      And cancelling games, regardless of if they're licensed or not, is not something to cheer. That's work devs put into a game that will never be recognized, and is money flushed down the drain.
      Do I want more licensed games over new IPs? Hell no. I'd much prefer if they didn't even start working on a licensed game, and not cancel it so devs actually have the chance to release games they worked on.

    not minimizing the layoffs in the game industry because they're quite dire at the moment, but just scrolling down my linkedin, many of my highly skilled and hard working friends in tech and science and finance are being laid off.
    My point being, that I don't believe it to be because a "video game crash". I think worldwide, companies are realizing they can get away with destroying the lives of workers in favor of profits and stockholders. It is rather that in the gaming community, consumers are more aware of game developers being laid off than other tech and science fields.

      Yes. It is a world wide issue right now. Consumers aren't spending money and everyone is terrified of inflation. They all want to hoard money and put it into investments that aren't as affected by inflation, rather than spend it.

      @RariettyC 3 місяці тому +1

      @@MyNameIsSalo It's a self-fufilling prophecy that makes things worse for everyone, even those at the top. Corporations pay staff less and less when accounting for inflation --> staff cut back on spending --> less is spent on the unnecessary goods and services that those corporations sell. There's far too much hubris and short-term planning from executives for any of this to be sustainable, especially within entertainment industries that tend to be the first to be impacted when consumers cut back on spending. Unfortunately, the "safe" thing to do right now as a corporation is make and save as much as possible while it's still possible so there's enough of a cushion when the bubble bursts.

A poorly produced, AI-generated cash grab spectacle--that would be dead on its tracks and boo'd to heck... if it were not for the passionate and very real cast of actors that they hired who gave all that they could despite the dire circumstances of the event. Very reflective of the gaming and art industry these days.

    The biggest issue is that many of these now twenty thousand people or so that have been laid off since the whole thing started last year, will probably leave the industry for good. They have nowhere to go. When almost everyone is laying people off by the hundreds or thousands, no one can possibly hire enough to take in even a fraction of these people. They'll probably land in more traditional software development and never look back. And the signal this sends to aspiring game developers: don't even think about it. The implications of this coprorate greed for ever infinite growth will be felt for many years from now, and frankly the gaming industry already had a big problem with talent retention when almost everyone was exploiting their workers with poor working condition, crunch and bad pay.

      I'm celebrating the layoffs to be honest.
      AAA devs have been making nothing but crap for years and have given the worst and most entitled opinions towards things like Elden Ring, BG3, and other recent popular titles. While I'm sure plenty of the people getting layed off might be good at their jobs, the reality is the industry is extremely bloated and is using far too much on too little.
      If this allows for a restructuring of these companies towards smaller, more talented dev teams that make better games, then great. If it kills them completely, then also great. We have had no shortage of good games coming out recently and the employment of others doesn't come before the quality of the industry. The decline of the AAA scene is pushing the mainstream community towards smaller studios that really deserve the attention.
      IMO we are at the early stage of a gaming renaissance.

It really hit me hard, I barely function now at all, so I understand the severity of a lay off. But with that said, thats life, it happens all the time and I think Ralph overstates the tragedy of it. It is not a tragedy, it is just a lay off. I mean it is sad that it happens to people, but it happens, you getting a job does not mean you can rely on it forever, if you ever think that, you are stupid. People say that companies are rich to keep people, well, you do not become rich by wasting money, ever, that is not how successful people operate, if they feel they can afford losing employees, they will cut them. It is not a charity, sorry, its not. Losing job is usually not the end of the world or even close to that, if you are healthy and qualified. I honestly at this point sick of hearing of people treat industry lay offs as a tragedy of some kind, and I lost my job 37 days ago myself and am defeated myself. If the company is scaling down or canceling projects, there's nothing wrong with cutting jobs. You don't pay people just for the hell of it. Remember how Twitter cut many jobs yet the website works fine? There are probably many unnecessary jobs at EA. The CEO pay is irrelevant - that's the market rate for a company that big. Not everyone can be a CEO. You certainly couldn't if you'd squander money from a stock buyback on paying people just to keep them employed. EA probably hired too many people during the COVID boom and they're downscaling. It happens everywhere and it's not a moral issue, it's business.

