- You can download the original audio file of this piece on etiennedelavau... This arrangement of Simon and Garfunkel's hit is played on a 5-chord zither made in East Germany sometimes during the 60s or 70s. It has single melody strings. Both single and double melody strings instruments are played exactly the same way. On a zither with double melody strings, both strings are tuned in unison.
My third grade teacher would play one of those. Haven't heard one in person since and I'm 65.
We had to learn how to play these in music class. I cant remember their name but we learned the xylophone abt the same time 😊
Wow and you remember your grade 3 teacher. He/she must be special to you.
Nayli Syazwina you don’t remember all of your teachers?
Indian classical singers play this. This is swarmandal
Yes my music teacher used one she called it an autoharp.
I have been playing the zither since I was six and I'm in my mid 60s now. This is glorious!
Oh how I miss those days, Carolyn.. remember when there were so many things people could do? And how they could get together and enjoy those things together for hours on end.. Remember the simplicity and fulfillment and enrichment? Remember the enjoyment of the beautiful intricacies of the simplicity? Remember the long hours of days without mindless distractions that willed us to think and imagine and do naturally? So many things I remember.. and the people I miss so much.
@@shaneh1003 It's funny you say all of that. So, I'll share this with you. I own a small piece of property that I'm building my paradise on. One of the rules I will maintain is for those who either live there or who visit, all phones, tablets etc will stay in the car and not come inside the gates. Inside we tend to animals (mostly ducks, possibly rabbits and a goat. Maybe some chickens too and certainly a few dogs), we will eat our own food from our garden, we will enjoy communion with each other and we will NOT allow ourselves to be distracted by such things. No tv, no computers, no nothing. Just us and nature and friends.
@@danroberts9050 That does sound wonderful, and rare. Don’t forget all the things people used to enjoy, or just participate in, together. Music, crafts, hard work, outdoor games, stories, etc. The cameras recording and photographing it all may be your most difficult thing to dissuade.
Thank you for sharing. I live in what used to be a small town, and work on a ranch outside a town with only a fire/water dept., a church, and a community center that used to be a schoolhouse, but even out there it’s very rare to find anyone living free and natural. They all need the materialism, technology, and artificiality to be satisfied.
@@danroberts9050 Slowly whole world will turn to this. And 10,000 years down he line, some idiots will declare that you were primitive, did not have any technology.
@@shaneh1003 sadly the world has changed and not for the better. Folks today have lost so much of the tru meaning of living , help and just being kind.
i'm sorta shocked that i've never heard about a zither in my entire life. What a beautiful instrument.
We had one in the school I went to forv6th grade. I got to try it one and enjoyed it.
Otherwise, I was the backup I when one of our identical twins who normally accompanied our singing sessions on the small portable organ the school had w a rent available.
As we had an upright piano at home I was summation self tight on tha t, and then folks git me an a coercion. I still have it 70 yrs later. My family always lived music. I also had a guitar for 30nyrs but my brontook it to repair it, then gave it away after. I've never forgiven him for that...
Accidentally learned about one trying to find mandolin pieces
The film "The Third Man" theme tune and the recurring music throughout is played on a zither by Anton Karas. Very much a classic.
Please brother give it a try Seek God Jesus it’s not about religion but about a relationship with the Creator God is real and He wants a friendship with you ❤️❤️❤️
@@Eduardo_3334 no thanks, what i learned from religion is that they want to control your life for their own benefit, they don't care anything about you, they're just looking for slaves to work for them. You don't need God, jesus is a liar, and you don't need heaven. It's just a carrot on a stick, they promise all kinds of things, but never deliver, especially no proof. Save yourself from the lies. It hurts me to see people still following these herectic books. They abuse your trust. There is no relationship between you and God, God doesn't need you, God never talks to you, in your prayer you are just talking to yourself. Just try it, ask god to talk to you and then remain silent, it will stay silent because God doesn't give a damn about you.
1:16 RIP those 4 fingers & may they rest easy...
Lmaooo
I get it and I don't want to get it again.
Don’t get it...
Can someone explain?
@@Terrus_38 a picture of grey fingers came up like a dead person or whatever idk
The instrument and the music are beautiful. It was so very nice of you to offer this beautiful music to us. Thank you.
I need one of these. 😊 love it.
I first heard a zither 55 years ago when my then-best friend learned to play it. She taught herself that (we were both 15), and the autoharp, and was very good at both by the time we graduated high school.
We parted ways decades ago, so I don't know if she plays any longer, or if she's even alive. But I'll never forget the sounds she could produce on the zither---and Simon and Garfunkel were her favorite artists of the time, so she played a lot of their music.
Wow, really appreciate this. My Grandmother has and plays one of these.
Her first language is an old dialect of Low German that's increasingly dying out, and she's now in her 90's and suffering from dementia.
I feel like many of the old "common" ways of doing things in the world are getting lost and forgotten in the ever sweeping wave of modernization and progress. There's good in that of course, but we also lose something of ourselves along the way.
The sound of silence is a fitting tune to play on it. Thanks for playing and sharing it with all of us.
Yes, very evocative, I come from Germany and can remember buying the S&G original when it came out.. I'm trying to imagine your "Oma's" dialect, would be interesting to know where she's From.
My grandpa is low German as well. It’s a shame it’s disappearing
Everyone in my family speaks Low German
@@glede2097 please be sure to record them talking - about anything, really, just so other people can hear that dialect even when they are gone. I suggest doing this without them knowing that you're recording, which is how you get the most natural sound!
I did record my Dad talking with his childhood friend (neighbour's girl when they were small) in Frankfurt 1999, and now they both are gone. I'm happy to have their voices - in this case on MiniDisc, which should be quite a stable medium. Making safety copies is, of course, also good.
Weiss einer von euch Deutschen, wo man Saiten dafür kriegen kann ? (Ich hab' auch so'n Ding) Grüsse aus DK
The choral effect is just beautiful, echoes upon echoes.
Simon & Garfunkel created an eternal masterpiece. Perhaps the greatest thing I've ever heard.
The greatest anti-censorship song ever made
'Eternal masterpiece' - a very appropriate description indeed.
I believe that the timelessness of this song would have made
it be a hit whenever it was released.
De acuerdo ❤🌹
Simon and Garfunkle wrote timeless, haunting lyrics, but I think the tune is older.
Edit: I think I'm wrong about that! The tune was a Paul Simon original!
@@natquesenberry6368
Maybe you're thinking of "Scarborough Fair" which (IIRC) is a rendition of an English folk song ?
1:22, In loving memories of two fingers. We will never forget you. We will carry on your torch.
What that mean
@@anonymousdude2550 It's sarcasm, because the Background music and the fade in fade out transition plus black and white color makes it like commemorating a deceased.
@@Ravenoustoxic hmmm ok... Actually at first glance I thought that was sarcasm but I wanted to know more

