At this point Disney feels like the "Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing" meme. Of course it's not true, they're ramping up production and doing more than ever, but when this is your competition, you don't *need* to try.
Yeah. Their two biggest competitors trying their own superhero shared cinematic universe are a flailing Warner Brothers with their mess of... *gestures broadly* everything, and Sony with a Spider-Man universe that doesn't actually have a Spider-Man, whose biggest claim to fame is allowing Disney to use Spider-Man to make much better movies in their own universe, and inadvertently turning a terrible Morbius movie into one of the biggest internet memes of the year. As someone who paid attention to like 1% of this B's and was done after that, I give you a lot of props for sticking with it. I hope whatever video you make next is more fun to make for ya.
I get the feeling that I and Bob were not the only ones who needed this video. Also, Zaslav is the one who is responsible for turning Discovery into what it is now, and Honey BooBoo and The Duggars were his legacy? Yeah, now I really needed this video.
Bob: "The best thing that could happen to Warner-Discovery is for the whole thing to collapse to the ground and for some other entity to take over all of this shit." Disney: "We agree!"
Everyone will be courting the talent when this goes up in flames. Disney has the security. Amazon prime has cash. And Netflix is desperate. Even peacock will be like "I'm not popular but I will let you do things that make us both blush."
Yeah, Bob must be sure he's safe to criticize Ezra Miller now. It has been for quite a while of course, but I mean even in Bob's circles. Now people in the reactions don't have to keep up appearences anymore either as was done with the last video. Congrats on 450 Bob! Glad the Flashpoint episode is finally out and we can hopefully we can move forward without that particular sword hanging over your head. Here's to another 450!
It’s always difficult talking about these Far Right Geek commentators. Because they make a business on hypothetical “cancel culture” and then claim victory when it doesn’t happen, here is an example: “Since Female Thor we will never see Chris Hemsworth as Thor“ Then they announce Chris Hemsworth will be in the next Avengers movie and they’ll say “See we won against wokeness”. Even though it has nothing to do with them.
Stellar work as always Bob. Glad you can finally put this one behind you. Looking forward to the next 450 episodes of consistently the best written and reasoned genre film analysis on the Internet. Keep up the good fight, Bob. I'm here for it!
I'm honestly sick of media executive BS, and whiny idiots on the internet but there's nothing we can do about it other than sit and stew in our rage, it seems. (Also, happy 450th episode Bob!)
Congratulations! Discovery+ - Honestly, we've been through this a couple of times before. When MTV went all in on reality programming and basically vanished from cable. Again with Cartoon Network ditching animation for game shows. That nearly sunk the whole animation department if not for Adventure Time and Steven Universe. I give it 18 months. As 2025 rolls around, Zaslav will be looking to sell, but runs into the same problem. No buyers. Anyone with that money has stake in Disney or QuestStar or something somewhere else. And it has too much IP to sell it at bargain basement prices which is how he picked it up because AT&T got sticker shock. (And galaxy-brain move AT&T. You spend ten years capturing agencies and breaking regulations and you never asked if you might be good at the thing you want so badly. I'm sure there's a Casino clip that could illustrate that.) Zaslav will get his time to pretend he's a big shot studio head. Get bored with it and sell it for parts with the biggest chunks going to some Chinese firm. (If the evergardens don't tank their balance sheets) The one good thing that can come out of it is restructuring WB. WB is a hoarder's nest of IP and studios that keep getting acquired but can't bring themselves to close or combine into other departments. While cancelling the CW, TBS and TNT shows seemed overkill. Why couldn't all of this be folded into ONE TNT with the remaining shows? Instead of two channels cycling through Family Guy and American Dad on the weekdays and Harry Potter and MCU movies on the weekends. I'm sorry folks who could have used that break won't get it. Yeah they got paid, but this was shot in a industry where you have to scrap and bleed just to get one and you aren't guaranteed another. I can only respond to such cruel indifference with sympathy. I hope everyone involve lands on the feet and hopefully in a better spot.
@@kylebookout1789 Maybe I am completely wrong, but I do feel, him scooping up Alan Horn shows intent that he might end up failing but that Zaslav does want WB and more importantly DC to succeed and be able to give the audience both the Marvel experience of a connected universe. But do something Marvel will never do, which is creating things like The Batman or Joker (not a die hard fan of the movie like so many seems to be, but I like that they did dare take a risk on it, hoping Joker 2 will be more up my alley). Obviously the 10 year plan thing could end up failing if they don't get the right people for the job, Berlanti is the only person I can think of that should get the position of being their Feige. He might not always have been able to have the shows be consitently past the first 3-4 seasons, but considering the amount of money he had to work with. The constant restriction on characters, where he would actually trick WB into letting him use certain characters by using characters with ties to other characters making WB cave in. Crisis on Infinite Earths might have been a mess, although partly because he at that point from all account had checked out and had lost his nr 2 after Kreisberg turned out to be a creep. So their complete universe bible was dead since the new people on Flash was not able to do as good of a job as Kreisberg and season 6 onwards have been a dumpster fire. Last time Berlanti actually truly worked on a project was Crisis on Earth X, which is a better Justice League movie, on 10 times smaller budget than the actual Justice League movie that came out the same week. Give him the Feige role with zero restrictions and as someone who understands the business, loves the characters and has proven he can make D-list characters more famous than many A-list characters. I'd love to see what he could do with the key to the entire toy box. If they were smart they would also get Greg Weismann to help them create a complete story bible. He really knows how to juggle everything from street level characters to literal god characters and make it feel equally important.
If Cartoon Network never hired Stewart Snyder after the 'Aqua Teen'/Boston fiasco, or if the writer's strike never happened, we never would've had to endure the dreaded CN Real period, or that awful 'Re-Animated/Out Of Jimmy's Head' crap would never have been green lit. Also, if Cartoon Network had shows that weren't on either side of the extremes as 'Teen Titans Go', or 'Steven Universe', there wouldn't be this huge divide amongst viewers.
@@Launchpad05 -- The reason the writer's strike happened is because studios wanted to cut writers out of the profits of streaming. The same way they did with VHS and DVD sales. It still comes back to the major studios being greedy.

