  • You might think you know all about the run-pass option and the spread offense in college football, but chances are you're not quite as familiar with the concepts as former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. He breaks down everything you need to know about the RPO ahead of Week 1 of the 2019 CFB season on BIG NOON KICKOFF.

    It's about time the networks learned this is the content people want. Whether it's Romo in the booth, Baldy Breakdowns, Peyton Manning breaking down plays, etc, this is where it's at.

      Well with sports in general their commentary has always been about attracting new fans, not retaining the ritualised old ones. In terms of football coverage guess who it is generally aimed at? Rhymes with swimming...
      Yes that's right marking out where the line of scrimmage is, forever explaining the rules and letting you know a million times that Edelman was a QB in high school lol. All for attracting women to the game as it already does an amazing job of retaining men. The pretty presentation and screen graphics for breaking down plays none of it is aimed at you as a man...

      No.. More like Alex Smith adapted and improvised in the moment, Urban and Dan Mullen had the reaction of why the hell has no one ever thought of this before, and ran with it. A couple years later two lads by the names of Tebow and Leak decimated Ohio State's Tresselball defense with it. I still to this day think of that the National Championship game as Urban Meyer's unofficial interview for the Ohio State job.

    I started cheering, hoping he would. I know that the AD at OSU was probably also cheering. I don't know how the hiring came about, but I suspect that a year later, when in search of a new coach, Urban was probably the first, and only call. I'm sure that Urban asked his wife and family. They obviously approved.

      @MickeyKraut419 5 років тому

      @@rogerhoke9725 The thing is that Harbaugh is fully capable of becoming an Elite coach. IMO, he's just too damned stubborn and competitive for his own good. He wants to bury teams with a two TE/ TE FB power running game and set up play action off of it. He loves winning inside his box more than winning itself. That is his problem. Elite coaches like Meyer and Saban, great coaches like James Franklin and Brian Kelly, and even good like Dantonio, Kirk Ferentz and Pat Fitzgerald know this of him. They know how to exploit it and plan for TTUN accordingly to make the effort to force him to have to play outside that box. I hate to say this cause I do think Harbaugh is the best available coach TTUN can have in the forseeable future, and I want The Game to be an impactful and very meaningful rivalry every year on a national level, but this could very well be a hotseat year for Harbaugh. I think in the least he needs to beat both Ohio State and Penn State, and needs to really beat Notre Dame and Sparty as well... If he doesn't, they have no chance of winning the conference and competing for a spot in the playoff... That is the standard at Ohio St, at TTUN, to win The Game, win the Conference and compete for the National title. He's in his 5th year now... it's time to produce or admit he must address the shortcomings or be canned.

    I do disagree with coach Urban Meyer in terms of his interpretation of "equating numbers." Coach Meyer points out that 5 Defensive Backs will often be used to cover 4 Wide Receivers. I agree with this, because it is correct. However, Coach Meyer than points out this leaves the Defense with 6 other Players - usually 4 Defensive Linemen and two Linebackers. Coach Meyer claims this gives the Defense and advantage over the Offense in terms of "numbers," because the Offense has only 5 Offensive Linemen to block the 6 Defensive players in "the box" (a term Coach Meyer did not use). But, I disagree with this. I will explain why.
    The Offense has two other players - a RB and a QB. The RB can be used as a Blocker or a a Faker. The QB can also be used as a Blocker or a Faker. Or even better than a "Block" where the QB has no chance of effectively blocking a large DE or LB, the QB can force the Defensive Player to "tackle" him before "Pitching" the ball. In that scenario, there is a 1:1 ratio of "equating" numbers between the Offense and Defense.
    Also, the Offense knows exactly where the ball is going. And there are "quick-hitting" plays such as Inside Traps to the Fullback where it isn't even necessary to block "outside" Defensive Linemen such as the Defensive End. In that scenario, the Offense can actually end up with a greater number of "equated" Blockers when compared to the Defense and potential "Tacklers."
    A good example is the way Nebraska and coach Tom Osborne would often run a play where the QB ran down the line towards the DE. The DE on the playside was intentionally never blocked, because the play was designed to "look like" an "Option," when in reality it was intended to be a pitch to the Tailback all along. The QB would simply go down the line until the DE committed to tackling him (which is BETTER than a Block), and then pitched the ball to the TB. The FB was blocking for the TB as a lead blocker. And the backside DE was never blocked at all, because the backside DE had no chance of being a potential tackler on the play.
    Another good example is the way a team can use a quick-hitting Trap play to the FB. The Center can block the one DT, the Guard can block the Middle LB, and the other Guard can pull and block the other DT. The ball will be "handed" to the FB and the QB will then continue to "Fake" the Option with the TB. Neither the backside DE or the playside DE is blocked, because the FB reaches the line of scrimmage before either of them could reach the ballcarrier. The Tight End simply focuses on blocking one of the Defensive Backs.
    In those types of scenarios, the Offense has a BIG advantage over the Defense. This is why the Single Wing Offense was so effective for such a long time. Even something as simple as the QB taking the snap and having everyone else out in front of him blocking would produce these advantageous numbers at the point of attack.
    In the NFL and most college teams that run a "Pro-Style" Offense, there is no doubt Coach Urban Meyer is correct, though. After all, those teams simply have the QB hand the ball off to the QB while the QB runs off and does nothing in order to avoid injury. This essentially means it is 11 potential Defensive Tacklers vs 9 Offensive Blockers.

    As a Notre dame fan i'll admit last year's ohio state could have won the title if in playoff. 2 years in a row 1 lopsided loss cost them a spot. I know Michigan had some key defenders out, but man they destroyed the wolverines. By chance I tuned in to watch them play purdue and lose 49-20. The D never adjusted to speed motion. It was just one of those games where ohio state really went up and down the field on purdue. It was just everything went wrong in red zone. That happens! Alabama had same thing happen to them against Clemson. Bama gained a lot yards it was just one of those games where things didn't go right in red zone. That can happen to any team on a given day. Buckeyes had the athletes to score against Clemson if they had played each other. Not many others do have that capability. Anyone agree?