    • @debroofgreen
      @debroofgreen 3 місяці тому

      I understand and my comment was unsympathetic to the toll on the fired workers. I wasn't seeing any comments which suggested that the layoffs might have been necessary though. I don't know if they were or it's just corporate greed, but many people made comments suggesting that it was done to give executives a raise or something like that. We can't know exactly why, so I hypothesized that the job cuts were done to stabilize the company as a whole so it can continues to employ the thousands of other workers.
      It's unrealistic to expect companies to only add jobs but lots of people think layoffs are automatically evil. The only jobs that have great security are public ones (which can be good or bad but that's a different discussion). I've been let go due to lack of work and I've terminated people. It sucks but most of the time it's not the end of the world Also, I doubt Skill Up or most other UA-camrs pay their team anywhere close to what they pay themselves. The channel owner usually takes home many times what even their full-time employees get. That's why I don't like the moral posturing about the huge executive salaries.
      It's naive of Skill Up to assume that companies that take in billions in profits can always afford to keep their employees at the current level, and it's possible that the ones who were laid off worked on games that he hated or that underperformed. Some people do deserve to be fired and sometimes a company just takes on fewer projects and has no use for all of its workers. Even companies that make billions still have to operate like a business. Some of those big companies aren't even profitable yet (like VC-backed ones). If Skill Up has any evidence of corporate malfeasance regarding the EA layoffs, then he can take the position he does. Pointing to execute salaries isn't sufficient evidence of wrongdoing, it only shows that they're getting paid the going rate for executive positions in such a big company. If Skill Up's channel took in a lot.less money, he'd have to fire his team members or cut their salaries/hours too. I think he was taking a cheap shot because he doesn't know how necessary the layoffs were..@@Michael_Lochlann

    Its not usual in VideoGames industry which was in a protected bublle, but in other parts of the work segmants, since 5 years and with the inflation, its hard to find jobs in "normal" segments.
    So Videogame industry, welcome to the real world where most of workers are in constant struggle to survive.

      The video game industry crashes before, probably before you were born. I don't know if you missed it, the industry is more profitable than ever but the greed of execs are what is driving the layoffs. Seek understanding before showing your ignorance and condescension for all to see.

      @@fourmoyle the videogame is more profitable means nothing as in "normal industry". Some a minor segment is very rich, the others struggle, the majority of them.
      And yes they were in a bublle, the fact is theyre impacted as others workers in other sectors. Take2 and EA have a lot of money as Microsoft but the rest struggle to maintain profit. As in the real world 10 companies are very very rich when 1000 others struggle.
      Youre videogames are very profitable means nothing in real numbers. Your point is like the financials in game Cie seeing Fortnite numbers and saying Game as a Service are very profitable....

      @Michael_LochlannMy point is to not forget the majority of people working in all the other segments, who has been in crisys since the covid; and noone think of them, it will be nice when noticing the recent layoffs to relate the general economic recession for all workers. This segment (videogame industry) has been protected for decades. So i didnt say rejoice, but take a step back. The writing were on the walls.

      There’s more to it than that: some of the employers have said some racist and prejudiced things in tweets about white people and deleted them recently, but they were still spotted. For a sensitivity writer to have those views is concerning.
      They tried to get a steam page and user harassed and cancelled for posting a list of their games, then it backfired.
      The CEO admitted in a presentation that threatening is a good way to get business if you are not listened to.
      A developer said they didn’t have much input in Suicide Squd but then social media messages from a SBI employer surfaced where he said that he was proud for much of the writing for a lot of the script and dialogue and they hired more writers for the game.
      As to the unrelated matter of GOWR you brought up. Personally, if I’m watching a movie or playing a game based on African, Chinese or Indian mythology and just one of the Gods or deities is a young white woman it’s going to break immersion and be jarring. Yes, even fantasies need logical world building consistency.
      Similarly, in a Norse mythology it is worth commenting that the only reason for the inclusion is diversity where none was needed and not present in the first game. It’s not a big deal and the actress did a good job, but it’s worth criticizing.
      The other games you brought up have different contexts, but you are in danger of projecting reasons and misrepresenting a whole host of complaints.
      Having said all that - it’s not a catastrophe or main news, just silly drama that we are wasting our time on and will forget about soon as we carry on with our lives.
