We should understand that Ian Anderson did not want to convert anyone or has anything against believing in god, no. He just wanted to try to open the eyes of some people that not everything that was made by people in the name of Jesus or god is and will be right, but only a justification for striving for one's own power or greed. He said something similar in an interview when he was asked about the song `My God`. Thanks for sharing this song and best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
He is saying Jesus is being misused. He is also talking about man's inhumanity and how it is everywhere from the Cities to Moon. Tull has a lot of deep and meaningful lyrics.
Ian Anderson. Amazing guy. Self taught flute and Classical Guitar. An Agnostic-Gnostic-Protestant. Beautiful. Right. Jesus has to save himself from the Institutions surrounding him. From Calvary to today...Cheers 🍄🌲🍄✨💥🌈
Saw him in person 6 times!!!! Let Jesus save himself from the gory glory seekers who use him name in death!!! One sentence!!!! IAN ANDERSON IS MASTERFUL!!!!!
Aqualung is not a concept album but..... its definitely got a thread of religious sarcasm running through it. i would recomend listening to the whole thing. that and Heavy Horses are my 2 fave albums by him
Yeah, Ian wasn't exactly into Christianity, especially the Church of England. But he was definitely into spirituality IMO. One line from the song "Inside" (from the album Benefit, which was their 3rd album and the one right before Aqualung) that comes to mind illustrates this. He sings, "Can you cook, can you sew? Well, I don't want to know. That is not what you need on the inside, to make the time go." As an aside, I saw them at Madison Square Garden (I think in 1973). Their live show and sound was flawless. One of the highlights was when they got to the section in Passion Play entitled "The Hare who Lost his Spectacles." They actually had a movie going at that point with people dressed in animal costumes. If you haven't heard the album you might want to listen to it first and then view this video. The smoke in the Garden was thick that night!!!!!!! ua-cam.com/video/H_toN5VfWBo/v-deo.html
We actually had a band who played this song well at high school dances. Surprisingly a favorite dance tune! Way up in our tiny town on the NW US-Candian border!
When I was thirteen yrs old, 53 years ago, I was in a bar in Rochester NY and I heard Lou Gramm of Foreigner sing this song. He was in a band called Black Sheep before he made it big in Foreigner. It was amazing. The name of the bar was the Brass Rail on Dewey Ave.
Their first record (45) was a misprint of sorts. The record company got their name wrong . the dude that printed the labels thought their name was Jethro Toe. I'm not sure how many got out , not many , but are worth a lot . Last time i heard it's value was 4000 bucks and that was years ago.
Definitely one of their edgier tunes, and another reason why Aqualung is the godly album it is. You should definitely check out the mix done by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. His album mixes are PHENOMENAL! As far as Jethro Tull songs, I don’t think you’ve reacted to A New Day Yesterday or Sossity, You’re A Woman. There’s probably more I can think of, but those are the first that come to mind. Great reaction, bud! 😊
Classic song from a classic album by a classic band. Definitely an album that should be in a music connoisseur's collection Imo. I think it's great you're exploring the deep cuts. So much great music gets overlooked when people just listen to the most popular song from an album or artist.
I think Ian Anderson was pushing a good point across - as in Jesus should save himself from money and glory seeking hypocrites, otherwise known as or ministers, pastors, evangelists and priests, you know; supposed "men of God."
So many evil things have been committed in the name of God/Jesus like the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the genocide of the Native Americans, slavery, and countless other wars and atrocities. I always thought Ian was referring to that. I'd love to see you react to Billy Strings - Away From the Mire. It's kinda like old time bluegrass meets Pink Floyd. Sounds weird, I know, but it totally works and it is fire🔥
from the lyrics... "He killed an Indian or....three..." "then he made his name in Hollywood---- to set the whyte man free..." Absolutely brilliant lyrics.
It was the crusades who stopped the advancement of Muslim into western Europe during the battle of Tours near Poitiers, France. Without this you likely would have been a woman living here in a Muslim culture by now. Christianity had nothing to do with the killing of Native Americans, nor slavery (the Society of Friends, or Quakers. The very first one, The Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, had formed in 1774 and helped to pass Pennsylvania's Gradual Abolition Act of 1780, the first anti-slavery legislation in the United States.) What are the other COUNTLESS wars that Christianity caused? Instead of living in the past, why don't you here list every single Christian organization that is now today helping the poor, etc. - go ahead.. list them..
I’ve had to be away a couple weeks but sure enjoyed this one today! In the context of the album I think it is a little easier to understand Hymn 43. I am happy to see your subscriber base growing and that you are still here doing your thing, Pope. Somewhere I heard you mention traveling to Greece. So nice that you got that opportunity. Thank you for what you are doing with your channel.
My interpretation of this song is that Anderson is pointing at the disconnect between the actual teachings of Christ, and the actions of those who claimed to be followers of his teachings. The "gory glory seekers who used his name in death"----- think of all the bloodshed that was committed by the Christians during The Crusades. Or the burning of the Library of Alexandria, ( and skinning alive the librarian, Hypatia ) which contained all the accumulated knowledge of human history at that point in time. ( what better way to ensure that your own 'narrative' gets top billing...) Or the Witch Trials that claimed the lives of targeted women for centuries.. Or the genocide committed against Native Americans.... ( the *unsung* Western hero...he killed an Indian. Or three....) You can hear the sarcasm and irony dripping from Anderson's vocals here.. Anderson shines a spotlight on the hypocrisy of the Church, I don't see this as him bashing Jesus.
Going off on a tangent her and only because I've never seen a reaction to it but may I recommend Song of a Baker by The Small Faces. Love what you are doing here my friend
Hey kid , Dont you think this tune pertains heavily to today? with all the gun toting heroes in L>A, Love seeing you get right into this , your a good kid man keep it up.
@@MadHauler Glad you clarified your words. Your first 2 words had me worried you were dissing my man, Pope. I wish half the "kids" in this world were as inquisitive and intelligent as Mr. Pope is.

Corruption of the church as an institute. Always good storytelling by Ian

Wow. Great choice brother thanx
"Fat Man" from "Stand Up" album is a must hear! 🍟🍕🌭
Love TULL! TY. ☮️❤️ my interpretation of this song is how too many claim to know “Jesus”, but only use church and Jesus to feel superior.
'Aqualung' is the album that keeps on giving for sure.
Lookup "Minstrel of the Dawn" by Gordon Lightfoot. Certain you'll enjoy it.
"My God" off this album is awesome. Totally check out the studio version!
This song, "My God" and "Wind Up" were very influential in my personal study of religious belief. Literally set me free, changed my life.

His Zealot Gene album is magnificent.
oh so good....
Ian Anderson is a very wise man
This song embodies the early Tull. Never get tired of it. Wish Ian's voice could have held up as it was in this aong.

The message is simple he can't save anyone if he doesn't save himself first. From all the b.s.
The one I think I love the most is Skating Away.

It's a condemnation of those who use Jesus/God to promote themselves at the expense of others.
The Father gave us free will, and The Son showed us the way. Too many use the First, while ignoring the Second.
Check out the earlier albums, Benefit and Stand Up

It's an attack on religions that use religion as an excuse to do bad things ... and use His name in death.
I have heard Ian is not a fan of 'Merica...
👍❤🤙
He's talking about the scary people that use his name to harm other people.
IF jesus saves, then he better save himself.

😮Slamming organized religion, not Jesus. This generation of British were very cynical about the Church of England.
