  • Our final group of television shows that we'll look at for our review of the great 1965-1966 television season will be the variety programs. There were many variations including:
    * The Ed Sullivan Show and The Hollywood Palace
    * The Red Skelton Hour, The Andy Williams Show, Perry Como Kraft Music Hall, The Dean Martin Show
    * The King Family Show, The Lawrence Welk Show
    * Jackie Gleason and his American Scene Magazine
and finally two pop music shows that had a variety flair to them:
    Hullabaloo and Shindig!
We'll look at Hullabaloo and Shindig today, and the Dean Martin Show tomorrow, with a glimpse of the Ed Sullivan Show (and many others) on Sunday to wrap up our spring look at the 50th anniversary of the 1965-66 season.
Hullabaloo, on NBC, featured pop and rock music recording acts of the mid 1960's, and was similar in look and sound to the other youth oriented music show that season, Shindig! on ABC.
Hullabaloo ran from January 12, 1965 to April 11, 1966. It featured hosts such as Peter Noone, Frankie Avalon and Trini Lopez and was considered the 'lessor' of the two youth programs.
Shindig!, with host Jimmy O'Neill (for season 1) was considered the superior of the two series, and ran from September 16, 1964 to January 8, 1966. By season two, after Jimmy O'Neil had left the series (he and ABC were battling over booking African American singers), Shindig started booking guest hosts such as Zsa Zsa Gabor, Hedy Lamarr and Boris Karloff. This approach may not have set well with the younger audience, so ratings fell and the show didn't last beyond mid-season/winter 1966.
There was one other youth oriented music show on television around that mid-60s era, called 'Hootenanny', which ran on ABC from April 13, 1963 to March 14, 1964. It had a more folk music and comedian acts vibe compared to the more rock and roll oriented Hullabaloo and Shindig! All three series are available on DVD packages - check out tvshowsondvd.com for more details, or visit Amazon or B&N. Great opportunity to own these classic series of music from the mid 1960s!
By the summer of 1966 (50 years ago now), all three programs were off the air... music and the pop culture of the day was changing rapidly, and the Beatlemania era in music (1964 to the summer of 1966) was in a transformational mode that would completely up end the music world (again) in 1967.
This video clip is presented here on UA-cam for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended. This clip is from a 2013 special on PBS celebrating Hullabaloo and its 50th anniversary television debut.
    Enjoy!

I was the announcer for Hullaballoo when it was on NBC in 1965 and 1966....I was thrilled that TJ Lubinsky asked me to do the voice over for his My Music series Tribute to "Hullaballoo"
    Hope you enjoyed the show....

Thank you so much for watching this video and for writing to us (and the viewers here) with the story of your work on the show.. That is great to hear.. Thank you for sharing your story and your My Music series tribute work as well. We really did enjoy the My Music special, and have watched Hullabaloo on DVD over the years. Love the show.
The show (like Shingdig) had a great energy to it, and was a look at mid-1960s music and teens just prior to the 1967-1969 era when the mood of the nation was changing rapidly, and with it, the boomer generation, music and pop culture as well. Thank you again, best wishes - Television Vanguard staff

Hello Mr. Holiday. Thank you so much for watching and for your comments and history of working on television! And for sharing it with us and the viewers here!
We absolutely feel so lucky and blessed when someone from the industry watches this channel and writes to us as well - THANK YOU !
TJ Lubinsky is a rock-star in our book here at Television Vanguard. His work on PBS specials is legendary! We were watching a My Music special he produced for PBS a while back (maybe a few years ago?) that was about music and artists from the early to mid-1960s. Outstanding special, and the opener that he used for the program was the graphics from a mid-1970s television movie theme/opener. A great idea and was really impressive... we love those old TV-Movie theme song openers from the mid-1960s thru 1970s and into the 1980s.
We're so glad Mr..Lubinsky chose you to work the voice-over for his My Music special on Hullaballoo. TJ knows what works on screen and has great taste in television production.
Thank you again for your fine work on the show (we love watching it)... you are truly a part of the 'Television Vanguard' that this channel is dedicated to remembering and paying tribute.
We hope you'll keep watching... we're focusing on the 1974-75 television season this coming year, with some surprises coming along the way as well.
Best to you, Television Vanguard staff

Hello. We appreciate your honest feedback, and thank you for trying out our channel. We are limited to 15 minute maximum length of our clips, and we try to keep the segments more as 'samples' rather than, for example, four back-to-back-to-back segments of 15 minute clips that might then show a full hour of a program. Hence, it is a combination of our channel being somewhat 'random-memory/blog-like' in nature, and also trying to ensure that all viewers get a sample of what shows were on fifty years ago, as well as knowing many folks are watching these clips on smart phones with smaller screens, and a full fifteen minutes or more watching a given clip may become tedious. All that said, we aim to ensure viewers have a nice experience watching the programming and feel badly when we disappoint our viewers. We do have more segments from this Hullabaloo PBS special, and will make note of this an will try to circle back again at some point and show additional/remainder of the special here on Television Vanguard. We thank you for watching and hope you'll find other programming here enjoyable. - staff of Television Vanguard
