FRENCH Grocery Shopping: What's It Like?

About Us:
We are an American family of 3 who moved to France for an extended stay adventure in 2022.
We wanted to experience Europe as more than rushed tourists on a 10-day vacation. To dive into the culture, learn a new language, experience daily life, and truly know what it was like to work and live somewhere other than the US.
In France, we set up a business, enrolled in a middle school, found housing, and even got our cat a European passport!
While in the US preparing to leave, the information we found about staying in France for longer than a short vacation was directed at college students, young & single digital nomads, or retirees. Where was the useful information for families like us?
With a year under our belts in France, we created Baguette Bound to pass on what we have learned. We hope to make it easier and inspire other families who are interested in experiencing a long stay in France with their families. Stay tuned for more information on French culture, local travel ideas, and the logistics of moving across the world.

I have been enjoying your videos. They are informative and practical. Thanks! We were planning to move to France in a couple of years, european bi-national couple, but with the rise of the far right and the success of the National Rally in the European elections, primarily due to the sweeping votes they received from the countryside, the Dordogne included, we are re-thinking our plans. Their anti immigration policy makes me wonder how things will be for immigrants five years down the road. Plus I’m afraid it reveals what the French really think about the influx of immigrants, of all nationalities, to their country. After reading about the National Rally’s negative history when voting on GLBT rights and seeing that the majority of their votes come from the French countryside means a move to the Dordogne region is out for us now, probably the country as a whole. Sadly!

you can make brown sugar: Light brown sugar: Use 1 tablespoon of molasses per cup of sugar Dark brown sugar: Use 2 tablespoons of molasses per cup of sugar, or add 1/2 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired color you can probably find molasses in organic or natural stores in France. Otherwise have your family bring jars of molasses from the states. It will go farther than bringing the brown sugar.

Every supermarket chain is different. At Carrefour, Monoprix, Casino you can find many different sorts of bacon. Many people get their meat, co,dcuts and prepared dishes at a boucherie/charcuterie , traiteur, or even at the marketplaces . American “ cheese” is not even classified as cheese in the US; it’s a dairy product.

The real cost of Santé in France is the cotisations you make, so it's a bit of misleading to imply that a carte vitale and a mutuelle is the only expense. Yes, the system presumes everyone contributes and thus all can benefit. I run my own business and pay 46% of my profit in cotisations before taxes. It's not cheap for some. I believe the health care budget equates to €5000 per head in France so if you're not paying somebody is, Adds up quickly if you have a family of four for instance and barely contributing as many in citizens in France don't.

In Portugal, the National Health Service, financed by taxes and not by Social Security contributions, is free for millionaires or those who have no income. Covers medical emergency, ambulances, family doctor, hospitalizations, surgeries, cancer treatments, even the rarest, rare diseases, whose medicines cost millions of euros, insulin, home oxygen, CT scans, MRIs, etc. And like any foreigner, in case of emergency, access to everything free of charge, we have health tourists, and a law is being studied to prevent abusive cases

Regarding water in restaurants, I think it's a matter of not knowing what water the customer wants. From the tap, spring, mineral, smooth or sparkling? I only use ice in gintonic, and I always ask for cold mineral water and I don't want ice cubes made with tap water. In southern European countries, there is aperitif time, which only in Spain is almost always accompanied by a "tapa", and meals, even "goûter", which corresponds to the British five o'clock tea, or the espress are to sip, which makes it difficult to walk or stand. I've never tried junk food, but I know that MacDo adopts some local idiosyncrasies. Here and in Italy, espressos have always been served. And of course dinners are long, because it's always the time when family or friends get together to talk. Life is to be savored like a dinner in a Michelin-starred restaurant.

I lived in many places in France, north, east .. west .. south .. and South West where i live now (Dordogne), it's certainly one of the best place if you like nature and chateaux. You got mountains not that far (Pyrénées) and ocean too (Atlantique) and it's pretty "green" .. lot of trees, rivers... So yea you did not made a bad choice here, and Bordeaux is a nice city, even if it tend to become very crowded and lost some of it appeal (i lived 20 years in Bordeaux/Arcachon) it's still a human size city, building are not very tall .. (it tend to change).

Might be hard to find where you live but you can get unrefined canne sugar aka brown sugar (the wet stuff) in asian supermarkets all around paris, baking soda is everywhere i don't get why you would find it. Homebaking is big in france it's just not the same recipes. Chocolate is for all time of day, you've got only one life, treat yourself. The American Burger thing would be the same as french dressing, it's not a thing here but exist out of france... it's just marketing. Precut lardons are bad, full of salt and give off too much water when cooking. Buy smoked "poitrine" and cut it yourself, it's way better and you can have it as thick or thin slices, or cube it to the size you need.