They went back on everything, catered to the culture warriors; And The culture warriors still hated it, but were laughing that the fans of the previous one couldn’t have the movie they were set up for. The studio appealed to the culture warriors, and the culture warriors went “lol your movie still sucks, but now the SJWs hate you too!” They are troll poser fans. The next logical step is for Disney to buy Warner Bros (Disney+ had a Discovery/Hulu bundle at one point) so Phase Six turns into Marvel vs. DC and the whole thing ends with an Amalgam movie.
Congrats on the nice big round number, Bob! 😀 Mainly what I can't wrap my head around about the whole Zaslav situation is how a raging misogynist (anyone familiar with 19 Lives And Counting wasn't surprised by how little of a crap he gave about Batgirl) with outrageously regressive and, might I add, _really freaking stupid_ attitudes regarding animation and episodic TV in general was allowed to become the head of a major film studio in the first place. I thought we were _done_ with the whole giving eye-gouging amounts of wealth and power to the biggest piles of crap on the planet thing. Here's the the thing you gotta understand: Whenever you put a morally bankrupt scumbag in charge, EVERYONE ELSE loses, and that's exactly what happening here. Actors, writers, directors, effects crew, and everyone around them got shafted and are going to worry bigtime about their futures, viewers miss out on highly-anticipated releases, the corporates who put the man into power in the first place are going to be under an entire fort's worth of guns, and the shareholders are going to get increasingly vocal about how the company's finances are tanking harder than Bitcoin. Pretty much the only ones celebrating are the eternally insufferable Synderbros... at least until Zaslav says "Vhat eez deez 'Sah-nai-dah-vuhzz'?" and absolute jack-all continues to happen on that front. It's a damned pathetic state of affairs, and all because a group of hopelessly out-of-touch men who refuse to accept that in the year two thousand and twenty-two, "Get woke, go broke" is missing an "or". And boy, if you thought Disney/Marvel was taking a boot to your butts before, get ready, because they're about to upgrade to a freight train. (And no, I'm not happy about this.)

We're going to have to watch possibly the most historic studio, one that's a CENTURY old, be absolutely gutted by one truly shitty guy who has no business being in this business, much less in the position he holds. I think the problems with the MCU right now are kind of overblown (and honestly a lot of people are looking back at the previous three phases with rose-colored glasses and it's always had problems) but I can't deny there's something that seems to be missing.
@@einootspork I agree there were always stinkers in the first 2 phases, especially the first 2 Thor movies, but I also don't have any nostalgia (or much memory at all) of the Iron Man movies. Thank you Bob, for showcasing and digesting all of this madness in an entertaining way so that we can keep a safe distance from it.

Yeah, Bob must be sure he's safe to criticize Ezra Miller now. It has been for quite a while of course, but I mean even in Bob's circles.
Now people in the reactions don't have to keep up appearences anymore either as was done with the last video.
I don't blame Zack Snyder though, how could he know that he not only cast a borderline and hystrionic violent woman with Amber Heard, but with Ezra "Kevin" Miller a sociopath who is on track to become the next Charles Manson 😄
Hearing Bob say "Honey Boo Boo" is satisfying in a way I can't really put my finger on
'Honey Boo Boo' is one thing I I will hold against David Zaslav for.
I thought the same thing when I heard about all the cuts. "Wait Discovery Channel? Isn't that all just Honey Boo Boo and Naked and Afraid now? THIS is who's in charge of all of this amazing IP? Yikes"
Did you know that DC is having a Crisis event right now.

