STUCK in the yard with LEAKS below the waterline [EP 86] | Sailing Millennial Falcon

- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- In this episode, we set about finishing up our boat work in Spice Island Marina Boat Yard. Adam wraps up the installation of the Bruntons H5 Autoprop and does a thorough test to make sure that the new propeller is fitted well. Meanwhile, Khiara gives the hull a final coat of black making Millie look like a new lady!
Our last job on the list before getting back in the water was a quick grease of the seacocks below the waterline and then we should have been ready to splash... except that would have been too easy!
One troublesome seacock put a spanner in the works as we noticed that both the inside and the outside of the seacock were turning in the hole... an obvious sign that the fitting was loose and if we had of gone back in the water, seawater would leak straight into our boat!
So out the seacock came and our splash date came and went... we were stuck in the yard with a hole in our boat... again! We spent the next few days educating ourselves about the best seacock to replace it with and how to fit it and finally, fitting it and hoping and praying that it wouldn't leak when we finally splashed!
A few days later, the yard asked if we wanted to splash that very day... in fact with just an hour's notice! One frantic hour later, the Millennial Falcon was being hoisted into slings as we watched nervously, hoping that she would firstly move, after having installed the new propeller, and secondly, that she wouldn't have any leaks after having installed the new seacock. Just 9 days of being in the boatyard and we were back in the water...a record for us despite our brief delay.
After doing a few checks and ensuring we didn't have any new leaks, we headed out to anchor to get ready to... sit and wait!

What a Masterpiece!? All episodes are so soothing, educating and ridiculously exiting. And so laughable.
Positive all the way. A cool hurray
❤️👍❤️
Congratulations on a job well done 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Time to relax a little. Take care.
Prussian blues little brother, magic marker!
Just in case you forget your wife is a keeper, good luck to you both.
For our previous boat, we went back and forth between black and red antifouling in alternate seasons, so it was obvious if we'd missed any spots. The black looks nice!
No blue....use that magic marker in a pinch. Future reference as I am late to the party and catching up on videos.
Good job guys
maybe could have used the marker pen to colour the complete shaft, another great and very interesting vid guys.
Hey guys next time you bed a thru hull on a solid glass hulled boat its good practice to recess said thruhulls so the hull skin is flush with your fittings , guessing your hull is 20mm+ solid glass so a rebate of 4-5mm is not a prob .. oh and those reinforced fittings meet commercial survey requirements here in australia, so all good there
To Miss infectious and her great guy boyfriend,, Marelon fiberglass reinforced seacock....Really strong. Really good...Cycle it of course =work it...every so often For me up north twice a year back and forth & back and forth... I Have marelon mid ship cleats as well (outside)...In a huge storm..gusts to 70 ..one of the bolts in the seacock broke right OFF= but the cleat was completely fine and the line was held by the other bolt... 15 yrs old at that time..they are dark gray now and you can see solid fiberglass running thru the cleat...Keep on Rockin G.T. S/V Silver Fantasy Beautiful Friday Harbor Wa.
Loved this episode, Wow Khiara can backup Adam's patchwork, like a Sheetrock Rockstar What a Team ! You both are Keepers but I'm partial to Khiara she's cuter Sorry Adam haha
The valved looked like one of Forespar's Marelon products. Much better than bronze. 100% Marelon is the way to go - strong, doesn't corrode, immune to electrolysis. Yeah, I only started watching your channel recently and I'm trying to catch up.
I appreciate the love for each other that you guys show. All the best!,
Very cool episode. All the drama to take us away from the local drama of the day. Well done mates!!
Years ago we used white chalk to check prop shaft fit.
My tip for testing seacocks after you refit them ... it is REALLY hard to be sure the seal is good and easy to get leaks .. especially on the joint between the valve and the skin fitting ... so, after you have refitted it, turn the seacock closed, then use a sink plunger on the outside of the hull .. use some grease on the lip of the sink plunger to get a good seal, press it over the fittign and see how long the suction lasts .. on a good one, it lasts at least 30 minutes to an hour ... if it drops off in a few minutes, you know it has a leak.
That’s a great idea! Good thing we have 8 more seacock that we can do that to when we have to change them out! 😊
Alt to Prussian blue.... Sharpie the shaft taper all over. Rotate the prop as you fit it. Remove a observe.
Nice video
other fitment checks you can use, smoke it with a sooty flame, or use that sharpie marker and paint the whole shaft. (machinist)
Finally ! Back where Milly belongs. Well done to all of you working so hard..So happy you didn’t sink 😂😂😂
Good catch on that bad sea cock..... That could have been no bueno under sail! Stay safe you guys!!!!
Use a sharpie to mark the shaft and gently spin the propeller on the shaft and you can do the same thing.
Great repair team, you guys have a good support system in each other, a Sheila that likes to help repair the house Priceless.
