For those who don't know, taken from Wikipedia: Jane Mallory Birkin OBE (/ˈbɜːrkɪn/; 14 December 1946 - 16 July 2023) was a British-French actress and singer. She had a prolific career as an actress, mostly in French cinema. A native of London, Birkin began her career as an actress, appearing in minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup (1966), and Kaleidoscope (1966). The region is amazing, I visited there just under a year ago because I had never been and I was amazed by the nature, climate and local culture! Great job on finding a home with both land and character in such a nice location, close to town. Much better than a maison pavillonaire, those monotonous homes on tiny lots, similar to those in Sun Belt suburbs. You found something better with a lot of potential!
For god sake please get rid of every pieces of cement (beton portland) especially the one covering the façade the oustide of each of your walls. Cement causes moisture en every place in your house. I mean extreme moisture . You will replace it by "chaux hydraulique" (ask your neighbourgs) mixed with sand. Ask me for more.
I can confirm this!! Me and some friends stayed for a week in a rental gîte near Angoulême last summer, and while it was "technically" cooler in the house, it didn't feel like it because it was like 74% humidity in the home when outside it was maybe 30% (the temp outside was about 37C, inside was maybe 29C), the ventilation in the rental was horrible, none of the windows had the vents at the top. I was the only foreigner with all French people, I wanted to keep the volets down in the gîte but open all the windows to get the humidity out, I didn't care about the heat, humidity is way worse in my opinion, but the French people with me were more concerned about the heat, anyways, whatever. But what I noticed was that most renovation on the building were done with concrete/cement, I don't know much, but adobe homes are common where I'm from, west coast of the US, and concrete doesn't breathe, so this gîte was a double whammy of no ventilation, lol
@@aeolia80yes, unfortunately a lot of renovation back in the day didn’t bother about using cement on old building. Now it’s common knowledge but lot of house have these issue.
Thanks for the video! And congratulations for your purchase! What I can see in your videos is that you're getting more and more relieved and fullfilled, which makes me really happy for you. As a Frenchmen, we can be sometimes grumpy but we forget to be grateful to live in such an incredible country despite our moronic government. I wish you all the best
Some part of your house might be built around the 17th but, many features of this house show that it was extended or rebuilt in the early 20th. Very nice home though, and great garden 👍
1700 means 18th century, and this house is definitely not from the 18th century; as you said, it was rebuilt in the 20th century. A "maison bourgeoise" (not bourgeoisie) BTW is always bigger than a "normal" house.
@@tutlegrand @BaguetteBound Yes, the concrete could be removed as it is usual now in this region since 20-30 years. The local stone, light beige, a little yellow ochre, is beautiful.

