What a shame NBC wiped the color videotape of this series but at least we do have the black and white kinescope so it was preserved. Thanks for sharing this. I've never seen them on Hullabaloo before.
I was fortunate to see the Serendipity Singers at Euclid Square Mall in suburban Cleveland in 1978 (I think the year was) and I met one of the ladies in the group. One of the songs I remember from that performance was titled (I think) "Everybody Loves Saturday Night" which, at that time, was the theme to "WCLV Saturday Night" on Cleveland's classical music station.
Thank you for sharing this. it's really something that folk music- and the Serendipities- were popular enough to front a rock show. They were a talented group, and one can only wish that some day this sound will come back...
I mean, I do think I remember the Serendipity Singers performing the song “The Willowy, Billowy Land” on an episode of Hullabaloo from about March 1966, I think I remember them performing other songs such as “The Phoenix Love Theme (Senza Fine)” and possibly-maybe the hit song at the time, “Yesterday” I believe I have the videos saved... somewhere... and if I do find them, I will upload them so people can know more about this amazing group’s performances on TV.
You're right. We did do that song on Hullabaloo and, we did it on a BBC show we shot in the UK while on a European tour. Have a picture of the set somewhere, we did it with a bunch of little kids. Good fun song off our Shel Silverstein album. Amazing you remembered...that was 50+ years ago.
Brooks Hatch Lucky kids... they got to actually see the amazing Serendipities perform their songs in person! And the shel Silverstein album in my opinion, is the best by The Serendipity Singers. So hilarious and fun! Especially your solo on Side 1, Track 7 “The Beanstalk” how you said at the end “Don’t blame me” always makes me laugh, even more than 50 years later. I am a very big fan of The Serendipity Singers, back then, I was always on the hunt for all of their LPs, I try to post them on my channel for people to enjoy... Just posted all of the shel Silverstein album... I will try to post the ‘65 Album “We belong together” next, if I can find my copy of it...
RecordPlayerMusicMann yep, I agree, the Silverstein album is one of my favorites too, I always love it, and I always have a ball listening to the album, the Serendipity Singers were the very best of the best...
the death throngs of Folk Music. A few years later no one wanted to hear this type of music. Still, part of the American music scene. It just got too square once rock got big..
This is the kind of 50 years old music I want to hear not Motown. Who said that no one wanted to hear this kind of music other than the same kind of people who said no one wanted to hear rock but wanted rap instead?
So who was the woman on the Ed Sullivan Show doing, "Every Time I get the Feeling?" She doesn't look like the brunette in this video ? Did they have 3 women over the years doing this part of Lynn Weintraub?
imusfan48 That's somewhat of a painful question to answer. My roommate in college and the guy who led the group, Bryan Sennett, died in 2011. Bob Young, our bass player died around 2008 after a long illness w/cancer. Jon Arbenz died around 2010. My roommate when we were on the road, Tom Tiemann, is a retired lawyer in Austin. Mike Brovsky is still dabbling in business in S. Calif. John Madden is still practicing law in Denver. Lyn is in Dallas and Diane is in Jacksonville. And, I'm retired, living in the PNW.
Brooks Hatch Thank you so much for that 'detailed' answer! I really loved the group and have some CDs and LP's. Didn't mean to be 'glib' or 'flip' with my question. Do you still perform in anyway today? I have a tennis partner that I play tennis with that used to play piano and tour with Glenn Yarbrough. I enjoy his 'show business' stories and truly love the greats of the folk music era. He presently is working with Johnny Mathis. Sad news today about Joni Mitchell, another folk music icon.
TIMROZIERLOCAL513 the name of this exciting tune is “Sing Out!” Written by Bryan Sennett and Brooks Hatch, known as the first track on side two from their debut Philips LP “Serendipity!” from March 1964, I have the studio recording from the album on my channel for anybody to listen. Now, as for this amazing clip, this is from the Hullabaloo TV Show’s episode dated circa November 8, 1965. I am a big fan of the Serendipities, and I remember seeing this on TV when it was initially aired!
Amazing how little music so many people can make!

Some horns to go with the song. I love it any way.
Wow...A Mighty Wind come to life.
They must have been the inspiration-they captured the vapid optimism perfectly
It was either the Beatles or these guys. It was close...

Does anyone know if Lynne Weintraub was still with the Serendipities at this time?
No. She didn't enjoy touring and was the first of them to leave.
So who was the woman on the Ed Sullivan Show doing, "Every Time I get the Feeling?" She doesn't look like the brunette in this video ? Did they have 3 women over the years doing this part of Lynn Weintraub?
Where are they all today?

+Brooks Hatch My dad listened to folk along with rock and roll, I'm 40 and love this sound, what is the title of this tune you all are singing?
