    When I a kid, we lived for a couple of years (around 1974-76) in North Eastern Nigeria, in a town called Mubi.
    It had previously been part of Deutches Kamerun (German Cameroon) prior to 1919.
    Even in the mid-70s you could still commonly find Deutches Reich coins being traded and sold in the local market! 🙂

      Germany's most important influence was during the Berlin Conference in the 1880s: all the European powers split up Africa and gave a lot of the controversial borders we have today.

    I think the only lasting impact Germany had on Africa is the fact that there is an active politician in Namibia right now called Adolf Hitler Uunona.
    By the way, his parents (and himself until not long ago) had no idea who they were naming their son after. When he found out, he declared that he does not intend to conquer the world.

      germany still has fairly good relations with its former colonies and they were the first, to treat black and white soldiers equally on army level (German Colonial Army under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck)

      Arguably colonies are a waste of money because unless you start building infrastructure and building its economy like the US did with the Philippines you are going to spend more time putting down rebellions and trying to secure your possessions from other nations.

      @@ericeric-zv2qs The Philippines were once considered for potential statehood before and after the Philippino American War however congress did not want a large majority non white nation to join the US so the Philippines were handed commonwealth status and could more or less run itself. Before ww2 there was already a independence movement so it only made sense the US granted the Philippines independence. After all it was a promise we made to them during the Spanish American War.

    I worked with a fella from Namibia at Disney. He spoke perfect German. Very happy guy . Learned a bit of German from him. I went on to get a book and c.d. to further the language!😊😊

    Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, Löwe von Afrika. He and his small number of Askari soldiers tied up hundreds of thousands of Entente troops in Africa, never defeated in the field and only surrendering several weeks after the armistice.
    Also when he came calling he told Hitler to fuck off, only “not so politely as that” according to someone who was there.

    Not-fun fact; German colonial forces committed the first genocide of the 20th century in German South-West Africa, begining in 1904 and perpetrated against the Herero and Namaqua people. To give you an idea of how grim it was, a number of heads of murdered Herero people were cleaned and sent back to the homes of German officers, and gifted to universities to teach eugenics. Many of these skulls have still not been returned.

      no he didn't care about African colonies, the position of Germany was mostly that colonies were a waste of time and money. German power was directed at Europe itself.
      He was far more mad about the loss of actual German territory filled with actual Germans for hundreds of years rather than some backwater on another continent which he had never been to that had only been owned by Germany for 30 years.

    Every African should learn from this and support those West African nations and in fact the whole continent from imperialism and neocolonialism. De-entanle yourself from the vehicles of imperialism such as UN, World Bank, IMF etc. Come to a consensus on a form of government that will work for your people based on your culture and that will lift your masses out of poverty. It could be anything as long as it does not deal a blow on human dignity and not necessarily what is being forcefully passed down your throat that multiplies corruption among your elite and that does not serve your interest. The uploader of this video left out the horrible crimes committed by the Germans and their cousins against the natives of the land in the process of acquiring these so called colonies!

Germanys colonial empire only lasted so short, because until 1871 Germany wasn´t even united, the big scramble for Africa didn´t even start until 1885 and Germany lost all colonies in 1918.

      Only about 2% of the Namibian population speaks German as a native language. There are about 40 thousand Germans in Namibia. German is offered as a school subject. About 10% of school children choose to take it

    Apart from the Rwanda and Burundi going to Belgium not Britain mistake you made another mistake, the Sultanate of Zanzibar was a British protectorate from 1890 to 1963 which comprised the islands of Zanzibar. A more accurate way to say what made up German East Africa would be saying it was made up of Rwanda, Burundi and Tanganyika (the name of Tanzania before Zanzibar joined it in 1963)

    Tanganyika, not Tanzania. That name came after and includes the Island of Zanzibar, which German East Africa did not include.

    If I’m not mistaken, Germany, or at least some Deutschland residents might have some legal grievances with Yemen. Apparently, every time I travel there, there’s always at least that one guy to remind you sarcastically, Yemen stole our flag. even though that’s technically not historically accurate, I still find it amusing every time I travel there.