Married to a French guy and live in Houston. Have spent many summers in France during the past 2 decades while raising my kids around the world in a mixed culture household. Great adventure you guys are living!!! Your home is beautiful as it is, many foreigners go to France and want to make their homes look like the French catalog for tourists,. Every region in France has it's charm and originality, cement homes are also part of the French architecture, love the layout of your house. Good luck from Texas. France is a beautiful place ❤
Ever since you announced you purchased a home, I’ve waited with bated breath for your video and am over the moon happy for you and your score of a lifetime. It’s a beautiful home with loads of history to share. I’m amazed at the reasonable price you paid. Good on You! Ah! The bidet. I also have washed my feet in one. I believe it was in Italy, regardless, it’s a handy tool to have. In the future, should you find yourselves in need of a house keeper and gardener, I and my credentialed Master Gardener husband would love to serve! In the meantime, I hope you’ll continue to update us on your restoration/updating progress. Prends bien soin de.
Frenchman here. Congratulations, you've had an unique opportunity with this house and its charming former owners! 14:39 Ah, the bidet! When I was a child, my mom explained to me (a little embarrassed) that it was used to wash feet... (Yes, it is!) But as I got older and learned more, I found out what it was really for... 😅
@earlyNova I'm French as well, and we had a bidet in the apartment my parents were renting when I was a kid, and she told me the same thing, that it was you for the feet 😂😂 I learned, much, much later what it was actually for 😂
Same here. We had a bidet when I was a kid, never used it. I know that it's designed also for the intimacy, but I've only seen people using it for feet. Anyway, I don't even think 1% of french use a bidet nowadays.
Congratulations on your new house. Totally love the builtins, armoires, exposed wiring and plumbing pipes etc. All of the things that most people in the US would tare out and bury in the walls. You are fortunate that it came completely furnished especially with the hidden goodies. Lovely grounds too. Nice color choice with the blue, one of my favorites. The three of you seem to team up very nicely. I’ve just started looking online for something much smaller in the Nantes/Loire valley regions. That’s how I found your channel. All best. Joe and Gigi retired in Cape May. All my best wishes.
This a liquor of raspberry from 1957 (even though it is very old, this is alcohol so it doesn't matter that much). By the way, I lived in the french countryside in Maine-et -Loire (my dad is a farmer) and it's just so much cool for both parents and childs to have grown up there. I think it's important because you get some important values by metting people that are not disconnected of the real world or even delusionnal because of the great cities. (in France we say "keeping the feet on Earth"). Country side is also the place where you must learn by yourself, where you can discover the nature and understand the legacy of the (old) people you'll find. As I'm now living in a greater city (Nantes), I'm really proud to show that i've been living in country side aswell.
My husband and I are moving to France in the next week. We are beyond excited. We were so glad to have discovered your channel. Your information is so helpful. We love your property and house. So much character. 😊

Hi, i'm in south west just near Pyrenées Mountains . Great pleasure to see you enjoy our beatiful and peaceful countryside. Your sweet place reminds me my grandparents home. birds sounds, quiet mornings.. magnifique souvenirs. Prenez soins de vous et bienvenue.
I have family in the Charentes near Saintes and Cognac. I spent all my childhood holidays there in the 60s. Old women were still washing their clothes in the public washhouse with their wooden beaters because linen was turning whiter and cleaner this way. Every family had his own small herd of cows. They remember their English past, the traditional women's headdress is called humourously "Quichenotte" that means "Kiss not " Things have changed but the area is still very authentic and people very welcoming. I wish you a lot of happiness in this charming region.
Great video. Thanks again. We're an American fam of 3 with a toddler who is debating some visas to get to Europe. Including DNV Spain, NLV France, etc. You're videos are very informative and inspirational.

Merci pour cette petite visite ! Wouha !
Congrats wit the house, it looks great. And it's very big. You live close by us. We are in clairac 45 minutes away from Eymet. We visit often the monthly brocante market there.
Great house! I may be wrong but I think you have an olive tree in your garden... Am I right? If you do, collect them when they're ripe (= black) some time at the end of automn (it depends on the variety). Put them in a very big salad bowl with 100g of salt for every kg of olives. Keep them in the kitchen and give them a stir any time you pass by (they will release some juice). About a week or two later, taste a few olives to see if they've lost their bitterness. Then, rinse them several times in a lot of water, drain them and let them dry thoroughly: they must be completely dry or else they will turn mouldy. Then put them into jars with a bay leaf and a twig of thyme in each jar and fill the jars with ordinary vegetable oil (no olive oil!) such as rape-seed, corn or sunflower oil. Put the lids on. They will keep perfectly in one of your beautiful 'armoires" for apéritif or in stews or pizzas. These are called "olives à la grecque" (= greek style) and it is a very popular recipe here in Provence.
Oh my gosh thank you!! We do have an olive tree and we've been wondering what to do with them! Thank you for writing out the instructions, we are saving them. Très gentil! 😊
Very happy for you, what a great place! I appreciate that you mentioned it's proximity to town. I was wondering. That seems like the perfect balance to have some peace and quiet but still be able to walk to town. Félicitations! 🎉
Congratulations its a beautiful house. May you have many happy memories there. We have just agreed to buy a large french barn property in the Charente, yesterday.
One thing you should tell your compatriots is that Eymet is considered the capital of "Dordogneshire", an area of Périgord where British retirees are settling in droves. As a result, the locals (traders, craftsmen, etc.) are very accustomed to English-speaking residents. But this is not the case in other French countryside, particularly in the central regions, where many residents still do not master English and where it is difficult to live if you do not speak a little French. Apart from that, your house is very pretty, the garden and the view are magnificent.
Hello neighbours, I'm just 40 minutes down the road from you, congratulations and good luck with your refurbishing, I'll remember to look out for you the next time I'm in your area, all the best.