Always enjoy each of your sailboat ⛵️ videos and when out sailing. Even while in boatyard working on your sailboat ⛵️! 😀⛵️😘 Mike
My boat’s stuck in the yard. Not even allowed to drive to the yard to work on it, so it’s a real tonic to see you guys afloat!
Nice one guys. Looking forward to more adventures!
Glad to see you back in the water. You really slammed through all the jobs in good time. Glad you spotted the dodgy seal on the through hull fitting. looking forward to the next video. Stay safe stay well. Fair winds & regards from the UK
You kept the tension going there. I was a nervous "Wreck" by the end of that vid. Khiaras' pretty smile helped though. Loved the moment when your eyes met in the locker 💕
Yeah your back in the water, stay safe. Look forward each week for your next vid.
Well done and congratulations on all the hard and advanced work!
Yay! It's a good day when the Millennial Falcon releases a new viddy.
"Yay! We're not sinking!" :). Thanks for sharing
Yey! We're not sinking! Love it...
That's a whole lot of caulking. It should keep you afloat for a long time. Good explanation on the prop Adam. A little detail never hurt anyone. Keep smiling and sail on.
Great job. Your boat just keeps getting better and better every day. It would be interesting to have you a video on the current state of your boat / projects and future plans (i.e Maintenance and upgrades, etc).
Seacocks be damned! Launch stations!!! Awesome, a few less worries! 👏👏👏
excellent to watch during this unique time........lifts the heart
Love the videos! Love the boat! Yall are awesome!
"we are not sinking" thats always a good state to be in!!!!
Brilliant episode. Filled with drama, tech stuff and fun fun fun. Been there, done that with all those issues, but not usually all at once and with a “lockdown” pending! You guys rock .. 👍🏼🎉💥💯🤛🏽
Sharpie works.... also known as Dyechem Blue. Good job mate.
Yay! Stay safe friends. ⛵️🌴🌊
Well done for getting that sorted so quickly! We would have been in a right panic!
🙏🏻...
You guys are a delight to "know" on here. The way you show love. support. patience and respect for one another is refreshing to see and can only mean you succeed at life and sailing. It does not matter if what you do works is who you are is that is important. Continue building love. joy and peace and your boat will be the best Keep up the good work
Thank you 🙂 those are such lovely and thoughtful words and I can only hope that we live up to them! 🙏
No need for prussian blue...the Sharpie would have worked just as well. Color the taper, fit the prop, give it a few spins, check fit.
Glad your sailboat back in water! Mike from Missouri
Keith Fenner Turn right Machine uses magic marker to check fit between shafts and props.
MADs would be proud of our patch job!
thank you for continuing to put out great content love you guys
Adam you remind me so much of myself when I was younger, also i would have wiped that excess 290 off the outside before it had set!
Love the quality of the camera you used for the shaft work!
Great!! Back in the water. Great job on the boat. Enjoy and cheers from Belgium.
Thanks for watching! Cheers!
you could have used the black marker to see where the prop touches, just like prussian blue
Good job guys. Loving the techy stuff.
Adam, I can personally recommend the Tru Design thru hulls& seacocks, they're glass reinforced poly & pressure rated, you can order them online and their made in N.Z (Kiwi Bro!) I have done 6 below waterline in my S& S 30! Food for thought, no corrosion problems & bloody important fittings. Cheers 😎
Good job guys always nice to see your videos pop up stay safe.looking forward to the ride along.and on a side note take care of that boat as you might be on it for a long long time unless they come out with a vaccine for this virus I don't think it is going away. from Missouri USA
You folks are awesome... my wife and I really enjoy watching... our Gulfstar 41 Ketch will be coming out of her long sleep on June 30 (when we retire from trucking).... we hope to run into you out there!
Thanks for watching guys! - we look forward to sharing an anchorage with you some day soon! 🙏
Magic marker in lue of Prussian blue , sharpie. Or any oil based artist paint. Thinned with a little turpentine.
Love yous. Stay safe out there.
You can use your marker pen instead of Prussian Blue - mark the shaft with the pen, and spin prop on shaft, look where pen is worn off !
As always I enjoy your video content, attitude and ability to laugh your way though all problems. I have noticed a small problem in the last few episodes. I get a white/pixellated bad frame every so often throughout the videos. Don't know of you are aware but may be worth looking into.
the dimple has no thread on it so it is extraneous to your cause no matter what prop you put on. I would drill a centering counter sink in the center of the shaft end to position and hold the puller shaft.
Khiara
Your smile makes you look so beautiful
Let your words and language do the same
high spot blue sub with ink from a pen
Microballons do not give any strength; they are a filler. Milled glass gives you strength in your resin. Cabosil is a thickener.
"You're a doughnut!" 😄
Next time just use the black texta. Works just as well
I imagine most shops that do machining would have the blue or like others have said, cut a sharpie open and use it's ink to cover the shaft.
