Hush puppy, the shoe brand, came from the fact that American slang often referred to feet as “dogs” and sometimes “puppies. In old movies you often hear someone whose feet are sore or tired say “ooh, my dogs are screaming!”. The shoe manufacturer used the name “Hushpuppy” to convey the idea of extraordinary comfort of the shoe for the feet.
Frybread! A staple among us Indigenous (Native) Americans dating back to when the US government took our land and forced us on reservations and didn't allow us to leave or even hunt without permission. They gave us food rations and from there, everyone started making frybread. Today, any traditional meal will usually include frybread. We also use it now to make Indian Tacos (Frybread with taco toppings).
Yep. I am CHEROKEE NATIVE.
Read about CHEROKEE and Trail of Tears. They took our homes from the Carolinas to
OKLAHOMA!!!!😶
I live in Butte County in California and yes....there are "buttes" all over the place! The largest one is comically named "Table Mountain"! So we do indeed also call them table top mountains and they are not all as steep and narrow as the pictures Laurence used as examples.
Love Laurence and his channel. It's always cool to see other Brits react to his videos.
I agree.Lost In The Pond is a good teaching tool for other British reactions.
Love this, it was very interesting.
Jaywalking is when you cross the street in the middle between cars and not at a cross walk or light!
And if you’ve ever been to the UK particularly London you will know jaywalking should be illegal. Pedestrians routinely cross in front of traffic and it’s not illegal. And it should be it’s so dangerous.
Yes. Some people think it's a petty traffic violation when it has serious consequences. The road belongs to drivers. You can't just use it like a sidewalk and act like you own it Jaywalkers can cause accidents and also interrupt the flow of traffic
I really enjoyed this one. He gives a good perspective from the British point of view, especially after living in the states for so long. Great reaction guys. - Hawk
I hope this helps: Grits is indeed a porridge, because of how it is prepared. However, Grits may be of a bit thicker consistency than most Brits are accustomed to on their porridges Americans don't just drown anything in a gallon of water and call it a meal.) Exaggerating quantity of liquids intended for emphasis.. Note also that Grits are made from Corn, not oat or wheat, so they taste completely foreign to most British palates Also, if you ever do get Grits in the USA, do me a personal favor, use a dab of butter and salt and pepper in them. Don't eat them with milk and sugar, you aren't a child!!!!!!
Hushpuppies and elephant ears... Yuuummmmmmmmmmm!
Fried dough, think pancake batter boy poured into hot oil and lifted out then sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Grits , ground up corn meal simmered in milk that soaks into the meal then add butter on top and mix in.
Grits is made from corn meal. You can get them plain or add other ingredients such as cheese and/or shrimp.
You don’t actually eat them plain. They have virtually no flavor of their own.
Elephant ear is also known as a funnel cake. Deep fried pancake usually pancake batter covered in powdered sugar. It's a carnival staple
Elephant ears and funnel cakes are not the same thing, one uses pancake batter and the other one uses thinned out bread dough
I wish he had mentioned the origins of hushpuppies, the food. It's not pleasant, but it is interesting and an important part of American history.
“Fried bread” is a Native American Indian bread.
Hushpuppy is a shoe here in Canada too.
😂😅
I doubt this will surprise you two but when it comes to me no worries when it comes to the colorful words department.
I happen to be fluent in swear words vernacular.
I've even picked a few British versions since following the channel. 😂😁😂
I have tried grits and no thanks.
To be fair it was here in Yankee territory so the southern version may be different. 😊
Hush puppies are quite good.
Although thanks BP2 I never thought of them as looking like what puppies eventually lose.
Now that's the first thing I'm going to think of the next time I see them.😅😂
Deep-fried Mars bars, snickers, and baked goods, etc are common here with fair food.
Don't forget fried twinkies!
I'm pretty sure Lawrence will bring up Aluminum at some point We also have Crab Rangoon
Hushpuppies are awesome! They sprinkle powdered sugar on them. They also put powdered sugar on elephant ears... Or as we like to call them in the south, funnel cakes. I looked up pics of them in Google pics but they got all fancy on most of them. They are good and they're not as dense as a donut. They're light.
@@Kari5274 in the northern it's funnel cakes too.
Hushpuppies are not the same as funnelcakes. Hushpuppies are made of cornmeal with diced onion, deep fried and usually served with fish. I have never seen them with powdered sugar.
Grits are good. With butter and brown sugar
Coming from the northeast ( Boston), I didn't know what a hushpuppy was either...lol.
I'm from the Midwest (northwest IL to be more specific), and we call elephant ears funnel cakes.
Are Brits familiar with "gulch" or "sidewinder"?
Errrr no.... explain please lol
@@BritPopsReact A gulch is a deep V-shaped valley formed by erosion. It may contain a small stream or dry creek bed and is usually larger in size than a gully. Sudden intense rainfall upstream may produce flash floods in the bed of the gulch. In eastern Canada, gulch refers to a narrow deep cove (Newfoundland).
There are many named gulches in the West and Southwest USA, e.g., Gower Gulch in Death Valley CA and Coyote Gulch in Utah.
@@BritPopsReact Crotalus cerastes, known as the sidewinder, horned rattlesnake or sidewinder rattlesnake, is a pit viper species belonging to the genus Crotalus (the rattlesnakes), and is found in the desert regions of the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Like all other pit vipers, it is venomous. The common name sidewinder alludes to its unusual form of locomotion, which is thought to give it traction on windblown desert sand. As its body progresses over loose sand, it forms a letter J-shaped impression, with the tip of the hook pointing in the direction of travel.
What is powdered sugar? Do you mean icing sugar?
I think thats what he meant :)
