the two legs connecting together, theres a connection key underneath.
Also, AoS: Dominion box set is still available and has better value than the starter sets.

GW has become way too reliant on kicking people to their UA-cam channel to teach them how to Paint their stuff. Even in the Extremis book there's a square telling people to check it out. I wonder how that will hold up 20 to 30 years from now.

I totally agree, some of the tutorials are pretty good there, but that isn't the best way for some people to learn and can be quite undiscoverable at times.
I suspect that the people making the decision about instructions and how to ship them are not concerned with how useful this will be in the future and more concerned with the fact this allows them to not have print and ship a physical book, thus lowering costs today.

Still one of the best ways to buy citadel paints, especially if your new.

I have to disagree, due to price bump to 45 CAD.
Standard pots of paint cost 5.40 CAD and Retributor Armour is 7.40 CAD. Agrax and Stirland Mud normally come in larger pots, but to simplify the math I will call it the same price as a standard pot. (Even though adjusting for size they would cost less)
That means buying the paints seperately in one kit 5 * 5.40 + 7.40 = 34.40 CAD. So you have 11.60 for your brush + models left. Which I will admit is a slight discount, but if you are just wanting the paints, you would be better off buying them seperately. If you are looking at both kits, it gets even worse, since there are 3 of the same paints, so you only getting 9 distinct paints for 90 CAD.
The Paint + Tools Set on the other hand, is still quite a good deal at 55 CAD, since it comes with 12 paints + clippers, etc. If you are trying to maximize value per dollar, as I mentioned in the video, I think buying one of the Starter Sets for models, and then the Paint + Tools Set for paints, etc is the way to go, though that is a significant upfront investment at 115 CAD minimum.

@@SleepyWhatsIt Maybe a good kit for beginners, but far from great.

Thanks very much for this video. The opinion doesn't surprise me - when I saw the reveals for the Sigmar v3 learn-to-paint sets (I got into the hobby a few months ago with what I think were the v2 Stormcast and Nighthaunt boxes), my first thought was, "They lowered the number of miniatures." My v2 boxes had 3 and 4 miniatures respectively, and they also had unique bases, which looked incredible on the $15 boxes of extra Sequitors and Castigators that I later bought. Two more things I noticed in the past few weeks and when I got a closer look at the v3 boxes today were:
    1) Three of the paints in the v3 boxes repeat themselves (Agrax Earthshade, Stirland Mud, Leadbelcher) as you mentioned toward the end of the video. In my v2 boxes, only two paints do (Rhinox Hide and Reikland Fleshshade).
    2) I store my paints inside the boxes since I haven't bought a regular paint box yet, so it's really handy how the v2 boxes specified not only what paints were included but also what kinds of paints they were so I don't have to open the box or open a web page to remember if a certain paint is a layer, a shade, or a base.
I'd love for GW, if they could justify enough demand, to put out specialized "learn to paint" kits that focus on specific techniques similar to Reaper sets. Want to get better at faces? Here's a kit with a bunch of basic faces with out-of-the-way helmets and no masks. Want to get better at color blending? Here's a kit for that. Or at the very least I wouldn't mind paint kits similar to the "start collecting" boxes since I think the Citadel Colour app's layout for actually finding miniatures is really poor (unless you use the search bar, but I'd rather be able to search by faction and role, e.g., vehicles, headquarters, and basic troops), and that's if a given miniature is even listed at all. I really loved the "paint this color, then this color" guides that the v2 Sigmar boxes had, as they also demonstrated some techniques that a newcomer might not know to distinguish among (do you paint everything in one base color and then paint specific areas in layers, do you paint each part individually, or do you paint everything in sub-assemblies before you even put the models together). One big thing I loved about the standalone "easy to build but does not come with paint" kits is that they came with instruction manuals that explained a number of quirks I had about the Learn-To-Paint boxes. I had a bunch of extra pieces in the Sequitors and Glaivewraith Stalkers boxes that I didn't know what to do with because I didn't realize that certain miniatures can have their faces or their weapons switched out for helmets or other pieces of equipment.
I've already settled on the Paints+Tools set plus Warrior since several of the paints don't seem to even be present in the Stormcast or Orruk sets (and incidentally I like the low cost and small size of the Warrior set since you could more easily demonstrate it to friends or a partner). I noticed that the main model pictures on the v3 box arts look like they've had a healthy amount of Nuln Oil applied, which I don't expect newcomers to be familiar with (and some newcomers might balk at paying $7-$8 USD for it). The pictures of what the actual models reasonably look like with just the paints in the box are technically shown, but they're smaller and on the back, which I think almost counts as misleading advertising.

