional leisure genre, means the whole tourism and van life leisure market is going through a very real readjustment. Some would argue it is much needed to get the correct clientele who have always been avid fans of this leisure genre back to front and centre of this leisure genre. A podcast actually giving honest reality (Broadlane Dealership, just 1 example) and opinion for customers, is well overdue Matt, as the silence from the industry experts is sadly so self evident.

    • @MotorhomeMatt
      @MotorhomeMatt  16 днів тому

      I’ve been quite vocal on the topic and I trust seen to be honest. We do have a few exciting episodes coming up with a view from behind the scenes. How dealer stocking finance works and what happens to the stock in the event of a collapse. They will be coming later this year. Most people have no idea how this industry is ‘wired’ and just see higher prices as bigger profits for the dealer. Sometimes this is true but not usually and I can explain why. In fact this last 12 months has been incredibly hard for dealers.
      The other huge issue is the standards of service the industry delivers. Aftercare is often criticised. I would love to unpack this some more too as it drives me mad. So stay tuned and thanks for watching.

    Think you would have been better doing this one on the £40 NC500 charge the Scottish council have imposed !
    Rediculous, free car parks and use of their facilities is going to ruin trade for camp sites who depend on traveller's bookings.
    I actually think this will impact on the amount of NC500 user's if that's what they are hoping for, as not everybody trust car parks as a safe park up, especially older people. Will they pay the fee and also book a site pitch 🤷‍♂️ It's going to work out a lot of money overall if you a retired couple !
