As mentioned on your first post referencing the sprocket change, I tried several and settled on 13/45. I top out at 76 Mph but won't spend too much time there. I ride 2 lanes when on road but mostly off road, thus my decision. I'll stay here. So as a result I have slightly used 14, 40 and 42 tooth sprockets.
I've learned never go down on the front sprocket it cause wear on the swing arm always go up on the rear. One tooth drop equals 3 teeth on the rear gets the same result
Hi Derek, just recently found your channel. I've had many dualsports myself but not a KLX of any sort yet. I like what you're doing with your channel. I'm curious where these rides are. I'm in NC near the Uwharrie National Forest, which sucks. I like the places you ride. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Well realistically your giant D606 or Dsport is like going down 2 teeth on rear cuz its larger diameter and knobs. 13/42 seemed way too low on my oem tire, but 13/40 felt perfect for dual sport and trails. So with your rear tire, and my 40t sprocket we are probably at the same circumference/ratio and can agree that it works good for the 300 LOL. Second gear was unstoppable on the trails, could idle uphill and still pull til 30mph.
I ran 13/45 & 13/47 for a season, moved to a 13/49 (chainguide adjustment required) and itsjust tolerable to ride on lesser sized paved roads if u arentgoingto far. So much better on the trails. 1st really climbs well, 2nd is yourslow speed gear, 3&4th become normal use and amazingly 6th has usable power on an open atvtrail. Goesthru the gears real fast nowtoo! I'mgonna try a 12/47 combo if itwill clear the swingarm guard, sso it should be similar to a 13/51 but i wonthave problemsat the chainguide. It will be turning like 8krpm at about 50mph but it should let me climb offroad in 2nd with 1st still in reserve. If ur willing toswapsprockets at the trailhead u can step up like 5teeth comfortably on the old snailcams. Its less work than swapping a50/50 tread out to a knobby is. Sounds silly maybe but aluminumsprockets are light and fit in a backpack. If i was to adv tour on my klx i would for sure carry gearing options.
@@NAdame-js1ce ck a sprocket chart ck the 13. 42. And the 14 50. And see if they are close in ratio the 13 front chain will rub a little isn’t a problem the 50 would be a good option. Klxr stock i think 14 50
You have to be careful with your sprocket gearing changes and don't overdo it. You need to understand where your overall ratios are at because, if you change your sprocket ratios too much you will simply be eliminating a gear. For example; your 1st gear becomes almost useless and your 2nd gear is now essentially the same overall ratio that your 1st gear was before the sprocket changes. Your bike rpm in 6th gear at a given speed will be the same as where you once were in 5th gear and you will always be grabbing for another gear that's not there on the road. The maximum performance you can gain would be if you could split your overall gear ratios and make your 2nd gear rev out like a 1 1/2 gear and your 1st gear would be like a 1/2 gear now.
I am considering something like this. More teeth and more links means longer wear for all the parts. Less frequent, replacement. Also the 14/47 wont rub the swing arm / chain slide.
Hey! I was hoping to find some help! I have a 2018 klx250 and I’m having idle issues I’m pretty sure it’s not an air leak anymore. It will be idling and without touching the bike it sounds like it’s struggling to idle around 1200-1500 but then will randomly surge to a little over 2k rpm’s for a bit and then will go back down and sometimes go down to 1k I’m not sure what it could be, maybe a bad sensor or something? My first bike so I’m a little lost. Thanks!
@@DerekDualSport it will start and be around 3k sometimes before dropping down. It hasn’t surged that high but something is definitely off thanks for responding! I’m so lost haha
No problem! Have you checked your air filter at all, do you know if it has ever been cleaned? Also have you tried adjusting your idle screw at all? There should be a brass colored screw that you can turn with your fingers on the right side of the bike hidden behind the frame.
@@DerekDualSport I removed the air filter knocked off a bit of dirt I have a picture of it but didn’t have anything to do the full cleaning process so used a rag got as much dirt as I could out But I’m under the impression it wasn’t bad enough to be the problem. I also have been messing with the adjustment screw and it has a factory made mark of where the position is and I’ve adjusted up and down and it still can’t seem to idle properly without surging or sounding off. I’m thinking maybe some sort of sensor near or around the throttle body could be dirty or bad but like I said I’m not a mechanic so I’m trying to learn what sensors are what and where I’m coming into it with absolutely zero prior experience haha
Relaxed riding video with invaluable technical knowledge.
New subscriber.. Ride a klr650 and duke790.. looking into a klx300 and found you... liking the content.
Thanks buddy! I just picked up a KLR650 as well. I’m loving it so far.

I prefer 14/44. Try it

I found the front sprocket in the description but I didn't see the rear sprocket. Could you comment and add the link for me?
What size chain for this 13/42 gearing is needed? Thanks😀
My stock chain works for this setup

Bro where is your gear for hwy

Fyi Klx first gear is 3:1 reduction and second gear is 2:1 reduction. So it's not quite possible to do what you (reasonably) suggest
Derek i was thinking a 50 tooth rear for wheelies. is that to low?
You could definitely slap a 50 tooth on the rear, and it will make wheelies way easier.
I run 14 - 47. 80 mph at redline.

Very good question, does it have any aftermarket parts on it intake or exhaust?

W vid
BB big bore kit then you can gear up
Did you go to larger jets
Bike is EFI
I guess I'm just lucky. Top speed for me is 90. Stock gearing with air box lid removed. I do want a lil more grunt in the trails tho
Stock gearing no problems! Lol
Haha I put a shot of you ripping up the mountain with stock gearing in here. Leaving me in the dust 😂
No big deal, because if I am running 65-70 on pavement- I'm just killing my knobbies. Go slower on pavement, offroad tires won't melt so fast.
I put a 14/37 on mine also have a 13/42
No its not a fantastic dual sport- its a 'have a go' dual sport
Can you elaborate?