Your welcome, I am glad you liked the video. I should get you write my scripts :-)
GW used to, as in a few years ago, have a sets of paints sets that that were like the Base Paint Set, the Layer Paint Set, etc. that I thought were a much better way to organize things. Since you would get a broad palette of paints that could be used in the same way, and were kinda natural way to build up your collection as you developed your skills. Admittedly I wasn't painting/using Citadel paints around that time, so I cannot fully attest to their quality. May be there was some obvious problem that led to their discontinuation.
I suspect price sensitivity in consumers is why they moved away from this model. Since with 10 paints and a real brush, they would probably be now something like 50 CAD with no models.
I like the idea of having a Start Painting set for each Start Collecting box, since many people will start out with one army, so don't necessarily need a full palette of colours, but would rather have more paints specific to the faction they are playing.
But this probably all gets eliminated by some Business major that is concerned with SKU proliferation and stock levels, and all of the retail things that I am so glad I don't have touch with a ten foot pole :-)
Even if they are not using Nuln Oil, that is the cleanest application of Stirland Mud I have ever seen, to get that nice black rim, given there are no black paints in these kits...

@@SleepyWhatsIt Thanks so much, this means a lot! Those other paint sets sound like they were a great idea; if I were GW, I probably would have struck a compromise by just having these products orderable from the website and only bothering to send them to stores that specifically asked for X quantity of Y product (preferably with at least a small purchase deposit secured since I can understand that GW would have to design like 30 Start Painting sets). Or at the least have an option to order a set of paints at a steep discount if you're also buying their Start Collecting box or their basic troops (Battle Sister Squad, Namarti Thralls, etc.). I'm wanting to start Sigmar proper with Idoneth Deepkin because I think their models are beautiful, but in the long run I'd love to get better at color blending before I tried painting something like the giant water spout on the enormous Eidolon of Mathlann or the bodies on the eels.
I can definitely understand the business side of it as well since I've done some minor studies about marketing in data arrangement in both my academic and professional life - one potential hiccup that stuck out to me is, for many factions, which sub-faction would Games Workshop do the Start Painting set for? For Space Marines they could probably easily justify Ultramarines and possibly Blood Angels or Space Wolves, but for other factions like Sisters of Battle, where the Order of the Bloody Rose seems more popular than the Order of Our Martyred Lady (whose color scheme I see more often in marketing, such as the McFarlane action figures you might find at Target), or the Idoneth Deepkin, where the Dhom-Hain enclave seems more popular than the Ionrach, I'd be wondering, "Do we want to emphasize the factions that people most popularly actually *play* ?" I do love the Thousand Sons' color scheme, but I do wonder if its complexity could potentially be off-putting for a new-painter set even if it does have a Start Collecting box.

I agree the better choice would be the Age of Sigmar: Paints + Tools Set. Only thing missing is primer. It is cheaper and you get all the basic paints you need,

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  2 роки тому +1

I wish GW hadn't discontinued their brush on primer, so they could include some of that, since a whole can of something like Chaos Black would noticeably inflate the price beyond being beginner friendly.

@@SleepyWhatsIt I don’t mind I needed the orruk flesh for dominion, another brown can’t hurt, Agrax is always good as well as leadbelcher, I’ll find a use for the mud sometime, and GW reds are great. My store didn’t have an orruk flesh so I was like whatever I’ll just give the models to my sister.

Of the two, I feel the Orruk box is probably a slightly better deal since it has the new paint and the rest of the colors you mentioned. Though I am probably biased from having done reviews of previous kits, thus have far too much of the Stormcast paints already 😅
