I think it's one of those "this was made to simulate WWII the best way we could" kind of things, because typically for the western front you have German and British planes all over the channel, the home islands, and France/Benelux anyway, so the second that doesn't happen the AI just doesn't really know what to do

Sorry to break your bubble (or parachute so to speak), but at 8:41 ISP shows the super heavies in the support list and it's the only one that doesn't have the airborne capable icon. That does make me wonder what the point of an airborne maintenance support unit would be. Or how they parachute in the trucks required for logi support.

If you go the pope path, you also get a 2 year ahead of time research bonus for super heavies. So you can easily get them by 1941
Rushing through Africa with a holy Super Heavy Tanks army, sounds like fun, until you attrition to death.
From what I could tell this was actually removed. I played through on the new patch and the pope gives an armor bonus and cost reduction to superheavies, but no research bonus anymore. Still a nice bonus but it makes superheavies too late to be super useful.
Not sure if Imperial Russia kept their research bonus or not, they might be the go-to for supers.
The Soviets also get a super heavy tank bonus.

@@frozenfeet4534 It started 2 or 3 years ago when hoi4 players started using 1 heavy or super heavy tank (with as much armour as possible) in their infantry template to give the division alot of Armor for relatively low cost. That strategy is still very effective and banned in most multiplayer games as it exploits the mechanic and would make 0 sense in a rl battle. Now paradox with putting the superheavys tank into a support company slot, is making spacemarines even easier. This just shows that Paradox is 100% out of touch with its community: yes the superheavys were not used much but now they will ruin every multiplayer game.
@@valentinotto88 Every multiplayer game that doesn't ban them for sure, but HOIV was not created for the sole purpose of multiplayer games. If people in their solo playthroughs want space marines, then they should be able to make them regardless as to what the multiplayers say.
@@minuda well now even in Singleplayer you have to deal with space marines, to put a tank into a support company slot, even the ai can and WILL do that.

You do know that every nation except the US preferred cannons (20mm for the British, 30mm for the Germans I think, the Japanese mixed in some MGs) for their planes in history, right? The US was the odd man out for using mostly .50 cal MGs (the Lightning II had a 20mm though).
Aircraft cannons aren't tank cannons, FYI. Look up the GAU-8 Avenger (I think I got the name right) to get an idea of the modern version. They're machine guns (MGs) that fire shells instead of bullets, roughly speaking (I believe the WW2 ones had a significantly lower firing rate than the machine guns).

Though the US did put a 75mm howitzer in the nose of a variant of either the B-25 or B-26, I forget which (the other variant, of course, featured like 14 0.5 caliber MGs), for ship raiding.

@@robertlewis6915 I must admit it's been a little while since I played the game, but I always took the particular cannon that causes the massive drop in agility to be similar to the 75mm used on the Hs 129 B-3. Being mounted directly beneath the aircraft it would cause a nose down and slowing of the already unwieldy beast. There was similar issues with the twin 40mm armed hurricanes.

As someone who makes 21 width units out of pure laziness, I am all for these combat width changes. XD
I only care about my division template if it's symmetrical and nice looking. I don't even read the statistics or care about them. after over 7k hours in game.

The combat width change will only change things in MP, for speed 2 macro were players will keep changing divisions template before attacking specific terrains. (to get the best they can get, at the cost of units experience=0)

Sorta. Those tanks aren't cheap so if you want to spam them to victory you really got to have the industry to make them. Which granted by late game you will most likely have and it could probably be used to help break the late game stalemate that tends to happen. Or make it worse lol. Guess time will tell.

by the time they're available, at least in single player, you could have used those factories on 24 medium 3's + trucks/mech and air support and won 2 years earlier.
Glad to see that despite updating the air research tree they still haven't fixed the annoying thing where every new aircraft template defaults to the shitty biplane icon.

this should make rocket rails kinda useful now, since having an extremely agile cas plane, might make it incredibly survivable? either that or it wont matter ant they'll still just get dumspters by cheap anti air support divisions...

I’m just imagining Stalin’s reaction when the pope turns up with warlord-class titans now.
Fun Fact: The Maus was intended to be used like this. It was to be deployed in small numbers along certain areas of the front in order to decimate enemy frontal defenses so that the Medium Tanks could exploit the breakthrough. So, Paradox making Super Heavy Tanks a support company is actually historically accurate.
Ah yes, the Maus. Great for destroying all those Soviet fortifications in… Berlin.
I also hope they add Tank Support companies. I’d like to add SPG and SPAA support to my infantry divisions without having to increase the combat width unnecessarily. Obviously some balancing would need to be done so it isn’t stupidly OP.

CAS was horrifically inaccurate in WW2, and the Maus actually had enough armor to withstand most airborne weapons.

Most of these are pretty close to multiples of 20 or 21, will prob make more a difference if you have air or supply than the menial change to combat width.

@@alanywalany6460 Not the way it should though. They are used basically like support arty and need to be totally rebalanced. Support AT teams should be deadly but extremely support equipment and supply heavy. We also need support Sniper units.

Tsarist Russia is also a good one to try this with because you get the same -20% to production cost, as well as a reliability boost that these things sorely need, and the Morozov design bureau is much better than Fiat
