Gravograph Pantograph IM3: Part 1 Refurbishing

  • I have coveted one of these machines for a few years. Why? Because I am shocking artist yet I would love to engrave some of the things I make. These were primarily designed for sign writers and commercial engravers going back, I believe to the middle of the last century. However the mechanical principle of the pantograph means that hopefully it can be used for more creative purposes.
The manual models have been superseded by CNC and laser engraving machines however these are still available. The modern ones cost well over £1,000.
One of the only differences I can see is that mine has a max motor speed of 3600rpm and the new ones seem to go to 18,000 which quite a big jump. I got this one for £130 at auction. As you can tell it needs some love and attention so I decided to make this video in 2 parts.
Part one: The refurb of the machine
Part two: Learning to use it.

Nick, just got one of these and did the deep cleaning also - a problem is that the clamp/vise rotates on its axis without a lock - I see zero on the right at 3 o'clock but there is no way for me to tighten a screw or clamp to keep it there - what is missing ? - help . . . .

The Gravograph IM3 is a current model.
Although I have CNC the manual pantograph can be used for a lot of things which CNC cannot do or which are complex to achieve.

Hello Nick, very nice video. Looking forward to the second one. Do you know if a pantograph of this size could be used to make inlays in metal? I am talking about 2 mm depth. I am looking for a way to achieve that but I don't know if something like that one will suffice or if I need a big machine

Hello Panos, I will be trying this when I film Part 2. Brass, Aluminium and Steel. The manual implies it can only etch on steel not engrave so I am guessing it will depend on what you achieve.

I am so sorry, but I have not used it on glass. Your best bet would be to email the manufacturers. Sorry I can't be of more help
