A very fun detox with some great reminders about time in our world vs. time in the secondary world! I will say David is underselling the Roman empire in terms of average person's personal freedoms, given most folks in it were not strictly like in gladiator and a lot of cities had people just doing their thing, not to mention all the rural land since even the cities of the era are not nearly what we think of them as today.
He fundamentally misses one thing though with the focus on political theory: people often act irrationally and as motivated purely by what they think is cool, and you can't logic someone out of a position they didn't logic themselves into in the first place. To sway someone you have to make the argument that appeals to them, not necessarily the argument that is the most morally or ideologically consistent.

Fun session, fun detox! Really interesting discussion about the Beastmen vs. the Goblins / Rome vs. "barbarians." But it is worth considering that the Beastmen as a Roman analogue is kind of a skin deep comparison. They have the trappings of Rome, but they're not an expansionary imperialist force (in fact, that's the Goblins!) The Beastmen so far have only been portrayed as a profoundly isolationist militia. They don't even seem to want to reconnect with the in-universe Rome (Archontea). Their only real similarities with imperial Rome have been their military culture and cult figurehead. Having said all that, I do agree it's kind of shortsighted to spill all your beans about something that happened literally a couple days ago with a faction that vociferously opposes you keeping your coolest magic item. Anyways, have a safe and happy holiday! Can't wait for the next one!

Byzantine is the better analogue than Roman, IMO, but that's a bit of a potayto potahto thing...

A discussion of political theory during the Detox… and I haven’t had my morning coffee yet. Heavy!😉

David is going to send the army of cats and the invisible stalker after Deyno. Mort is going to rule and convert all the Goblins to Thoth, Mike is going to ride an actual bolt of lighting, and Wolf is going to sit outside, in a folding chair, of AV yelling at others to get off his yawn!
Oh, Jon will still be playing the role of the cat.

First off, purrfect role playing on Jon's part! Second, I agree that there are some very interesting concepts here and I needed to watch twice to make sure I got it all. My biggest take away was David's point about the misalignment of the "game time" with "real life time" and its impact on what information the Club should be sharing. In real life, the Club discovered the aftermath of Neferet's attack on the beastmen in episode 85 which was posted on September 10th of 2024 (in case anyone is reading this way in the future...) and they returned to the chambers in episode 90 which was posted on November 12th of 2024. So it seems like a long time since the attack and the club's "cleaning out of the undead". In game time, I believe there was two nights of rest of elapsed time between the discovery and the return to chambers (Lothar had his "surgery" and there was a meeting with King Weskenim) and I believe we are later in the same between episode 90's action and episode 94's actions. In game time, the "Cliff Divers" have only been on the move for 48 hours or so. I am with David on keeping the information you have close to the vest. I appreciate the desire to have the LRCP as set of well trained henchmen but I am not sure you need to be quite as transparent as Ted wants to be. Thank you all for sharing your game with us. Wishing you all Happy and Safe Holidays and I am already looking forward to the new sessions in 2025!

Id say the way we focus on the freedom vs order thing is itself pretty modern. It seems very important to us because we're formally free in a way medieval and roman people generally were not, but we're also confronted by a state that is much more powerful and 'present' in our lives than most romans or medieval people.

Deyno is in mouse-form isn't she? Would be funny if one of your cat finds her...

D&D is a war game set in fantasy realms about power. Play 5e to have heckin good modern political opinions.

@@VisableVetetable I don't know, I think imagining the politics of these made up factions can be kind of fun. The problem with how thay happens in most modern culture is the obsession with identifying the 'right' and 'wrong' position

Power and it's applications are inherently a game of politics. Games like Diplomacy are played entirely without even rolling a die. I hardly think a discussion of ancient political structures as they apply to a fantasy world is "modern politics." Ironically OSE is much more suited to a game of politics than 5e which is all about fantasy-themed super powers getting into comic book fights.
