Ever since I uploaded the Madoka Magica Soundtrack Medley in 2014, I've always wanted to arrange the Opening song "Connect" for the piano as well. Probably one of the most iconic songs of the Madoka franchise, this song has been covered in different ways by many pianists on UA-cam already. And finally, the time has come for me to create a piano cover as well with my own arrangement style.
My focus for this arrangement is to keep the upbeat rhythm alive and to make use of differentiated voicing for the entire duration. I have been using more "three hand technique" (left hand is playing the main melody, while right hand is playing a secondary pattern) than usual for this arrangement because I wanted to create a more orchestral feeling for this piece.
For the second verse in 1:42 I have created a "duet" voicing again (similar to my earlier upload "History Maker"), where both the left hand and right hand are playing the main melody. I was imagining Homura and Madoka communicating with each other in this moment.
The most difficult part for me to arrange was actually the bridge part starting at 02:47, because there are so many different ways to arrange it and it was difficult for me to decide on one specific pattern. I was experimenting with a lot of different rhythm patterns until I find a good musical balance for this "drummer solo" part.
I was also thinking what to do for the final chorus, the climax of the entire song. Since Madoka is ultimately telling you a story of tragedy, I let the music stop for a moment in 03:47 to give it a moment of silence. The chorus melody is played in the highest register possible to give the listener a feeling of loneliness - and yet, faint hope at the same time.
With that said, I honestly can't believe it's been almost 9 years since Madoka Magica has aired. I still remember I was fanboying really hard about Madoka, because of how unpredictable the story was, and how it defied all the stereotypes of your usual Magical girl genre. Essentially, the "dark magical girl" Anime genre was born in 2011. Mami's missing head memes went viral, lengthy philosophical essays about entropy were written and Kyubey became the embodiment of a evil mascot character. Madoka really changed the landscape of Anime back then.

Connect has been on my to-do-list since Madoka Magica has finished airing in 2011, but back then I didn't know how to arrange it with a balanced orchestral sound. I have been putting this piano cover on hold since then and waited, until I was confident enough with my piano arranging level.
9 years later, I finally gave it another chance and made a piano cover with my current arrangement style. It was a long journey but I am glad I could use all the experience I have gained in the past years.

tbh the bass gliss detracts from the music, to me it sounded out of place and too loud like a vacumm suddenly going off in the background

Arrangement thoughts:
Silence is golden, and that's what stood out most for me on this one. Definitely noticeably felt more pauses than I usually hear in an Animenz piece. The silences and the soft spots where the piece was able to "breathe" a little felt like the hesitations made by the magical girls when presented the choice to commit even deeper on their forsaken path.
I was pleasantly surprised at the "twirling" pattern used in the 2nd pre-chorus (as expressed during live chat) starting at 2:05. It came out of the blue like the twirl of a magical wand. My other favorite part of this arrangement was the sparkling high register passage at 3:53. Also, the call and responses + gliss entrance to the final chorus (4:08) was a ~funky~ twist and deserves an honorable mention.
Sidenote: I actually finished a sheet for this piece several years ago, but never got around to properly recording it. This is first Animenz cover in a long while where I've come in already having my own preconceived piano arrangement thoughts in my head. That made this particular arrangement even more fun to listen to and hear unexpected patterns, vs coming in cold like usual.
If i were to point out one or two things, the bridge maybe could've used a little more ornamental/climactic oomph to serve as a contrast the following soft passage. A few of the pickup scale runs in the main melody lines (e.g. 0:20) also felt a little mushed together. But I'll leave it at that to avoid letting my nitpicky arranger bias get in the way. These are quite small compared to how much I enjoyed the rest of it. :). Having stylistic differences is what makes listening to different arrangements fun!

Thanks for your feedback as usual, zengarang! I do agree with the rushed pickup scale runs in 0:20 (and in 4:27 as well) btw: I think with each recording attempt they are getting faster and faster until they became like this, haha. They used to be normal speed sixteenth notes in the beginning

Well this comment pretty much puts together what I thought while listening but I'm still gonna leave a few things I thought might be worth mentioning ... ?
1) When I head the first arpeggio around 2:04 I really liked it but keeping it there for the whole cord--same rhythm and all--really felt like to me like a massive lost opportunity to add some variety. Even if it was similar arpeggios, playing around with the timing (more?) would've definitely made that pre-chorus more interesting for me.
2) The left hand pattern for the first and second chorus felt a bit too (for lack of a better word) bouncy, and using it for both chorus 1&2 felt, well, maybe a bit cheesy? That's how it felt to me at least... The chorus in this song already has a fairly strong rhythmic component with the offbeat hits (on 'itsumo mattete'). So for the other parts of the chorus I think I would've liked a more legato feeling, even if it was only for one of the 2 first choruses maybe? :)
Well that's just what I thought anyways...
That being said I think this is one of Animenz's best arrangements in a while and was so much fun to listen to I couldn't help but smile. I really liked the transition to chorus at 2:24, the C-part and transition to the last chorus was very well balanced, not too loud but it had a nice amount of drive to it. And after that, well the rhythm at 4:12 really surprised me and from there to the end was really amazing. I could probably write an essay on the things I liked about the last minute (the melody line on 4:14 that somehow hits *just right* and the repeated rising chords at 4:40, amongst other things...) but well, yeah, all in all a really great arrangement.

I started watching anime about seven years ago, and Madoka Magica was an early favorite of mine that Blew My Mind, and when the medley was put out, I started listening to it on repeat for MONTHS, alongside My Dearest. This song also means so much to me as I really hooked up with Madoka anime at that time, I like all about it especially the songs and soundtrack. But that was the second time I love Kajiura-san's work since the first work of her that I like was Pandora Hearts soundtrack.

This got me to revisit Madoka Magica after stopping at episode 3, 4 years ago. I'm glad it did! Beautiful arrangement Animenz; my mom asked if there was accompanying instrumentation to your piano because the arrangement is so vibrant and colorful.

Sometimes when I wanna quit to play piano I watch so many of your videos and remember that I wanna put as many feelings and deepness into your arrangements as you. I play the piano for 10 years now and am able to play your arrangements since 3 years ago but I feel like I never really brought in enough deepness into everything, which frustrates me A LOT. But I won't give up. I want to be able to reach people. I want people to listen to me playing the piano without telling me that "you should play songs which are popular. Nobody understands this!" because I still don't play good enough. I want to be able to express my on emotions by playing the piano instead of playing without giving off any vibes. This is a very special song for me. This is the first ever anime song on piano I heard and it brought me to this ACG piano world. I’ve played some piano version on random anime songs in the past but never really addicted until this song. It was played by marasy8. Great to see Animenz arranged it finally!!