I've lived in France since 1997, and I will never go back. I discovered your channel and I smiled when I looked at your videos. Life here is so much different, but it's real .. and offers genuine quality. I now live in the Alps and actually work in Switzerland, but before I lived on the seaside in Brittany. You have everything you need here, and in most places it is affordable. The food is great, not to mention the great wine you can actually afford to buy. Learning french is not so difficult, but it's very important to mix in and show that you want to integrate. Good luck to you and I'm looking forward to seeing your next video!

Use a lime morter
@@aeolia80yes, unfortunately a lot of renovation back in the day didn’t bother about using cement on old building. Now it’s common knowledge but lot of house have these issue.

Thanks for the video! And congratulations for your purchase! What I can see in your videos is that you're getting more and more relieved and fullfilled, which makes me really happy for you. As a Frenchmen, we can be sometimes grumpy but we forget to be grateful to live in such an incredible country despite our moronic government. I wish you all the best
Aw, thank you, I think your observations are true! 😊
A beautiful house and an amazingly spacious garden; so much potential ❤
Some part of your house might be built around the 17th but, many features of this house show that it was extended or rebuilt in the early 20th. Very nice home though, and great garden 👍
I'm sure you're right. We based that date on what the family told us, but we also think it's been changed and added to over the years.
And behind the concrete on the outside walls, there might be stones, that may look beautiful.
Oh! Jane & Serge in a frame in your bedroom! Great tastes!
What a gorgeous property. Very happy for you, and wishing you the warmest of wishes. 😊❤️😊
This house is beautiful, so romantic! ... and the park even more so. Some paint and a new kitchen, and you are all set !
Bonjour,
It was a pleasure to meet you at that nice night market just two days after discovering your videos. Small world. Enjoy this lovely season and the great activities it offers, in particular these wonderful night markets!

Yes! So happy for this coincidence. It was a lovely to meet you, I'm so glad you said hello. 😄 Bonnes vacances à toute la famille !
What a great place! I wish you all the best in transformig into your dream house.
Thank you for the tour of your French country home! We have a home in France as well as the U.S., and we’ve been renovating our home in France.🇫🇷
Good luck with all your work!
Merci!! ❤️
Thank you for the good wishes. And yes, on the new plans we weren't going to keep the bidet...but now I'm thinking maybe....? 🤔
Thanks for watching! 😄

Congratulations on your new home. I love it. So happy for you.
Merci beaucoup!
Beautiful people.... beautiful life! And, oh man does that bread look good!
😂
@earlyNova I'm French as well, and we had a bidet in the apartment my parents were renting when I was a kid, and she told me the same thing, that it was you for the feet 😂😂 I learned, much, much later what it was actually for 😂
Same here. We had a bidet when I was a kid, never used it. I know that it's designed also for the intimacy, but I've only seen people using it for feet. Anyway, I don't even think 1% of french use a bidet nowadays.

That place is so beautiful. Vous ette heureux!
I have been waiting impatiently for a tour. Thank you!
Thanks for waiting...it took longer to put together than we thought.
The color of the office walls!!! ❤
Bravo! C’est magnifique!
Hey Raina! You’ve come a long way from Baylor Garland ICU 😂. Looks like you are living your best life. So happy for you!!! We’re still in Houston planning to get out of Texas in a couple of years. Not as exotic as France, unfortunately. 😊
So happy for you, what a great find.

