- It's time for another motor build and we're headed back into the Mopar world, this time finishing off the teardown of the 1973 400 Big Block Mopar that came in 73ChargerChic's Dodge Charger. From what we could tell after pulling the heads and intake, this seems to be a pretty stock unit and prime for a brand new build!
Many people don't give the love and respect they should to the Mopar B Series engine platform. The 383 Big Block Mopar and the later generation 400 Big Block Mopar have all kinds of potential for upgrades, unfortunately they are usually overshadowed by the 440 RB Series or the legendary Hemi monsters of the era. One of the GOOD parts about that though? You can pick these things up for CHEAP and they make for an excellent stroker platform due to their tall deck!
So here we go, time to tear down this old tire Big Block Chrysler and remove all those smog era guts to make room for a whole new groove. We're going big stroker kit baby! Oh, and you might ask what it's going in? Well... you'll just have to wait to find out!
Huge thanks as always to all our subscribers, followers, fans, and customers who have made our business successful and gotten our channel to where it is today. Special thanks to the SRC / Street Racing Channel / SRC Garage / Old Man's Garage / Junkyard Digs folks for showing such amazing support for us over the past several months. Without all of you we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today. We hope you enjoy this one! - Авто та транспорт
I always keep track of my nuts!! Austin, I loved all the"who does that?" and "stupid" remarks while taking that apart!! Well done, Sir!!
Thanks Billy, it always surprises me the things you run into on projects. Been a while since I did one of these but excited to see how this thing comes together!
My brother worked for FedEx Vehicle Maintenance, he always "loved" them engineers!! Sometimes it's like you have to pull the engine to change the plugs!
I did 1 of those old school rings and bearings thing on an old 300 ford straight 6. It was pretty cheap with no machine shop and I had already had to buy a piston and head. Did it all without pulling motor and just honing the cylinders. I got another 100 k out of it before i sold it and it was still running strong with no smoke. Fun video, ty

I’m old school, I like to “feel” what fasteners are doing. I’m not in a rush. Exception for stuff that screams “impact me!”
Yep as old guys going to stay together I agree with you 100%
nice job Austin
Love your work, because of the variety, and wish we were able to get a alignment with inspection of our Jeep Commander, Your Shop is my
Kind of shop, I really appreciate you
Have a Great Day 👍
God Bless America 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸
Serpentine bolt for the sake of belt

Thanks John you certainly would be hard pressed to find a shop that does a wider variety of work than we do! If you're ever in our area feel free to stop by!
On the pos motor mount bolt / nut ordeal weld the nuts to the motor mount plate whole lot easier to put back on an take off when it's in the car
I have been waiting for this for so long!!!! Thank you for keeping it going!
Sorry it took so long to get to, certainly wasn't intentional! Just been so busy around the shop it's hard to find time to get this done. But we're moving forward now, will try not to keep you all waiting for updates on this 😀
Hey Austin, I got signed up for Power Tour this week for the Platinum pkg. don’t know which pkg you are choosing but signup is approaching quickly. Hope you can talk Bill and Miss Vicki into coming along this year. Should be a great time. See ya there
Like WILD KINGDOM,Not that Austin has tore down the mopar,Rich will face the daunting task of putting it back togther, facing danger and insurmountable odds Rich approaches the big block thats been wounded by Austin lol.
Rocket surgery I'm going to remember that one
I'd like to see how this goes
I'd really like to talk to your barber!!! Lol
He's got openings next week 😉
I would have used a pipe wrench on that coolant fitting.
I have the cvf v belt alternator setup on the 440 in my 86 d150. Very well put together setup
It's missing the windage tray. On big block Mopars it's part of the oil pan gasket.
Lmao! Poor Rich probably has a heart attack when Austin is in the shop working! Messy Mr. Austin, I unfortunately know your pain though!
Richie is in Florida and probably hasn't seen this video yet.... shhhh 😉
I GUESS RICH WONT LET YOU SE HIS HIGH DOLLAR TOOLS.GOTTA DO IT OLD SKOOL
If you're ever going to rev these things up make sure you do the 1/2" oil pickup mod if possible.*
The larger diameter pickups are an off the shelf item but you have to drill and tap the block. Next thing you have to enlarge and nicely radius the passage to the oil pump which is easy as it's really short. It is a straight forward mod. Thing is it is the suction side on these engines that is more the restriction.
*Fitment can become a problem on stroker cranks since the pickup boss is very close to the counterweight but at 500cubes you should be good.
Also, as UTG points out on his channel, if you want to rev them up you need adjustable rockers. For performance they simply don't have enough stock lifter preload for operation over 46-4800rpm. Better valve springs don't help in this situation because the problem is preload related and the best springs in the world can't fix the preload problem.
Team Lucore Always Entertaining Videos Keep Em Coming 😎
Austin great video. Good to see the work. What happened to the girl with the Charger?
👍
Make dew, make dew usually makes doodoo..
and where is the rest of the build?
Are you going to dyno the engine?
Once it's done absolutely!
Update??
Krylon Kenny would have masked off all of the parts he didn't paint......
I'm sure it's a remanufactured motor. Definitely not a factory piece.
How is that headgasket ever going to seal anything? Some wonderanium compound alloy? The piston head is that far in the hole, bcz if it comes any closer to the edge, the gasket fails, or the valve reliefs blow through piston rings, or both. Seems like the whole engine was created to meet the demand of "Big Engine", without any actual intention to make it efficient, powerful, or anything like that. Just to consume copious amounts of fuel. "Reliable"? With those fuel consumption/displacement/output power numbers, anything is reliable.
I've been a loyal viewer but I'm not sure about the haircut
Oh just you wait another couple weeks 😉 Viking incoming!
why bother to send it to a builder when you easily can do it yourself just follow propper engine specs i did with a528 kit 😊
they r nothing to do with harmonics or balanceing anything they r crankshaft vibration dampeners
your last build on the 400 was a waste of time and hp