The irony is that applies to both comics and real life.
As a DC fan I'm pretty much resigned to being mad for the rest of my life. Some of the comic runs will be good for a while until they screw the continuity again.

And happy 450th episode. Here's to all the years you been hear and many more
It’s cool that the video representing a massive weight off your shoulders is about this news that just capstones several plagues on our media, your job, and the era we live in. And coincidentally, it’s ALSO this giant capstone! It’s like it was all fated. This entire episode could serve as a basis for a whole video essay. We are living through god-damn interesting times, and I feel privileged to have been able to hear you, Bob.
This was cathartic in a lot of ways. I can't wait to see what the Big Picture brings in the future.
Congrats on 450 Bob! Glad the Flashpoint episode is finally out and we can hopefully we can move forward without that particular sword hanging over your head. Here's to another 450!
It’s always difficult talking about these Far Right Geek commentators. Because they make a business on hypothetical “cancel culture” and then claim victory when it doesn’t happen, here is an example:
“Since Female Thor we will never see Chris Hemsworth as Thor“
Then they announce Chris Hemsworth will be in the next Avengers movie and they’ll say “See we won against wokeness”.
Even though it has nothing to do with them.
There's a reason I call them a cult.

(If the evergardens don't tank their balance sheets)
The one good thing that can come out of it is restructuring WB.
Great comment!
@@Grizabeebles Just like networks execs want to go all in on reality television to avoid having to finance cartoons, or scripted shows. Again, studios, and networks being greedy.

And it turns out the new management didn't like those movies either, so the bros who were cheering Zaslav on just got screwed.
Glad to watch this Bob! What a wonderful way to put this to rest and celebrate a great series. Congratulations.
How can they complain about woke material when DC's Legends of Tomarrow was hands down the best content of the Arrowverse and a contender for some of the best DC content period?
They are just clout chasing. A broadcast tv series doesn't get nearly as much attention as a big-budget movie.
I suspect the people complaining about DC being "too woke" probably *hate* Legends for being too light hearted, rather than being grimdark edgewood bait.
The idiots who like the Snyderverse are exactly the same people who would have loved Honey Booboo, so they're probably happy as punch.
It's actually mostly women who are the target audience for those reality shows.

9:45 Gods, do I feel that one. I have been screaming in vain for months that in the ongoing WB/DC trainwreck, THERE ARE NO GOOD GUYS.
Nah. It's just that what "good guys" there are, they're powerless victims.
@@christopherb501 In that category, I would only put Ray Fisher. The guys at the top or near it? Nuh uh, not a one.
@@johnathonhaney8291 The people involved with the cancelled movies don't count?
@@christopherb501 Did you not hear me? I said "at the top or near it", which basically covers everyone on the executive level and, sorry to say, Snyder too. Your "hopeless victims" are just that and nothing more..."good guys" implies that they ever fought or even had a chance to. Snyder's way of "fighting back" made him just as bad.
Anyone shocked that these people falling in line behind "Honey Boo-Boo Guy" are acting so dumb and hypocritical? Aren't those kinds of people the same kinds of people who made the over-edited reality garbage so popular on TLC, Discovery, and History in the first place? Maybe I can thank him for Forged in Fire, but that seems like not enough benefit to cost ratio.
Ain’t That the Truth! At least “Forged in Fire” was actually a solid idea when we wanted abit more blood and sport to go with the history channel.
But Jesus, this is just depressing.
Saying that WB is poorly managed and actively tries to rush, tank and ruin almost any project and IP it has is an astounding understatement.
So basically Disney/Marvel got rid of their right-wing executive (what was his name again?) to finally put more diversity in the MCU, while Warner/DC does the opposite and puts a right-wing executive in charge to take out the diversity. Cut in Tony Stark saying "Not a great plan."

No they did not cater to those losers, that's a bunch of bullshit. Bob himself said ROS didn't do that.
The next logical step is for Disney to buy Warner Bros (Disney+ had a Discovery/Hulu bundle at one point) so Phase Six turns into Marvel vs. DC and the whole thing ends with an Amalgam movie.
Congrats on the nice big round number, Bob! 😀
Mainly what I can't wrap my head around about the whole Zaslav situation is how a raging misogynist (anyone familiar with 19 Lives And Counting wasn't surprised by how little of a crap he gave about Batgirl) with outrageously regressive and, might I add, _really freaking stupid_ attitudes regarding animation and episodic TV in general was allowed to become the head of a major film studio in the first place.

Right there with ya, Bob.
