  • This video was filmed from Easyjet Airbus A320 G-EJCH on 23/03/2024.
Akureyri airport is located in the north of Iceland. It has a 2400m runway (01 from the south and 19 form the north).
The terminal and apron is quite small, but a new terminal extension has just opened.
Flights include regular Icelandair Dash 8 flights from Reykjavík and Norlandair Twin Otter flights to Greenland, Vopnafjörður and Þórshöfn. Easyjet run scheduled flights in the winter (to bring tourists in and for locals to get out and visit the UK). Edelweiss fly a few flights per month over the summer from Zurich and Transavia run seasonal charters. There are betweThen 4 and 7 scheduled arrivals / departures today, as well as GW movements.
The approach to runway 01 is spectacular. There is an ILS option, with steep 5.3 degree glideslope. A shallower approach is possible via a more challenging and unique displaced localiser approach, which is what we appeared to do.
Aircraft drop into a U-shaped glacial valley with mountains either side. The hanging valleys in these mountains can channel cross winds.
From the left side of the aircraft, you see Torfnahnjúkur, Tungnafjall and Torfufell. The F821 Eyjafjarðarleið mountain road runs down the Eyjafjarðardal valley, next to the Eyjafjarðará river. Hólavatn lake can be seen as another valley joins, with Tröllshöfði mountain in the background. At this point, the aircraft is descending to a displaced localiser, not to the actual runway. From what I can understand, at a specific point, Akureyri tower uses their radar to identify the approaching aircraft, then instructs it to make the left turn to line up with the runway. This is approx by the village of Kristnes, which is only 4 miles out from the airport. A visual approach continues from this point.

It always amazes me how badly people pronounce the name of our town 😁

@@dr.chrisketo7193 My point was that Akureyri has an offset localiser with tower using radar to supervise after the incoming aircraft has turned off this (I think). There is also a 5.3 degree ILS. I was trying to work out which option we had used. So Akureyri is definitely non standard on several respects.
