Hi, it used to be. However, with the surge of people during the pandemic, the BLM has installed new rules. Starting in the fall of 2021, camping outside of developed campgrounds in the Alabama Hills will be limited to areas shown on this map and marked with a campsite marker. @@m6n15 You would be fine on the main roads. The main road appears to be maintained and the only thing that you will have to deal with is some washboard. You might struggle on some of the side roads. Just keep your eyes peeled and know the limitations of your car and you should be fine :)
NICE video! But the Alabama Hills' movie history actually began around 1919, with a Jack Hoxie western, Lightning Bryce. Dozens of movies were filmed there before Gene Autry's Boots and Saddles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_shot_in_Lone_Pine
Those footage were taken years ago when there were no drone laws in the area. Things have changed since then I'm sure but not when we took these videos.
Wide angle. 50mm matches your eye. I camp at Independence on creek at campground. Foothill Road is off Onion Valley. Shepard Pass TH. Campgrounds at bottom of Onion Valley road too. And up top. Its amazingly busy compared too 2010. Whole Eastern Sierra. Carson Reno LA. Pile in. Top of last hill is sweet. Road is crap. If someone else is up there you are neighbors.
You should be able to drive on the main road. There is washboard so it might be bumpy but it should work. The side roads are quite a bit more rugged though and cars wouldn't make it
The type of rock is pretty similar but that's about it. The view of Mt. Whitney CA and all of the unique arches give this place a special place in our hearts. It's also all dirt roads out there, so it feels like more of an adventure when you are exploring it.

We havent personally seen any out there, but I think it would be a fair assumption that you could encounter some. Just watch your step :)

It is such a wonderful place to camp. Just go during the right season. We have camped there when it got down to the low 20's. It was so cold!
I thought Alabama Hills was BLM and you could just camp anywhere.
That used to be the case. Over the course of the pandemic, crowds got too big and they started requiring a permit to camp.

Do you need to air down to go on the off road paths? Or is it easy enough that you don't need to air down?
Depends on which roads you take. We've done a few of them and we didn't have to air down.

You have drone footage of Alabama Hills yet flying drones in Alabama Hills is prohibited by law.
Those footage were taken years ago when there were no drone laws in the area. Things have changed since then I'm sure but not when we took these videos.
