  • The MileIQ App- advertised endlessly on TV- can it really replace those mileage books you keep in the glove box and always forget to write down the mileage in? I found MileIQ- www.mileiq.com worked pretty well and made it easy to classify your drives as business or pleasure. BUT they advertise it as a free app- and it is- until you reach 40 drives for the month. At that point you need to upgrade to the pay version at $6/month. Still not a bad deal for what it does- but I think many people will need to upgrade to the pay version of MileIQ to keep using it.

    Very good review of this app. I was so thankful because I am accepting a teaching position in a neighboring county and will need to keep track of my commute, also my husband is starting a new business and will need to keep track of his mileage too. Now I know it is worth using. Well done.

    Parris, great video!
    Okay, a thought here, since I've been watching Columbo. . . This app can be used to prove if a person was or was not at the scene of a crime.
    Yeah, I know, my brain never stops. LOL!

      um actually the cell phone company tracks your exact location (or at least your phones location) every second of the day if you are suspected of a crime the police can easily get that information. even if your phone doesn't have GPS or it is turned off they can still know where you are by triangulating the signal. good old technology, right? Lol

    Granted, you still have to export it and track it, so maybe it is not such a bad thing. Guess I need to give it a try, huh?

    For the same price you can get Everlance which is a much better mileage tracker (tracks your entire trip, not just start & finish) + expense & revenue tracking.

    So for the personal miles I won’t be charged? Just only for business as long as I notify it as business? I’m new to this stuff about mileage 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️

    I was using this app to log my Uber and Lyft milage. I started to notice that it was not logging all of the miles that I traveled in any given day. I contacted customer suport and found out the big drawback to this app is that it relies on you having the WiFi being on. In my area of Chicago there are some eXfinity WiFi hot spots that have poor to no internet connection. This causes me to miss ride requests and thus loos money. I have un-instaled this app and on the search for a tracking app that will work without WiFi.

    So far I used this to track one trip from Tucson to home, about 140 miles. The app recorded it as 8 separate trips! I stopped for several traffic lights, a food stop, and a couple of stop signs. It even detected a secret trip my phone made all by itself, a half hour after I went to bed! I was out of wifi range almost the entire time, was briefly out of cell range at about 3 points during the drive, and was back in range within 5 minutes. My 40 free trips a month are disappearing fast. Will this work at all if I go out of cell and wifi range like into a canyon 6 miles and back? Does it use only satellite data? I haven't looked at any how-to details of the app, but being able to use it to record trips by more than one car will be important, as I use 3 for business at different times.

    Hey Parris, thanks for your review. You showed that you use 2 booklets to verify your mileage, one for each car you use. Does the app know which vehicle you are using or does it really matter? we use multiple cars for our business and keep separate books (pain in the glutius maximus). how does this app take care of that? thanks for your reply

    • @EpicReviewGuys
      @EpicReviewGuys  8 років тому

      +John Franco The app can't know which car you are in. It just knows you left home. When it reminds you to sort the trips as business/personal each week it makes note of that mileage. But you don't have a record of which car you used.

      I used the app on one phone and carried that particular phone to whatever vehicle I used. It however did NOT record all my miles and was over 5k short of what I did on Uber and Lyft. NOT a good app if you want accuracy for ALL drives.

    I do the same routes every week for the payroll company I work for. Is there a way to add in my route for each day because I know exactly where I need to drive every day for work? I drive close too 40k miles a year in my personal vehicle for work. Would this app benefit me?

    • @EpicReviewGuys
      @EpicReviewGuys  7 років тому

      I don't think you can program a route in to repeat. But that may be a new feature they have added.

    Yeah IRS will pay you now but in the future you will have to pay taxes to drive...depending how many miles you travel per year

      ONLY if autonomous cars take over our lives, which I believe possible in 20-30 years. IF they do, it would be economically foolish to own a car.

    After using this app for a year I found that it recorded FEWER miles that Uber and Lyft for which I was using the app for. I always had the phone with me while doing uber and lyft and it missed more than 5000 miles. While Lyft and Uber reported my miles as 16k MileIQ only report my miles as 11k.
    This actually should be the EXACT OPPOSITE, the mileage I used was much more than the Uber and Lyft mileage. MileIQ is an absolute rip off, dont use it.

  • @EdwardAnton

    Hi. Great review. Big Question: IRS requires odometer readings (begin and end) for each deducted trip. Does the .csv or .pdf report provide the odometer info? If not, it's not much help for those looking for a tax deduction.

    • @EpicReviewGuys
      @EpicReviewGuys  7 років тому

      Since you can use your car for personal trips- and someone else might even take your car out- without your phone with the app on it- it can't keep track of the odometer mileage.

    • @mrblutifultm
      @mrblutifultm 7 років тому

      Edward Anton it gives you an option when you log the trip to add a side note. Such as having to pay for tolls or parking, at that point you could also add in the odometer numbers beginning and end of trip.

    • @alandavis9319
      @alandavis9319 7 років тому

      Not sure you're right about that regarding having odometer readings for each trip. I've always claimed the mileage by the odometer reading when I started and then the reading at the end of the day when I was finished. Subtract the begin and end to get the mileage for the day. That's all I've been told I had to do and no issues thus far.

    How much data does it eat ?

    • @Seattle_Slew
      @Seattle_Slew 6 років тому

      Miniscule. unless you are constantly on the edge of exceeding your meager storage data, its not. problem.IF it is, you need to get a phone with more storage or reduce the data eaten up by other apps. It isn't rocket science.

    $6 bucks a month or $60 a year. That's quite a bit of money taking away from your tax deduction just to record miles.
    Also, this app will keep an ACCURATE log of miles. I'm quite sure most people will pad their mileage just a bit to get a little more of a deduction. So this app will cost you even more money in the end.

      You can record this app as a tax deduction and it also saves you time!

    • @Seattle_Slew
      @Seattle_Slew 6 років тому

      Nonsense! Are you *really* that narrow-minded?
      It's a major pain in the A$$ to have to remember and manually enter the data, trip-after-trip, then calculate the data into useful information then, write it down for my accountant etc., etc. Think about how much time that takes (hours)!. NOT to forget the app is tax deductible itself and does it all automatically, with maybe a few minor adjustments from time to time.
      IF you're unable to recognize the savings in time and it's inherent value, (sorry) but, you're a fool.

    You know most smart phones have this capability built in to it. Open Google Maps, Settings, Your Places and it will show you every place your phone went, the time, the miles, and even the addresses. You can edit the detail, i.e. enter a specific address. I would love an app that does more of it for me but $72/year is too much for me given the phone does it.

    • @Seattle_Slew
      @Seattle_Slew 6 років тому

      Seriously? Your smartphone DOES NOT do everything this app does, nor is as comprehensive with the data as you claim. NOT even close! Does it tell you what were private vs business trips. Does it calculate the IRS write off for each trip and then produce reports itemizing and totalling all the data? That's big negative and there are other things.
      It's a major pain in the A$$ to figure out all those nuances and then calculate the data into useful information then, write it down for my accountant etc., etc. Think about how much time that takes (hours)!. NOT to forget the app is tax deductible itself and does it all automatically, with maybe a few minor adjustments from time to time.
      IF you're unable to recognize the savings in time and it's inherent value, (sorry) but, you're a fool. (Hard to believe people are so cheap-minded, narrow-minded, while thinking themselves a genius)!

      Depends on person honestly. I'd rather save time and have an app record it accurately for me instead of me forgetting to log every drive I do for work. I drive for Lyft and work 3 other jobs, so keeping written logs would be a nightmare. So for someone like me, this would be a worthwhile investment.
