    The cassettes were not things he could go out and buy on digital. They were either tapes he made, or of live music taped at a show, stuff that would be very hard to replace.
    The hat was a personal momento.
    The leather jacket was a personal momento.
    The motorcycle stuff was just a small box of personal momentos.
    What was the woman sacrificing?
    What was the woman attached to?
    What did the woman care about other than have a soulless clean apartment?
    So the husband should give up all the things he was attached to for a woman who only cares about herself and what she wants right now?

    • @ChrisM-qo1jc

    If I can't afford to buy something (like a beautiful handknit sweater while on a trip), I take photos of it. If I must get rid of something from my past, I now try to remember to take photos of it. They take up less space and still I get to keep the memory. I gave away a violet button down gauze-type shirt one time and still regret it after 20 years. I wore it in art class & didn't realize the memories it held. Also my Grandmother's dress form which I didn't realize I couldn't buy a new one with a heavy metal base like it had. I admire the Skip Girl for being able to repair things.

    I once helped an old lady who wanted her garage to be organized. I wouldn't throw stuff away unless it was truly useless, but a lot of stuff can be donated.
    She had so much stuff, mostly wanted to hold onto it because she might "use it someday". But there were lots of useful things that would be more useful to someone else who'd actually use it. There was an old microwave in there that my roommates ended up using for years. Lots of tools that hadn't been used in ages.
    There were some sentimental items as well. Not like family photos or anything, that stuff should be held on to. But a couple instruments that hadn't been played in years, maybe even decades. And some old tapes, a stereo, and some speakers.
    I guarantee that anything that you have that you haven't touched or looked at in years, can probably be appreciated by someone else. You may have good memories associated with them, but those memories are yours and will never go away, no matter what happens to the items anyways. It's good to let someone else have a chance to make some memories too. And it makes space in your own life to make more new memories with new things in your life.
    You don't have to move on. But maybe your stuff should move on to someone else.

What an evil-heartless-Oprah book reader, that woman. Love the squatting chick. Lives her life with the wild in her heart. Revived his own heart by his trash. So beautiful. The box of tapes really, really set me off. lol I think it was the way she regarded these things, with annoyance, no consideration of the meaning of those tapes. Part of a bigger story of how to crush a man.

  • @owlopal3378
    @owlopal3378 3 роки тому +2

    The man. It was never about things for him. That is why he doesn't complain much when she is tossing his stuff. The things were just indicators of his past, ties to memories, which trigger him (along with the impetus provided by Skip Girl) to remember who he is and who he wants to be. When he leaves, he does not have much stuff with him.
    The woman. For her it was about not being able to have a child. She couldn't control this (perhaps unless she left him), so she turned to another aspect of her life that she feels she CAN control: things. Well...HIS things. In this instance, the elimination thereof. However, it is only an illusion of control. The act of eliminating things, was in fact controlling her.
    Psychologically, she really wanted to throw HIM away, because she blamed him (his "lazy swimmers") for her unhappiness.

    (It is the abandonment of our illusion of control that ultimately frees us.)
    Also, this movie was about REUSING. REUSE=GOOD.

I have one large storage bin that I put old clothing or objects that are nostalgic to me, and one shoe box to put cards, letters, pictures, and things like playwrights and sheet music in. I also have a box for costume stuff that I've made in the past and a portfolio to hold onto art that I've made in the past. All things that I put my heart into and I won't let go. I try not to get super attached to most things though. A fire could destroy everything and I want to have my attachment to the beings that I love, my cat and my boyfriend, rather than stuff that will one day be gone without me someday. I would never force my boyfriend to get rid of things he cared about though unless he has a hoarding problem and is holding onto literal trash.

    • @jorislemoine1488
      @jorislemoine1488 4 роки тому +5

      I wouldn't say he was a hoarder or that she was necessarily someone who threw away everything (of someone else). It was clear that she was mostly throwing away stuff that had emotional value for him, and all of it symbolic: the broken guitar as a way to showcase his failed music career; the hat as a reminder of younger days and being cool; reminders of activities he had done.
      It was obvious that she was unburdening him of emotional baggage, and it was clear that - for her - he too was emotional baggage, and the logical conclusion of the piece was their separation.
      All of these symbolic touches - it is a very clever short film - don't have to signify any big statements on hoarders vs. cleaners, but there is definitely something to be said of people who cling to objects either for reasons of feeling secure or because they have an emotional connection with those objects.
      On the other hand, someone who throws everything away could be interpreted as more socially or emotionally distant, but in many cultures asceticism and self-enforced poverty are philosophical and mental practices to sharpen the mind.
      The wife definitely knew how she wanted to clean up her own life, as a way to take stock for the next phase. After all, there were some allusions to his infertility. So, she wanted children, and failing that, she wanted to live life without the expectation of that future, nor on a life focused on the past - their relationship.

    There are a lot of people crapping on this woman who wants to live in a clean house. Sounds like she gave him 2 years to do it himself. Also, instead of having an adult conversion with his wife about it, he childishly builds resentment and runs off to lust after the fantasy of some other girl. The time he spent with Skip Girl would have been better suited not making his wife clean his hoarding problem by herself. Seems like she's better off without some man-child feeling sorry for himself.
