    Wow a size 4 chubby?! That's a serious cheech-sized dry fly :) Do you guys ever tie your wings in with blended colours of EP fibers (or polyprop yarn of choice)? I've been thinking about mixing the fiber colours and adding some UV blue fibers to the mix for a higher vis aspect.

    Firehole used to be a good brand, but the quality has gone downhill pretty bad. Weak hooks and multiple mangled hooks per box. Pretty disappointing

      Happens with a lot of brands. This hook is still my choice. One of the strongest Firehole dry hooks.

    Awesome tutorial! I’m still a beginner, but I’ve been tying this pattern in a size 14 here in Colorado. By far my favorite hopper pattern to fish. Keep up the good work guys!

    I have caught so many fish on this hopper I have lost count. I fish the Arkansas River in Colorado and have for years. I tie these in all sizes and different colors. August and September for sure. I am not an expert at making these things. It does not matter. Its a big meal for a trout. --- Beatles work great also.

    THis is a heavily tied fly or "over tied" as some say. So securing material like the wing and legs can be iffy. To help, touch some super glue onto your thread after the 1st wrap to position the material. It's quick, its easy, it works and it won't screw up your legs like using a drop of glue applied directly to the fly. You shouldn't or should BARELY see any super glue on the thread before wrapping/tying down the wing and legs. These 'over tied' flies, often seen in Western patterns, have a bad habit of losing parts! In fact, I've taken thin super glue with me to touch to wing and leg base tie-in spots to secure them. Way too often, I've bought flies and the wing or leg came off. It's a good trick. It's not easy to screw up. It's quick and it works.

    The takes I had on the CC last night I now have to agree with you, especially warm summer evenings, close to undercut backs, gets smashed every time!

      Check out Berrys PCP. Basically copper tungsten bead, peacock hurl body, copper ribbing, and a small pink thread hotspot. I find that to be a killer here in Oregon. I imagine it would work anywhere in the west.

    HOW did you get the ice dub on that fast and even? Is it a long sparse clump so you do the whole length at once just working down?

    • @FlyFishFood
      @FlyFishFood  3 роки тому +1

      Pretty much. It doesn’t need to be a super tight noodle because it’s such a bulky fly.

      basically works june through september on any large water west of the mississipi more or less 9/10 days barring super weird weather and its more versatile than almost any other dry (good in chop, dry dopper, floats all day long, imitates a wide variety of terrestrials and stoneflies). Not sure if your comment was bait/trolling but theres your answer hahaha.

      1.5 hook gap typically but that hook is a wide gap so 1.0 that gap.

    Really nice fly and well presented. I was anticipating putting Z-ment on the top of the front foam, pushing it back, tying ahead of it to secure, and then cutting the foam to length and snipping the corners to get a gurgler style action when moved.