I giggled when Kiara said "inside job."
(Yeah, I'm an American. ) lol
💖🌈🍷⛵️ Another fantastic episode ⛵️💖🍷🍷🍷🍷🇦🇺🌹
You can use a sharpie instead of blue.
stimpsonjcat67 I was just about to say the same thing!
@@johnmillward8326 Same here, I do it when I'm using my mill.
Took the words out of my mouth.
Generally known as Dykem Blue. Every metal worker has some. The same dye is in sharpies. If you are really in a pinch use lipstick.
i was going to say the same thing. use them with my lathe.
I've used magic marker instead of Prussian Blue before and it seemed to work alright for future reference. Great video thank you!
Another brilliant suggestion! Thanks mate! I’ll add that to lipstick.
This reminds me of the time my good friends and I replaced the engine raw water seacock /through -hull while in my marina slip..... needless to say I had a "few drinks" after it's success!
Keep the videos coming ❤️
Thanks for watching! - hope you are doing well upstream :)
Don't forget, you can use marker pen instead of prussian blue ... its not perfect, but it works well enough in a pinch.
Thanks, that’s a good tip. Wish I’d thought of that at the time!
Actually, (although not sure what your total haul outa there time was) that seemed like a short time on the hard ? Congrats ? Its pretty much been universally better to be in the water with Covid, except for those in Fiji with Typhoon Harold, possibly of some problems for those folks. Even when they were on the hard , a direct class five hit could do them in, like maria did. I like the way your notification bell dinged at the end, your the only channel which has figured that sound effect out , at least that I watch . Good job guys.
Stay safe , Peace.
Whatever it takes
Sorry to hear.stay safe
All's well that ends well!
Magic, Millie is back in the water with improvements ( a properly working propeller) enjoy...
😊❤️👍
Cool😎
Awesome stuff :-) I Love Robert Perry designs, especially the Galley. I'm going to go and see if I can find a Walk-through, in your videos :-)
We have a boat tour somewhere in our bonus playlists 😄 best thing about Tayana 42 is that I’ve never seen the same interiors, they’re all different!
@@SailingMillennialFalcon Yes, of course... Many boats have variations. I'm shopping for a new boat and am looking at several. Like you, I have not found the right configuration for Me. I'm pretty old, so I'm looking for something with an ample Aft Cabin, similar to yours, as well as a gally that's not going to throw me across the boat when heeled over... lol There are too many requirements to bother you with... I'll just keep watching and enjying the adventure :-)
Just so you know. A substitute for Prussian Blue is women's lipstick. Paint it on and see where the fit varies.
Thats Brilliant! Damn i needed that suggestion 2 weeks ago :) Thanks mate.
@@SailingMillennialFalcon Glad to assist Mate. Enjoy the heck out of y'all's journey here in the central valley of Ca. in the states. Would enjoy a beer with you both in King's Cross someday if I could.
What ever blue it is, it’s not Prussian, more like ultra marine. However, a black texta will work just as well.
With that antifoul i will never get it. The surface is anything else than smooth so the barnicles will stuck there very soon. I always wonder why it aint done like the surface above the waterline?
So many missed innuendos! :)
You guys need a house keeper upgrade !!
Yay!!
Ditto the Sharpie, does the same thing.
Did he just say "lather up the shaft"? 😝
Is that TruDesign that you just installed? We have those earmarked for our full seacock refit over the winter. How has it held up over the intervening months?
Worse places to be in quarantine. I've applied 27L of fence paint this weekend. I'd rather be antifouling but that will have to wait.
No thruhulls below the waterline.
Woop! New SMF video day. Great to see all the work! I am however having issues with video blips again @1:53 after the fade there is an artifact clip. I tried in Chrome on 2 different computers, as well as Microsoft Edge. This also occurs during the interview with Adam talking about Prussian Blue. Anyone else?
Hey Brian! thanks for bringing that to our attention! you have a keen eye, my friend! - The original MP4 (that we uploaded) doesn't have that issue. I'm thinking what it could be is the uploading from our Cellphone (which we do to save battery power). Its the only thing that has changed recently. We will upload with the PC next time around and see if that resolves the issue.
@@SailingMillennialFalcon aw, I just like watching the videos so much and wanted to help in some way in case there was an actual issue. Anyhoo, stay safe and thank you so much for sharing what you are going through (both good & bad). Best sailing channel out there! - B
A substitute to check the two surfaces you can use a magic mark on the shaft, let the marker dry, use valve gridding compound , remove the prop and compound. You can then get a good idea of how the prop is mated to the shaft by how much maker is left on the shaft.
Awesome tip mate, cheers!
Bad thing about this lock down, is I'm window shopping for sail boats everyday. I really shouldn't watch these videos, that get me amped up.
🍀❤️👍
Yeah👍👍
Wooooohooooo