We're not using fork&Knives all the time, french fries .. 50/50, tacos : hands, Burger : 50/50.... etc .. depend. But yes, we use it far more often then americans, why we use it ... cause hand carries a lot of germs, fork and knive is the best solution, of course you still got to wash your hands .. but .. well .. not as precisely. Sparkling water is common but tapwater is by far the most common, you can ask for tap water at a restaurant, it's free. Coktails are pretty common but at night, in night clubs for example. Eating while driving .. is simply forbiden by law.... and we can't see why we would eat while driving, driving is a serious business and eating too, better take time to stop and eat, we still do it on occasion. Knowing where food come from : It's better to buy product that were created near you, for the planet.. for the local activity. Then you know that some product are better in some regions, which mean .. knowing where a product come from is important, plus .. the guy that create this product have a name, an image to carry .. pushing him to make a good/better product. You got to see it like a brane in a way. For example, there is no way i'll buy a product from Israël anymore, the origin of a product is very important. AOP, AOC : they are very important to keep a quality level ort whoever would build camembert ... in many different ways .. and the name would be lost in different poroducts. Butter : We got butter at diner or whatever, it just depend with what, with radish for example .. butter yes, with pasta in some recipes, let's say it's already very present in French recipes. The butter you buy in supermarket are not real butter, well they are .. but they are industrial ones, like milk, if you try a real one they are FAR FAR more flavors in them. But sadly, because of stupid regulations, it's pretty hard to get some... just go to a guy that produce milk, buy some (not UHT right) and make your own butter... it's very yellowish and then you'll understand what is real butter, you like the industrial one ... then test that. In a restaurant... you could still ask for butter, i can see no problem here ... ou ask politely and they will get you some. And don't bother if you meet dumb french .. there are many here too .. :D

This was super, and so far (in the middle of the process) about what my wife and I have experienced. Thanks for reinforcing that what we're experiencing is not out of the ordinary. So far, no Tahiti-based seller. Since we know we have months to go, I have been tracking the Euro-dollar exchange rates so we can lock in at a decent savings compared to the day we made our offer. (Let's go, ECB, cut those interest rates again before the Fed does!) But our inspector's discovery of rotting wood has led to a very unusual (and I am almost ashamed to say, American) price-retrade. The estate agent keeps saying "this is no problem, this is a small thing, this is cheap to fix, every old house has this..." and every new euphemism I hear, the price goes down in my mind because my trust is eroding. I think he is assuming a 5,000 euro adjustment and I am thinking 100,000. We'll see what the missus has to say about that. If we have to replace the cement-based render over the whole house, that won't be cheap and I will be most put-out. I guess I'll be shoveling French drains while the masons are re-skinning the house.... Our English-speaking attorney and notaire in Paris are both suggesting we walk away, but it's a nice house in a nice location, so we're willing to arm wrestle over things. Likely to be a learning experience all around.

It's doable, although it takes many years (at least in our situation). Besides the language requirement and 5 years legal residency to begin the process, you must prove that your life and economic interests now center on France. Plus of course, a host of administrative requirements. But it is certainly possible! 🙂

I found your video by chance. If you live not far from Bordeaux, my favourite city in France, after Paris, my birth city, I will give you a tip. Go visit the town of Arcachon, the seaside resort located in the bay of the same name, about 76 km from Bordeaux. Arcachon Bay is almost closed and surrounded by one of the largest forest areas in Western Europe. It is known for its oyster farming. Much of the city is located in the bay and the other on the Atlantic coast with its long Atlantic sandy beaches, not overcrowded like on the Côte d'Azur. You'll find many small oyster-farming villages full of charm around the bay. At the other end of the bay is the Cap Ferret peninsula with its beautiful villas and fishermen's huts. The paradise of my childhood, but also of my children.

Tip for you : if you don't have a euro for your trolley or if you don't have the plastic token, you can go at the reception desk to get one. It's free. Works in any supermarket or craftshop. NB : In some areas trolleys don't need coins to use them. ;-)

HEB would be a hard adjustment most Americans wouldn’t understand, much less, Europeans. My preferred Houston blend would be difficult to give up.

What are you talking about,?, Of course there's brown sugar!

Afraid not. Most stores, at least in SW France, do not offer anything like the moist, brown sugar found in nearly every grocery store in the US. When it comes to baking, there just isnt a similar product that works quite as well.

Hello, do not buy ham in plastic containers. You should prefer to take some at the « charcutier » corner.Ask for « jambon blanc bleu blanc cœur » 😉

Americans are productive, they're not better then the others. It's a false feeling. We kind optimise for pleasure, evaluating efficiency is not an easy task. I've landed twice in the USA (LA and San Franscisco) ... and .. i wasted hours in their lugages check, paper form to fill ... that was not efficient at all. Is efficiency building a million new houses or improve existent ones ... is it building a maximum of coca cola bottle .. or using reusable glass bottles ... Efficiency is maximizing pleasure in life and if you came to France its certainly cause this was something important for you, take your time... just enjoy what you do .. do not rush for the next thing you have to do.... just enjoy every second. It can be hard to follow this path but once you are into it ... nothing can touch you appart from disease and death.

Coming from Ireland, the first thing I notice in French supermarkets is the smell. Charcuterie, fromagerie, boulangerie etc. So different from home. ❤🤍💙🇫🇷

Good morning, concerning pastry items such as the baking powder you mentioned, we use it in cakes, but sparingly as it gives a strange taste to the cakes. I saw that there were items from La Patelière that were too expensive to buy. As far as ham is concerned, please go to a butcher's and delicatessen which makes its own ham, and sincerely as for cheeses... go to a cheese dairy. don't forget that real ham isn't pink, it's grey. it's the nitrites that make it pink. I think that sugar in America comes from sugar cane whereas sugar in France comes essentially from sugar beet. This was decided by Napoleon to make up for the lack of sugar which, at the time, came from his enemies, the English. There's a long tradition of homemade pastries in France; every mother had her secrets. Of course they're being lost, but they still exist, like clafoutis, floating islands, rice pudding, semolina cakes, baked apples, French toast and pudding made from old bread.