Not many outside Bavaria and Austria seem to be aware of this great instrument. The sound is beautiful..
Use to be popular in the US too in the 60s and 70s - especially the folk scene
Folks over a certain age in Britain are familiar with its use throughout the classic old film The Third Man:
ua-cam.com/video/l64JIcG-O-k/v-deo.html
My grandma used to play the zither, she also often went to Bavaria in her holiday.
Her favorite song to play was from The third man. I have never seen the film, but i will keep her playing that song in mind, always.
Habe dere! and Greetings from south bavaria.
Koreans have the Gayageum and it also sounds really cool. Doesn't sound exactly like this but it is also a Zither
I have never seen this instrument before. It sounds amazing in the hands of this musician.
Precioso. Primera vez que escucho el sonido de una cítara. Gracias por compartir.
O nome desse instrumento é Cítara 😃👍.
As a guitar player,I can really appreciate the right hand technique. String skipping is muscle memory and takes a lot of practice Beautifully played.Bravo!😃👍
That sound was so beautiful and soulful - mellow, echoing, gentle and so, so heartbreaking.
It's the most beautiful version of " The Sound of Silence" I have ever heard.

We have similar musical instrument in India , called 'Santoor' . Your performances, the music, everything is just so soothing. Thanx. Love from India. 🇮🇳
Lots of countries have the same type of instrument as the santoor. In Europe it is called a hammered dulcimer, hackbrett, salterio, or cymbalom. In China it is called a yangqin, and in Korea yanggeum. The Middle East mostly calls it a santur.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls
In tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

I have never heard of this instrument before this video and I feel like I've been missing out all my life. Absolutely beautiful playing here!
Wow. Such a beautiful version! ✨
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs in modern times! It makes you feel the vibration of the silence within you!
There are so many amazing instruments in the world that the majority of people don't even know exist... Or have never heard their music
Magnificent ! The zither, the sound it produces and the artist playing it !
Listen to The Third Man. Great piece of music written for the zither!
A big Hello from Australia. Etienne (zither player).
I received a Zither at Christmas in the late 60's. I has fewer strings in the wider area. It has good sound. It came with music sheets to slide under the strings which were joined with lines at each note. You played the notes following the lines from left to right. I loved be able to play the few songs that I had, I even tried to make more sheets on my own. I have introduced many children to this intriging instruments over the years, 3 of my own. My son in very musical so he will be the next to keep it. I am going to research for tutorials.
Are you in Australia? So am I......near Canberra?

I'm 62 and my music teacher in grades 1- 5 had one of these. We all got to play it. Thanks for the memory. 🙂
When in a DOD elementary school in the South Pacific in the 1960’s Mr Krause played one of these when he was tired of our cacophony of third grade “music.” I don’t recall him being a virtuoso but he could play a recognizable tune. To this day I enjoy the sound of this instrument. Thanks for the video.
Beautiful music!!👏👏🌟🌺 Congratulations.
Fantastic. I thank this individual so much for taking the time to learn so well how to play this instrument. I had one in the 1970's and lacked the discipline to learn how to play it. I thought of buying an electronic zither or autoharp but didn't since I knew I'd lack the motivation to learn. (I also purchased 3 unused guitars over the decades. Now am 78.) Putting this on FB RIGHT NOW.
Хорошая песня, давно не слышала. Благодарю за ностальгию.
Paul Simon would be proud. This is gorgeous!
Simply the best I've ever heard on this kind of instrument. Thank you so much! Punctually now, in this time, today, I needed this old song, bc I'm very ill and don't have a lot of hope. This music made my whole week! Thank you so, so much!