Thank you so much for sharing your home with us! Very neat to get to follow you on your journey! It’s a lovely home!
it's incredible how much cheaper the houses are compared to the Paris region. I'd love to taste that Framboise liquor with you. Not sure if it's still any good but would be worth a try 😉

Thank you for sharing. Super nice house!
We close on our French house in the Charente in one month.
So excited.
I have family in the Charentes near Saintes and Cognac. I spent all my childhood holidays there in the 60s. Old women were still washing their clothes in the public washhouse with their wooden beaters because linen was turning whiter and cleaner this way. Every family had his own small herd of cows. They remember their English past, the traditional women's headdress is called humourously "Quichenotte" that means "Kiss not "
Things have changed but the area is still very authentic and people very welcoming.
I wish you a lot of happiness in this charming region.
Great video. Thanks again. We're an American fam of 3 with a toddler who is debating some visas to get to Europe. Including DNV Spain, NLV France, etc.
You're videos are very informative and inspirational.
Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your story en showing the house!
I love closed and unfitted kitchens! So much caracter and... that's exactly what I am going to have in my lovely French country House!
Love your video ❤️. 22 years ago we decided to find a holiday cottage in Brittany ~ found a house (far too big for a holiday cottage) we fell in love with it and decided to move from U.K. permanently. Going round your home brings back all the memories of our first adventures. Good luck and I look forward to following your progress 👍.
Armoires galore! What a lovely home, congratulations!
Merci pour cette petite visite ! Wouha ! 😘
Thank you! 😊

@@BaguetteBound I had a mature olive tree in Phoenix. I decided to try them off the tree when they were almost ripe. BAD IDEA. Listen to Alex!
Very happy for you, what a great place! I appreciate that you mentioned it's proximity to town. I was wondering. That seems like the perfect balance to have some peace and quiet but still be able to walk to town. Félicitations! 🎉

Congratulations, a fun project ahead! The house is probably early 20th Century. Love your taste in colours.
Congratulations its a beautiful house. May you have many happy memories there.
We have just agreed to buy a large french barn property in the Charente, yesterday.
Thank you and congrats!!
Thank you for sharing ❤
One thing you should tell your compatriots is that Eymet is considered the capital of "Dordogneshire", an area of Périgord where British retirees are settling in droves. As a result, the locals (traders, craftsmen, etc.) are very accustomed to English-speaking residents.
But this is not the case in other French countryside, particularly in the central regions, where many residents still do not master English and where it is difficult to live if you do not speak a little French.
Apart from that, your house is very pretty, the garden and the view are magnificent.
Why on earth should the locals speak English (or the US version of it??)!!
Congrats! Beautiful house with lots of potential😊
Hello neighbours, I'm just 40 minutes down the road from you, congratulations and good luck with your refurbishing, I'll remember to look out for you the next time I'm in your area, all the best.

Pretty awesome house. Congrats and enjoy!
I love the floors, furniture and park. We call the open kitchens "cuisines américaines"...
I don't understand what you did to the wallpapers ;-) Some people might advice chemicals to remove the glue but I prefer to use a steam machine.
Beware of plumbing and electricity while renovating, make it safe and long-lasting if you can afford it before painting and decorating.
what a lovely home, you are blessed!
me and my wife are looking to move to France, and I think this is an amazing space, we are going to visit the south of France in the next week. But what is your town name called? did I hear M.A france?

I think it is Eymet, in Dordogne. Eymet recently became famous because of its strong community of British expats/immigrants.
Yep! It's Eymet.

Very nice house, thanks for the video. What region is this?
Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Just subscribed to your channel. You guys seem to be such a lovely couple - best of luck!
Très jolie maison. Bienvenue😊
I am SO excited for you guys! I absolutely love Eymet and it is one of the top villages in our search for our home in France.
We're really enjoying living here. It's such a lovely village all year round. Good luck in your search!
There are many expat communities, but that's not at all the same as blending in with the locals.
I'm glad you enjoy your life here and that you promote it.
Good luck to you and I'm looking forward to seeing your next video!
Thanks!! 🙂
Félicitations, Raina and Jason. Lovely. Enjoy it!
