  • Well, it was quite a "shock" to see Alabama Hills so DESOLATE and EMPTY! Last time I camped here with a buddy this place was BUSY! Now they have narrowed it down to where you really have to search for a "good spot" to stay in for several days. Seems they are "pushing" travelers into the Pay to camp BLM campgrounds near the hills, and they are many. We chose Tuttle Creek BLM campgrounds which were nice with Tuttle creak dividing the campground area in half.
My name is Mark and I travel with my two Girls, "Katie & Sara" (a Border Collie and an Irish Setter), as Semi-Nomads in our upgraded 2008 Pleasure-Ways Ascent - 19ft. Campervan. I bought this RV in 2018 and have spent the past 4 yrs. upgrading it for Boondocking & Dry Camping off-grid. We are retired and now enjoy the freedom of the open road exploring and making new friends and discoveries along the way. In our coming journeys we will crisscross the west from the wilds of Canada to the Mexican border and from the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean to the Golden Fields of the Plaine States and the heights of the Rocky Mountains. The girls and I hope you will join us on this journey of discovery and adventure.

We've been going to the Lone Pine area to camp for over 20 years. There were very few campers there, on BLM land, at Tuttle Creek campground, at Lone Pine Campground). Around 2010 Tuttle Creek Campground was closed for about 2 years for renovations (they replaced the picnic tables, fire rings, bathrooms, added a few sites, added the dump station, added potable water). Typically that campground would only get near full on Memorial Day weekend. We stayed about 5x in the Alabama Hills while Tuttle Creek Campground was closed, but it never had a lot of campers while we were there. You would only see a few people camping in the Alabama Hills (5 to 10 sites used). This went on through the mid 2010's about 2015. Boondocking got more popular and you started seeing more boondockers in the Alabama Hills. Then the pandemic hit. All of a sudden there were 100's of different areas where people were camping in the Alabama Hills at the same time. Trash. Poop. Toilet Paper. Vegetation getting driven on. Every time you turned a corner people were camping. Popular spots for rock climbing, sight seeing, hiking, movie shooting locations were now occupied by campers, many of whom did not want people near their campsite.
The time of Alabama Hills bustling with lots of campers was a very short lived time about 3 or 4 years. It's time to put it back the way it was before that.

That is exactly what the BLM hopes to do if people will COOPPERATE and see the "bigger picture."

Places are being either loved to death or simply destroyed by those that no longer "give a dam" about anything or get their kicks destroying it for others. Intelligence and common sense are lost on some people today.

Homeless and worthless campers leaving trash is why they closed these areas

No law enforcement and giving "privileges" to the "homeless" hurts EVERYONE! So do the Neanderthals that live like animals on our public lands, causing them to be "restricted".

It is pretty big and spread out. Most try Alabama Hills first. For the view and convenience, I now premier Tuttle. Haven't seen it packed, though.

So glad I moved out of California. Alabama Hills was a great Go-To place to camp. This past November I stayed here overnight on the way tp spend Thanksgiving with the grandbabies. I rolled in just after dusk to my favorite spot. I had just set up camp when a ranger stopped and pointed out it was Day Use only. I saw the sign but didn't pay much attention to it and thought the tent symbol confirmed it was a camp spot. It wasn't until daylight that I saw the slash through it indicating no camping. . He was super cool and let me stay when I told him I was just going to cook dinner, sleep and leave first thing in the morning. I had to pack most of camp gear so it didn't look like I was 'camping'. So sad to see all the closures and regs restricting the public use.
It only takes one or two idiots to ruin an area and they close it off.

And the "entitled" ones are ruining it all for the GOOD people.

    • @Tnapvrvideo
      @Tnapvrvideo Рік тому

Absolutely. I think the GOOD PEOPLE need to write the BLM and Ranger Headquarters and fully support a hefty fine program to be implemented and enforced. FINES are the only way to stop bad actions by bad people. A hefty fine, and I mean significant!, will cause these bad people to stay home. They won't have the funds to leave their home. That is a good thing. Instead of all of us being punished by closures, we need to request and support a fine system that will have a far greater outcome putting an end to land abuse.

Why do you say you are glad you moved out of California for that reason? You know how it is in states like Texas? Everything is privatized there. I couldn't even access a river. Must have driven up 30 miles to look for a spot to go river tubing. But everything was blocked off bc all the land is privatized. I actually found California to have far more land available for public use than so many other states.

I have never seen it where I did not have a choice of camp sites. Most try to eek out a free spot somewhere in the Alabama Hills and not get stuck in "sand traps!"

Great shots! We also found the day use and new signs at Alabama Hills. We are hoping to explore more BLM spots and will check your channel for more options. Do you have any favs aside from AH?

North near Mammoth Lakes is a developed BLM campground at Crowly lake, a great place to stay to fish the high lakes in the area.

I have been down there most recently in the early fall, Sept- Oct. The changing of the trees and climate makes the skies clear and beautiful. Next time I plan to do some fishing in the rivers and high mountain lakes down Hwy 395

Head South on 395 out of Lone Pine and head towards Death Valley past the district ranger station. Take the Dolomite Loop and there is lots of BLM area towards the big mine.

Look hard and you may find a level spot. Get out and walk some of the roads first. They can be treacherous with deep sand, hard to get back up out of in some of the "U" ditches or no outlets and you may have to back up! BLM certainly doesn't make finding a campsite there easy at all. It's more of an expedition done at you and your vehicle's own risk.

During the pandemic, there was a lot of camping activity with human Waste (AKA poop! ) deposited, shotgun shells littered the area, Etc Environmental impact on this area was immense, so they decided to limit it to the camping sites. A few bad apples….

It is always the actions of a few that destroy it for the majority and yet they still get away with it or with a slap on the hand. We need true LAW and ORDER again in this country.
