    during repairing a switch mode power supply, how we can verify that the smps controller / pwm controller is switching, we can test the switching of the pwm IC using digital multimeter.

    in this laptop charger repairing / troubleshooting i demonstrated the test process to verify the pwm ic switching. when pwm controller IC starts switching it drives the mosfet and provides switching pulse to drive transformer primary winding
    we can test dc voltage across mosfet drain to source
    we can verify voltage from vcc winding rectifier
    we can check voltage from optocoupler
    in last video number 521 • {521} How to Repair La... i demonstrated Laptop Charger repairing (DEAD) No Power Solution | How to Repair Switch Mode Power Supply SMPS, this laptop Dell laptop charger using UC3842 current mode smps controller ic, it had no power, when power was connected or plugged in, it was not powering ON.
    when i checked the voltage on DC rail on bulk dc capacitor, these were 330VDC but there was no output. then i checked voltage on vcc capacitor there were no voltage. vcc voltage are the most important for function of any ic. so that was the reason that pwm controller ic us3842 was not taking start. (uc3842, uc3843, uc3844, us3845, ka3842,ka3843, ka3844, ka3845 ics have the same pinout in their datasheet). pin number 7 is vcc pin, it must have vcc voltage for 3842 ic, it must have 12 working vcc voltage. these vcc voltage were missing due to the reason that the startup resistor was burnt. it was not providing initial vdd or vcc voltage to the ic. i checked that the original resistor was 180K ohm. for test purpose i connected 310K Ohm. (we can use a higher value resistor, it will cause a slower start)

    Hi sir, you made my day. wonderful explanation and i repaired an SMPS, the switching IC number scraped by the SMPS producer, their intention was not to repair it., so that i could not find the IC number and there is no IC switching , and found that the IC fault not switching and found IC number by your diagrammatic explanation. thanks a lot. almighty may bless you.

I have learned so much from your teaching style and I would encourage you not to change anything the way you explain things.     Thanks for beautiful description. One of my question is can we give 12 v DC from outside to ic vcc pin without connecting to ac 220 v for checking ic. If ic is working it will give reference voltage and out put of gate otherwise not.

    Ek smps mein ek reference voltage toh octocupler ke pas jo transistor hota hai use di jaati hai jisse octocupler work karta hai lekin ic mein jo reference voltage hoti hai wo kya kaam karti hai.

    When smps is working, Difference of voltage on main /bulk capacitor and in mosfet drain and source is it same? (approx 25volts in this video) for all smps circuits?

      it depends on the rcd snubber's efficiency. this difference may be 5V to double value of the capacitor's voltage
      i mean if DC capacitor 300VDC, then the mosfet drain to source may be 305 to 600VDC

      yes there are may calculations for dc capacitor. witching at different duty cycles, and in result the voltage applied to primary and in off period the stress
      in this video i compared the voltage stress in dc voltage range
      we can check it with dc range much safely than the ac range

      1. if any winding have bad soldering joint with mounting pins of bobbin (remove the transformer and re-solder the winding ends with the bobbin pins)
      2. if switching frequency jumps (check the frequency )
      3. sometime the ferrite core bonding becomes loos and produces the gap between outer leg.(in this case disassemble transformer and apply glue to the legs & sims if it is gaped core)
      4. if winding becomes loos (pour varnish)
      5. in some situations it may be unexpected sudden spikes from load (in case of capacitor internal sparking)

    In such Flay Power Supplies, there are 3 simple malfunctions (& the fuse is WORKING! )
    -the failure of the starting resistor along the 7pin 384x circuit
    and the loss of capacitance or the larger ESR of the capacitor on this 7pin (C5 C8 to your circuits),
    well,or a leak breakdown in the zener D2 and the self-supply diode D1 after they are checked / replaced, everything will work.
    IF THIS DID NOT HELP, then all HOT PART or maybe a transformer for replacement -
    repairs can be UNPROFITABLE and more expensive than buying a new product.! But the owner ALWAYS decides to repair or buy a new one

    It means sir 88v across snabber diode + 116 volt across snabber resistor = 204 v dc. Left voltage storage in bulk capacitor to applied ac voltage.

    Hi Haseeb, another great video. I never saw anybody check the DC voltage across the pins of the MOSFET before. That's a high frequency AC signal with the MOSFET turning on and off at high frequency - is that safe to measure that voltage with a cheap multimeter (like the one that I have 🙂) ?

      thanks a lot for your valuable words
      at very high frequency switching mosfet / igbt / transistor is considered as a dc source (similar to a dc generator)
      it is completely safe to test source to drain at dc range
      but it is much dangerous to test the same at ac range (specially when we have a low brand, low quality meter which dosen't have a good frequency response at high frequency, it may damage mosfet or smps controller ic)
      but a cheap multimeter can safely measure this signal at dc range
