Yea good video. Recently did this in mine before converting. If your house is older and some of the old beams aren't perfectly straight be prepared for some potential ceiling cracks and plaster pops below. The new timbers pull the old ones straight and the pressure can cause cracks. But all good.

Another option that I used was to put joist hangers on the original BIG heafty timber , you can see one in this video to the left of the mans feet , another would be in front of him out of shot . In my case I then put 6 by 2 joists in on the hangers , so that the floor was not bearing on the ceiling at all . And zero ceiling cracks in the rooms below as a result .

Hey. Many thanks for the vid! Lots of good info on the comments too. I have a couple of questions. What kind of screws do you use? (I know the 8x2 bit) but are they gallvanized, deck screws? what type? also Do you pre-drill holes for the screws or you just screw right into the new cls? Finally... By keeping the new timber 400mm apart you can use the standard floor boards which if I recall correctly are 1.2mts without having to cut them (except on tight corners and else)? Is that a fair assumption?

Hi I know this is an older video. I'm looking at a flat loft so quite large, just as a space, so no toilet or other reg stuff. I'm interested in the cross bracing, if existing older joists are usually 4x2 or 5x2. Without sliding in new 8x2 along side the old ones to bring it up to spec for an actual live in space, I've seen it being done by gluing a 2x2 or 3x2 on top of the joists and screwing at set spacings passed by architects. Does this counter bracing basically do the same or spread the weight over many joists or is it just to create more space for more insulation?

Hi. How do you get around the wiring for the downstairs lighting.

    • @user-qi5vj9zy9t

The wiring has room to run under new timbers . And where they run over existing timbers they can be moved to suit 👍

Definitely timber, use 4 inch cls running cross ways to the original joists, put back insulation and board over - would not recommend loft stilts in any format.
