  • This video shows you how to tie a formal obi - a fukuro obi (袋帯) - for your formal kimono. This obi musubi is called "nijudaiko (二重太鼓)". Its construction can be very confusing, so I have explained its construction clearly while showing how to tie a nijudaiko on the front and on the back.

Back in the 2000s, UA-cam was just about cat videos and silly things like that. No kimono tutorials yet. So I printed out a picture tutorial of how to tie this and practiced tying it on a teddy bear using long fabric belts, my brother's ties, any long fabric. I now find it easier to tie this on someone else than on myself. LOL!

It *is* easier to tie it on someone else, because you also don’t need any ties and can skip so many steps, but that fact won’t help you when you have to dress yourself 😉

I just got a fukuro obi that is about 120 years old and in learning how to tie it! It has beautiful gold and silver embroidery

That combo of the peach colour in the kimono and the silver of the obi is divine.

So what you are saying is practice, practice, practice? I joke, but this is gorgeous and thank you for sharing.

Everything about this kimono outfit is gorgeous! But I’m particularly fond of the little blue and pink pom-poms on the ends of the obijime! ☺️
Your instructions are always so straightforward and easy to understand, thank you for making kitsuke knowledge available to English speaking audiences! ❤️

Not only is the video very useful and wonderfully explained, a real pleasure to watch even if you don't have a kimono, but the whole outfit, the colors and patterns are a magical combination that goes perfectly with the new hair color. Just perfection!

Great video! I would love to see a video talking about musubi that were popular in history or historical musubi that are now uncommon today!

Thank you for this tutorial!! It really gives a great insight to what is happening, I've always made it work but it causes bumpiness and my musubi tends to unravel. I never understood how the obi age sat under all the layers either.

Yay! I've been waiting for a few years for you to do a tutorial for a formal/fukuro obi! I'm going to be getting out my fukuro obi and my furisode kimono 👘 and trying it out! I'll post a picture on Instagram and tag you so you can see it once I get it. You'll love my obi.

I was following along nicely and then came the part where you started to tie things on your back. I am gonna need a lot of practice.
Edit: I did it! I played it on .5 speed and it came great! I had to use different colored ties so I didn’t get confused 😝

Oh Gosh you're a great teacher (and a VERY stylish one). I can't wait for when I have ALL the components, and have practised a little, to then book in a video session with you. Oh patience can be a hard/boring/frustrating/tedious thing 😆😆😆

Can you do a video on how to deal with a large chest size. I have a 40+ chest and it totally changed the lines of my kimono. Normal kimono bras are too small and not supportive. I actually wear a compression shirt which is a bit uncomfortable but I’m not sure what else to do. And padding to smooth out curves don’t always work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🥹

Could you do a video on how to dress if you are invited to a wedding in Japan ?(e.g. is there anything you need to know regarding colours or patterns, hairstyles, accessories?) I had a chat with my best friend about the dress code for her wedding later on this/next year and we were talking about kimono, which would be amazing but also I never wore a kimono when I lived in Japan and have no clue about any rules etc ^^'

What is the width of an obi 30 cm? I was trying to figure the amount of length I would need for an obi 50 inches x2 est 250 cm+ the tade length + the drum roll = As a guess the tade needs 1 meter and the drum roll needs 2 meters My guess is 5.5 meters.

This is stupidly complicated xp but the end result looks so pretty and put together. Tbh, i cut my obi in parts and sewed it together that it would look kinda similar but without the trouble xp
